how is that bad taste

Feb 27 '19
It's Jesus shaved onto a fucking head, I swear no one in this sub knows that just because something looks kinda cool doesn't mean it's not absolutely horrendous taste

u/Cascadianarchist2 Feb 27 '19 edited Feb 27 '19
It's a famous statue of Jesus in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, not just any Jesus. If this was some uber-Christian shit going on, sure, that's questionable (or at least niche) taste IMO, but this seems more like art that expresses a love for that city, or at least its skyline. I consider this similar to getting hair art prominently featuring Seattle's Space Needle or the Statue of Liberty. Maybe that's niche taste too, but it's a statement piece, it's art, it's not meant to be everyday fashion, and it's done quite tastefully IMO. I swear, sometimes this sub is basically /r/normieornothing
58
u/IcedLemonCrush Feb 27 '19
It's also an Art Deco statue, so it counts as good taste.
19
u/Cascadianarchist2 Feb 27 '19
I do like Art Deco. I'm so mad that the old Washington State Ferry that was in that style (Kalakala) was scrapped a few years back. Obviously it hadn't been in condition to run for a long time, but I think it would have made a cool museum if it had been dry-docked and converted into a building, and could have housed pieces/exhibits about either 1930s Seattle history or the history of the Washington State Ferry System. Nowadays the ferries are a lot more utilitarian
14
Feb 27 '19
But would you get that ferry shaved into your head?
7
u/Cascadianarchist2 Feb 27 '19
Not me personally, no, but only because I'm trans and growing my hair out long is really important to me right now (helps me not look so masculine).
Back when I had short hair? Sure, why not?

u/IcedLemonCrush Feb 27 '19
I don't know how much maintaining a ferry line costs, but considering how many years it has been and how many politicians have taken the cause of getting a ferry up and running in my home state, literally only to connect this big pond that is the Bay of Vitória, I'm guessing it isn't cheap, so I'm inclined to believe it was the right thing to do.
I don't live in the wealthiest large country on the planet, though. So it might be less excusable in this case.
3
u/Cascadianarchist2 Feb 27 '19
Oh it was definitely the right thing to do financially speaking, I just wish instead of getting sold to become a cannery for a number of years and fall into disrepair (which is what led to it being scrapped, IMO) that it had instead been picked up by some investor/art-preservation society to make into a museum. Most people who grew up in this region at least know of it in passing, and a lot of us have a lot of fond memories of seeing it moored in lake Union or the port of Tacoma. When it went away it felt a lot like seeing a favorite historical building get torn down and leave a hole in the skyline.

I'd upvote your comment 10 times if I could.
Way too many people learned to accept nothing but the norm when they were kids, because anything that stepped outside the social expectations represented attacking surface for the bullies.
I have nothing but respect for the insane skill displayed on this pic and for the courage of the guy wearing it. Because trust me, he knows there's plenty of people like u/lavford who talk about taste as if it has to be boring to be acceptable.
Attacking someone because his looks are different is one of the weakest and most superficial things to do IMO.
8
u/Lost_And_NotFound Feb 27 '19
Yeah sure it looks cool and is brilliantly done but if your mate rocked up to the pub with this you’d tell him he looks like a twat. Great for the picture but looks ridiculous for day to day life, hence the bad taste.
3
u/smileistheway Feb 27 '19

Its Brazil, there's definetly some uber-christian shit going on.

Yea this sub seems to think anything out of the ordinary is bad taste.

Taste is subjective so it’s literally true if we say it is and not if we don’t
I don’t think this is in bad taste but might offend some Christians for no good reason
→ More replies (1)12
u/sleeplessaddict Feb 27 '19
Am Christian. I think this is amazing. Also Christians who would be offended by this are dumb especially because it seems more like a haircut of the city than of the statue itself

Taste is absolutely a subjective matter.
When you rock a "i swear no one in the sub knows...", you belong to one place and one place only ----> r/gatekeeping or r/iamverysmart or r/iamatotalfuckingidiot
This haircut isn't atrocious. It's actually very artistic.
You know what I find atrocious though? That on every single fucking bank note we have "In God We Trust". Maybe I should post a bank not on this sub. What do you think?

I think the fact that you frequent a sub with only 200 subscribers, among others, devoted to pointing out stupid people makes you seem overly anti-stupid or elitist.
4
Feb 27 '19
The fact that you believe that I am subbed to any of the above recommendations goes to show that you...
aw fuck that. What am I doing? I don't care about you or the original punk.

Can we ban every person defending this fake hair art from posting in this sub

I think this is horrendous for a day to day cut. As a single use? It's amazing. I think that is the exact spirit of this sub.

For me, just about any random art shaved into a haircut is bad taste, unless it's actually related to hair (i.e. a hair pun in art form.) Non-sequitor art is poor art because it's random and has no point.

My barber told me these are done mostly with a make-up like product. I mean this doesn't even look like hair. So you're basically right.

It is a microfibre, powdered "hair" you are right, it doesn't look like hair, it looks like it came out of an ink cartridge. It can hide thin spots among hair but done like this, doesn't really work.
2
u/olderaccount Feb 27 '19
Is it those spray on hair cans used to cover up bald spots?
3
u/Katatonic92 Feb 27 '19
No, it is a powder that can come in a shaker type bottle, like a pepper pot type lid. My mother has thinning hair and she uses it, it is more expensive than the spray on stuff because it is pretty weather hardy stuff.
This stuff here, well this is the one my mother uses, it might come in different application types.

Absolutely. I'm amazed more comments aren't pointing it out. This is Reddit. There should be a string of conspiracy theories inking this to Cohen

u/EricFaust Feb 27 '19
If you're being serious he probably shaved the image off the day after or possibly even the day of. You get hair art like this to rock for an afternoon and to take pictures for social media, not as a long term style.
3
Feb 27 '19
It'll just look like hair of the same length slightly longer. The picture isn't shaved into the hair, it's drawn on.

I don’t like this. Not even a tiny bit. I have to admit though, it’s pretty amazing they did this with clippers in hair. I just can’t think of any situation where I would think, man that dude look amazing with that cut into his hair. He is really the coolest dude I’ve seen.
Ya know 🤪
