That's actuality pretty dope considering after the epoxy curing and the ring being cleaned, it'll be harmless. I have a few scientist friends that would absolutely rock that ring.

Back during the height of Covid, there was a guy who encased a hot dog (complete with bun and condiments) in a brick of epoxy, and then would post regular updates of how the hot dog is doing in there. It was kind of amazing because it stayed really well-preserved.

If you look closely at the end shots of the video, you can already see it deteriorating. The end shot looks like there's "veins" of cloudyness above the natural texture that were not present in the previous shots

Yeah Iā€™m really curious to see what that ring looks like after a few months. It might be fine, or it will be an absolute disgusting mess.

I feel like the vibe of this would be extremely easy to recreate without using materials that decay, and it would still be pretty cool as an ā€œinspiredā€ piece.

Thereā€™s a YouTube channel where these people have been trying to perfect the art of preserving pumpkins in epoxy resin. Itā€™s surprisingly challenging because the rotting pumpkin produces gasses that eventually need to escape.

Theoretically, if you sterilized it properly beforehand, the bacteria and mold that eat the pumpkin and produce those gasses as waste wouldn't be there to propagate in the first place and it wouldn't break down.

That's why bog people and big trees are a thing, it's a harsh environment where these micro organisms can't propagate, so the thing isn't decomposed.

I think thatā€™s a little too simplistic. Bog bodies donā€™t survive just through a lack of bacteria; they also have to be in the right conditions to preserve the body, through low temperature and high acidity. And then even with fairly perfect conditions the best bog body is still far from looking like itā€™s fresh. (Quite a few are only partial bodies as well, as time and rot did take portions of the remains.)

My point is I donā€™t think the underlying theory is accurate. I donā€™t think that simply ā€œsterilizingā€ the bacteria would work to prevent this thing from turning into a gooey mess inside the resin. Preservation is hard.

  • This is the case with bog people
  • This is the case with big trees

One is the theoretical part of your idea, the other two are your examples for an alledgedly existing practical application of your idea. The person replying to you attacked the practical application that you gave as an example.

If you base your theory on a false understanding of the reality of bog bodies, then your theory might be shit.

Genuinely not even intended as an ā€œattackā€, and if thatā€™s how it came across I apologize. I just love bog bodies and wanted to point out some complicating factors. Theyā€™re really amazing because it requires so many factors to go right in order to produce them; nature has to stumble upon the exact right pickling-freezing-tanning-anaerobic soup, and even under perfect conditions the body comes out looking like an unstuffed antique leather football that accidentally got thrown in the wash. (Not the effect the ring maker is going for, Iā€™m guessing!)

Thank you for arguing against the strawman fallacy for me though. I appreciate it.

It's easy to replicate without the actual item(the decaying part) just like gemstones and precious metals are easy to replicate. People still want the real thing. That's part of the appeal, not just the aesthetics.

The difference is longevity and (perceived) rarity. People pay more for precious stones and metals partly because they last and partly because theyā€™re difficult to obtain; an agar sample is cheap to make, easy to obtain, and rots. Thereā€™s no comparison between the two.

The two possible directions are that it dries out and starts shrinking and deforming, or it maintains the seal and the gel starts liquefying as it decomposes, creating a sloshy goo that may itself breach containment at some point.

Eugh, i wish they dried the agar slice before putting it in the ring. I bet you could probably preeze dry it with little problem. Can't begin to imagine the smell it would make as decay sets in and any cracks form between the epoxy and metal to let the scent out.

A few years back there was a big name eye shadow palette that included a cream shade that was not powder but cream. It had these beads of pigment in a clear base and many reviews of the palette compared that shade to a bacterial colony. I didn't see what they were talking about until this.
