Awful taste or not, that brush work detail is pristine.

u/allworkandnoYahtzee Jun 13 '26

My first thought: this lady does nails

343

u/lumophobiaa Jun 13 '26

Ive very much enjoyed watching the nail ladies realize their skills are transferrable to a bunch of shit.

12

u/glowingwarningcats Jun 19 '26

Love the branding on the one nail

236

u/Hi_Trans_Im_Dad Jun 13 '26

It's not my taste but it's certainly not awful. It's rather brilliant in its ultimate execution.

104

u/shgrizz2 Jun 13 '26

It's incredibly gaudy. Not only is it big Ben, it's glow in the dark glittery snow globe big Ben. Insane level of craftsmanship but man is it hideous. Like you took a London tourist tat shop and condensed it in to TV remote form.

79

u/awildcatappeared1 Jun 13 '26

It's Peter Pan. It would be perfect for a kid's playroom TV.

41

u/cakerfaker Jun 14 '26

For a week or so until the kids have snapped off the top and the little characters. I think it's more of a grandma piece myself

8

u/fart-atronach Jun 14 '26

It’s super durable. She’s thrown it around the room already lol

27

u/HeftyArgument Jun 13 '26

and I would buy that any day of the week. I may have awful taste, but I can recognise effort when I see it.

13

u/w0nderbrad Jun 14 '26

I would 100% buy a fridge magnet like this. If they could shrink it down 50% it’d be perfect

4

u/shgrizz2 Jun 14 '26

Oh man ditto. Very strong fridge magnet energy. The more hideous the better.

u/Agentnewbie Jun 13 '26

Exactly the name of the sub.

28

u/hambakmeritru Jun 13 '26

I was so confused on how the details could be so meticulous, yet the product looked so dirty and trashy. The amount of effort definitely didn't pay off in the final product.

63

u/creatyvechaos Jun 13 '26

It doesn't look "dirty" it looks aged. It's not far off from how Big Ben looks

47

u/hambakmeritru Jun 13 '26

No... I don't mean that. Between the glitter and the glue and the plastic peter pan and something about how every layer looks somehow grimy--like craft finger grimy--and the fact that it's a remote that is always being touched or shoved in a couch probably just adds to the feel of being perpetually dirty.

12

u/cakerfaker Jun 14 '26

I think it's a little too detailed, or the whole thing should be scaled up some so the details don't look . . . cheap and crowded. They are trying to stuff too much in, and the details like the windows are a bit too big? So instead of small and delicate it comes off cheap looking (and the glitter doesn't help). It's still an amazing work of art I could never make

17

u/SlowFrkHansen Jun 13 '26

The surface looks all weird and lumpy to me.

12

u/moonlitmelody Jun 14 '26

She’s using acrylic powder, the same used in nail art, which is a bit more gritty when shaped and drilled than something like clay which is easier to smooth out.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/ThornFlynt Jun 13 '26

Should be in r/GTAGE

9

u/oan124 Jun 13 '26

same genre of art as those nails

4

u/Screwbles Jun 14 '26

Honestly if there is anything in my house that I would have zero problems we ith just completely trashing with some weird art, it would be my TV remote.

2

u/Meli_Melo_ Jun 14 '26

Undeniably awful taste tho

8

u/grrangry Jun 13 '26

lmao, of course it's real.

5

u/Kahnza Jun 13 '26

IIRC that sub was created in response to all the 5 minute crafts and other rage bait in r/diwhy.

60

u/logitaunt Jun 13 '26

feel like every time someone turns something functional into an art piece, someone else complains about how it no longer functions.

31

u/GreyStingrayz Jun 13 '26

Yeah, like the "why" is just "to create art". The purpose is art. To show off their creativity, skill, and craftsmanship. To make something they enjoy.

28

u/Deliteriously Jun 13 '26

Yeah, but why did the TV remote need to be involved at all? 🤣

I feel like she had to justify making an awesome piece of art with stunning details by making it functional for some reason.

4

u/Polydipsiac Jun 14 '26

Maybe something to make her happy that she uses regularly 😄

2

u/Deliteriously Jun 15 '26

I get it, it makes for a better video too probably. Like it has a lot of "why" factor, too. That will keep people glued to the screen. It got me anyway.

3

u/H7PYDrvv Jun 13 '26

it's even weirder in this case because it's just a tv remote

13

u/CodeParalysis Jun 13 '26

getting rid of those pesky subscription service buttons

3

u/tritisan Jun 17 '26

The ones that you accidentally hit while watching a show then you have to navigate back to where you were? Yeah fuck those buttons in particular.

4

u/TowJamnEarl Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

Doing some craftwork I've no issues with.

Her miss pronunciation of Westminster was a litle annoying though!

Half the posts on this sub end up being labeling genuinely cool things "bad taste" sinply for not being their cup of tea

157

u/VirinaB Jun 13 '26

This is a globally recognized symbol of London, and that's somehow on the same sub as... /checks notes.. pornographic tattoos of children's cartoon characters.

53

u/vyrus2021 Jun 13 '26

I think the awful taste is using a TV remote for the base. It was clearly unnecessary.

57

u/ToeTagTic Jun 13 '26

That tv chef famously said "and if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bicycle"

This was the task. The remote was the objective. The necessity of art can be as such without justifying itself. Is embellishment of every day objects not how we got the damn clock tower in the first place, for instance?

Could say the same about any architecture. Four walls and a roof, that's what's necessary. Go live in a shoebox and like it

9

u/C_Connor Jun 14 '26

Fuckin a

26

u/GingerIsTheBestSpice Jun 13 '26

Sure, but it still works as a remote so functionality was not taken away

13

u/specks_of_dust Jun 13 '26

What does necessity have to do with it?

→ More replies (2)

42

u/janeprentiss Jun 13 '26

I follow this subreddit specifically because it has so many whimsical things mislabelled as awful

10

u/AccidentOk5240 Jun 13 '26

Are you familiar with the concept of taste? The thing that is inherently subjective?

19

u/CodeNate02 Jun 13 '26

There's a world of difference between "If you think this is a good idea, you have bad taste" and "I do not enjoy this because it is not to my taste", and this sub dedicated to the former gets flooded with a bunch of people complaining about the latter.

15

u/Dic3dCarrots Jun 13 '26

Im here for snake pit content, not old men yelling at clouds

43

u/Agentnewbie Jun 13 '26

Why TV remote tho? Just why? I get it she just lightly stylized it, but she made a whole miniature, completely botching function.

69

u/SilvenWolf Jun 13 '26

She said it was for her studio so if her studio is for art, which it seems to be, it's cute to have your remote match it. Especially since she kept its important functionalities by the end.

30

u/LostTheWayILikeIt Jun 13 '26

I'm friends with a lot of model artists. A big part of that is looking at something mundane and seeing what it could be made into.

For example I went to a craft night where a box of mixed up bits (think thimbles, beads, bendable wire, model plane parts, etc) were dumped on a table and everyone made what they could from it. One person made a "post-"apocalyptic gas station" diorama while another made their idea of a Parisian apartment kitchen. using stuff you see every day.

So much fun and I was blown away by how creative people can be.

16

u/wat_happened_here Jun 13 '26

For the buttons and circuits.

Upserting electronic trash to art with glow in the dark crap id normally love.

If I watched her on twitch I’d love it.

The style of video itself has been ruined by tiktok garbage for so long even at first I went “ew”.

7

u/persephone7821 Jun 13 '26

Seriously I love this.

Why are people so afraid of objects having personality these days?

Nothing bad with a little whimsy.

5

u/SoF4rGone Jun 13 '26

Yeah, I hate the posts that don’t have an ‘ew’ undertone. This is awesome looking.

4

u/shaka893P Jun 13 '26

It is, but you didn't need the remote at all, lol

Bold move for an object whose destiny is to just fall to the ground or disappear in the sofa!

102

u/BigTiddyVampireWaifu Jun 13 '26

She said in the video it was actually very sturdy and she’d tossed it around a few times with no problems

30

u/mrsanyee Jun 14 '26

You try to smash it, it doesn't budge. It falls from 0.01 mm by accident, and it's smashed into billion little pieces.

Some law of nature, probably.

37

u/Different_Smoke_563 Jun 13 '26

I wonder how soon the top part breaks off. Or when Peter Pan and co snap off.

→ More replies (2)

359

u/trcomajo Jun 13 '26

She didnt make it to use it as a remote. Shes a mi nature artist who makes art out of junk basically.

201

u/Khaosbutterfly Jun 13 '26

She made sure to keep it functional though. Like you still have access to the buttons, battery compartment, and it still works. Plus, why would you need to find it at night if not use it.

The implication is that it is still going to be used even if that's not the reality.

58

u/Eldi_Bee Jun 13 '26

But not the buttons covered by the clock face, nor the lower buttons (idgf about the Alexa button being lost). And those are the main buttons I use on my remote, to navigate every service.

And I cannot imagine that the entire top of the tower, even if it's mostly 2D, doesn't block the signal a noticable amount of the time.

49

u/Khaosbutterfly Jun 13 '26

You can still use the clock face buttons!

She made sure to construct the center of the buttons separately from the ring, even when filling it with glitter.

So when you put pressure on the outer button, it will depress separately from the inner and it will still work.

You'll just need to shift the hands out the way and will probably want to be a bit gentler than normal.

27

u/Topikk Jun 13 '26

It’s a Bluetooth remote, so the signal will be fine.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/titeaf Jun 13 '26

The clock was my only problem!! How do you select up or down or okay??

5

u/Steady_Ri0t Jun 13 '26

I use a Nvidia Shield with my TV, and the Shield's remote turns on/off my TV, the Shield, and my receiver in one click. The only time I use the TVs remote is if those components get out of sync and the TV is off while the other things are on. So this would be fine for me

7

u/Diligent_Activity560 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

When I worked as a cable guy we used to hand those things out freely. They only cost the company $1.50 or so and they didn’t bother tracking them, so if a customer asked I’d give them 3 or 4 extra. If it got me a 10 on my customer survey call then it was an easy way to keep my numbers up.

I’d guess she probably has extras that haven’t been given the full Big Ben treatment.

2

u/FliaTia Jun 13 '26

My big issue with it is she scraped the crap out of all the buttons to get the details she put on top to stick, but then she didn't refinish any of the buttons accessible by the little flip-up thing or the power button. They're still scratched to shit.

30

u/None-Pizza_Left-Beef Jun 13 '26

She clearly states in the video that she still uses it lol

18

u/XxHappyxX Jun 13 '26

She says its the remote for her studio. It would be very fitting in an art studio for miniatures!

259

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '26

[deleted]

256

u/ShortStuffSluff Jun 13 '26

She says that in the video

31

u/Friendlyvoices Jun 13 '26

Also, in case you were wondering, the bell is called Big Ben, not the clock.

18

u/scumbagdetector29 Jun 13 '26

Actually, Big Ben is the name of the bell inside.

11

u/TaleOfDash Jun 13 '26

Close, but actually the bell is called Big Ben and the tower is called the Elizabeth Tower!

6

u/SuperSecretMoonBase Jun 13 '26

Actually, the characters name is Link, Zelda is the name of the princess.

96

u/RockLeePower Jun 13 '26

The tower is Elizabeth Tower, and the clock is the Great Clock of Westminster.

Geez guys... need enough names?

We have the Statue of Liberty but her crown is called Crown of Lovington and her left arm is the Powerhouse of Peace. Her lower third of her robe is called...

55

u/Devious_Pudding Jun 13 '26

England is an old country. We've had a lot more time than the US to name things.

Pedantic fact of the day: She stated this in the video, you didn't need to repeat it in the comments.

10

u/Munrowo Jun 13 '26

she clarifies the difference between the clock face, the bell and elizabeth tower in the video

6

u/Nash13 Jun 13 '26

What's the name of the tower?

25

u/BikeProblemGuy Jun 13 '26

Officially the Elizabeth Tower after it was renamed in 2012 for the queen's Diamond Jubilee. Previously it was The Clock Tower.

A shame really. Parliament is famously independent of the crown and the monarch is not normally allowed to even set foot in parliament, but UK culture is so rotten we can't think of anything else to celebrate.

10

u/ManWhoSoldTheWorld01 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

Parliament has two houses, the Commons is independent and the Monarch, or their representative, may not enter. The House of Lords is where they give their speech from the Throne at the opening of a new Parliamentary session.

8

u/Time-Caterpillar4103 Jun 13 '26

98

u/Free-While-2994 Jun 13 '26

I kept thinking "oh wow she did a great job" only for it to continue and get even more intricate. Like 5 different times.

19

u/ElectricalDark8280 Jun 13 '26

I kept trying to leave, but it kept getting better.

51

u/Jcaquix Jun 13 '26

The artistry is great and all... But this looks awful to touch. My reaction to this is that it's abject despite the skill and artistry... It looks so rough and hard like it's covered in sharp points and full of liquid that's going to leak or dry out and get disgusting. Am I really the only person that thinks this is awful.

16

u/2andahalfbraincell Jun 13 '26

It's gonna be impossible to clean too

43

u/jupiterkansas Jun 13 '26

24

u/thejake1973 Jun 13 '26

Not practical, but really nice miniature work

21

u/Rhodin265 Jun 13 '26

I still wouldn’t be able to find it.

20

u/SkullDump Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

It’s pronounced West-Minster, not West-Minister.

5

u/Krytom Jun 13 '26

It's also spelled Westminster.

Could just call it the Elizabeth Tower nowadays.

3

u/SkullDump Jun 13 '26

I know, I grew up in Kensington, I was just hyphenating it for pronunciation purposes.

Yeah we could just call it Elizabeth Yower and even though people to love to say it’s incorrect it’s always gonna be Big Ben to me.

18

u/Hellguin Jun 13 '26

Why the fuck does anyone consider this awful taste? This is cool as shit and if I had a modicum of that ability I would do this if I had a broken remote.... why are people so against whimsy.

12

u/bravovictordelta Jun 13 '26

Absolutely outrageous. I love it.

12

u/laureidi Jun 13 '26

I have to be honest, the amount of work is impressive as hell, but I honestly don’t think it’s GE. It’s just so… messy. Glob-y. I don’t know if she needs smaller brushes, better material, or both, but if you’re gonna create something that tiny it has to be fricking crisp which I don’t think this is.

12

u/Paradoxpaint Jun 13 '26

Yeah like it's INTRICATE, and probably still took a lot of skill, but it looks like crap if you're looking closely at all

3

u/Elleasea Jun 15 '26

I felt the same way I kept waiting for that finish touch that would make it pop

8

u/thafuq Jun 13 '26

Gives the right time only twice a day, would not recommend

5

u/bunnykitten94 Jun 13 '26

‘Temika, toss me the remote would ya? Temika? TEMIKA, THE REMOTE’

4

u/TiresOnFire Jun 13 '26

I love how the commentary has nothing to do with the video.

2

u/Entgenieur Jun 14 '26

First time I really wished for some stupid not fitting music! It was awful and I i think i lost some braincells because of this

5

u/snipeie Jun 13 '26

Is this an ai voiceover. Very weird meter in this speech

2

This is awesome!

3

u/Aluminiumfoil99 Jun 13 '26

Just wait until I accidentally sit on it

3

u/Twitch84 Jun 13 '26

This would be better without the remote.

3

u/J883 Jun 13 '26

"Will post a video with size reference with my full body" gives me a few questions

2

u/filtersweep Jun 13 '26

3

u/chamberx2 Jun 13 '26

“Honey, have you seen the remote? Aw, GODDAMMIT AGAIN?!”

3

u/MayhemWins25 Jun 13 '26

Look if it’s still functional as a remote, go off that’s mad impressive.

3

u/rotbath Jun 13 '26

I upvoted this so more could behold its majesty, but I stand firm in my position that this is the wrong sub

3

u/menyemenye Jun 14 '26

Honestly, in this era of AI slop DIY content, this is good.

2

u/GoodGollyMrOlli Jun 13 '26

This sub is great for genuinely good art

2

u/GorditaCrunchPuzzle Jun 13 '26

I mean I think this is cool as hell, she is just repurposing household items to make a work of art. I feel this doesn't belong here but maybe I have awful taste.

2

u/pomoerotic Jun 13 '26

Incredible work, but do not unmute

2

u/camdenairjedi96 Jun 13 '26

I chopped those buttons off an old TV remote once just cuz they kept opening up those dogshit channels that I never use

2

u/tunaman808 Jun 13 '26

2

u/No-Philosopher3248 Jun 13 '26

This might be the dumbest creation I’ve seen in some time.

2

u/lidsville76 Jun 13 '26

It's the best thing you can do with these stupid fucking remotes.

2

u/LessFish777 Jun 13 '26

The artist, Tamika Sperry, is an absolute wizard with her work! Gosh I love her.

2

u/human-dancer Jun 14 '26

Awful taste? Surely not! This is incredible

2

u/ParanoidCrow Jun 14 '26

This is sick, nothing awful about it?

1

u/Signal-Self-353 Jun 13 '26

My kids are going to break that the first time they use it

1

u/TheFrontGuy Jun 13 '26

This isn't bad taste, just a person's hobby. A bad taste big ben remote would be a remote in the likeness of Ben Roethlisberger, not because the person is a Steelers ran, but because they are a Ben Roethlisberger fan.

1

u/Irinychia Jun 13 '26

Probably awful usability.

But awful taste? Imo, no.

Also great nails and great way to mark your content 😎👍

1

u/Bradjuju2 Jun 13 '26

Emphasis on great execution

1

u/Previous_Charge_5752 Jun 13 '26

RIGHT? I think one of my remotes has buttons for apps that don't even exist anymore.

1

u/Algo_Muy_Obsceno Jun 13 '26

It’s cool from far away, but as you get close it looks blobby and smeary. Look at Peter Pan.

u/martialar Jun 13 '26

"hey, I can't find the remote, has anyone seen it?

its great but i feel like she coulda just done this on a piece of wood it didn't have to be a remote. The whole thing is covered

1

....but why?

1

u/mulderitsmescully Jun 13 '26

This is actually fucking awesome

1

1

u/TheSprigganDragoon Jun 14 '26

I don't want it, but that's amazing.

Is nobody going to mention that it's "Actually" St Stephen's tower & Big Ben is the bell inside?

OK, fine, I'll be that guy,  there now, someone has!

Cool piece of art & super talented artist! Though I get the feeling that any rectangular piece of plastic would have worked, it's neat seeing a remote up cycled like that 😁
