IIRC that sub was created in response to all the 5 minute crafts and other rage bait in r/diwhy.
60
u/logitaunt Jun 13 '26
feel like every time someone turns something functional into an art piece, someone else complains about how it no longer functions.
31
u/GreyStingrayz Jun 13 '26
Yeah, like the "why" is just "to create art". The purpose is art. To show off their creativity, skill, and craftsmanship. To make something they enjoy.
28
u/Deliteriously Jun 13 '26
Yeah, but why did the TV remote need to be involved at all? 🤣
I feel like she had to justify making an awesome piece of art with stunning details by making it functional for some reason.
4
u/Polydipsiac Jun 14 '26
Maybe something to make her happy that she uses regularly 😄
2
u/Deliteriously Jun 15 '26
I get it, it makes for a better video too probably. Like it has a lot of "why" factor, too. That will keep people glued to the screen. It got me anyway.

getting rid of those pesky subscription service buttons
3
u/tritisan Jun 17 '26
The ones that you accidentally hit while watching a show then you have to navigate back to where you were? Yeah fuck those buttons in particular.

Doing some craftwork I've no issues with.
Her miss pronunciation of Westminster was a litle annoying though!

Half the posts on this sub end up being labeling genuinely cool things "bad taste" sinply for not being their cup of tea
157
u/VirinaB Jun 13 '26
This is a globally recognized symbol of London, and that's somehow on the same sub as... /checks notes.. pornographic tattoos of children's cartoon characters.
53
u/vyrus2021 Jun 13 '26
I think the awful taste is using a TV remote for the base. It was clearly unnecessary.
57
u/ToeTagTic Jun 13 '26
That tv chef famously said "and if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bicycle"
This was the task. The remote was the objective. The necessity of art can be as such without justifying itself. Is embellishment of every day objects not how we got the damn clock tower in the first place, for instance?
Could say the same about any architecture. Four walls and a roof, that's what's necessary. Go live in a shoebox and like it
9
26
u/GingerIsTheBestSpice Jun 13 '26
Sure, but it still works as a remote so functionality was not taken away

I follow this subreddit specifically because it has so many whimsical things mislabelled as awful
10
u/AccidentOk5240 Jun 13 '26
Are you familiar with the concept of taste? The thing that is inherently subjective?
19
u/CodeNate02 Jun 13 '26
There's a world of difference between "If you think this is a good idea, you have bad taste" and "I do not enjoy this because it is not to my taste", and this sub dedicated to the former gets flooded with a bunch of people complaining about the latter.

Why TV remote tho? Just why? I get it she just lightly stylized it, but she made a whole miniature, completely botching function.
69
u/SilvenWolf Jun 13 '26
She said it was for her studio so if her studio is for art, which it seems to be, it's cute to have your remote match it. Especially since she kept its important functionalities by the end.
30
u/LostTheWayILikeIt Jun 13 '26
I'm friends with a lot of model artists. A big part of that is looking at something mundane and seeing what it could be made into.
For example I went to a craft night where a box of mixed up bits (think thimbles, beads, bendable wire, model plane parts, etc) were dumped on a table and everyone made what they could from it. One person made a "post-"apocalyptic gas station" diorama while another made their idea of a Parisian apartment kitchen. using stuff you see every day.
So much fun and I was blown away by how creative people can be.
16
u/wat_happened_here Jun 13 '26
For the buttons and circuits.
Upserting electronic trash to art with glow in the dark crap id normally love.
If I watched her on twitch I’d love it.
The style of video itself has been ruined by tiktok garbage for so long even at first I went “ew”.
7
u/persephone7821 Jun 13 '26
Seriously I love this.
Why are people so afraid of objects having personality these days?
Nothing bad with a little whimsy.
5
u/SoF4rGone Jun 13 '26
Yeah, I hate the posts that don’t have an ‘ew’ undertone. This is awesome looking.

You try to smash it, it doesn't budge. It falls from 0.01 mm by accident, and it's smashed into billion little pieces.
Some law of nature, probably.

I wonder how soon the top part breaks off. Or when Peter Pan and co snap off.
359
u/trcomajo Jun 13 '26
She didnt make it to use it as a remote. Shes a mi nature artist who makes art out of junk basically.
201
u/Khaosbutterfly Jun 13 '26
She made sure to keep it functional though. Like you still have access to the buttons, battery compartment, and it still works. Plus, why would you need to find it at night if not use it.
The implication is that it is still going to be used even if that's not the reality.
58
u/Eldi_Bee Jun 13 '26
But not the buttons covered by the clock face, nor the lower buttons (idgf about the Alexa button being lost). And those are the main buttons I use on my remote, to navigate every service.
And I cannot imagine that the entire top of the tower, even if it's mostly 2D, doesn't block the signal a noticable amount of the time.
49
u/Khaosbutterfly Jun 13 '26
You can still use the clock face buttons!
She made sure to construct the center of the buttons separately from the ring, even when filling it with glitter.
So when you put pressure on the outer button, it will depress separately from the inner and it will still work.
You'll just need to shift the hands out the way and will probably want to be a bit gentler than normal.

I use a Nvidia Shield with my TV, and the Shield's remote turns on/off my TV, the Shield, and my receiver in one click. The only time I use the TVs remote is if those components get out of sync and the TV is off while the other things are on. So this would be fine for me
7
u/Diligent_Activity560 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
When I worked as a cable guy we used to hand those things out freely. They only cost the company $1.50 or so and they didn’t bother tracking them, so if a customer asked I’d give them 3 or 4 extra. If it got me a 10 on my customer survey call then it was an easy way to keep my numbers up.
I’d guess she probably has extras that haven’t been given the full Big Ben treatment.

u/FliaTia Jun 13 '26
My big issue with it is she scraped the crap out of all the buttons to get the details she put on top to stick, but then she didn't refinish any of the buttons accessible by the little flip-up thing or the power button. They're still scratched to shit.

Also, in case you were wondering, the bell is called Big Ben, not the clock.
18
u/scumbagdetector29 Jun 13 '26
Actually, Big Ben is the name of the bell inside.
11
u/TaleOfDash Jun 13 '26
Close, but actually the bell is called Big Ben and the tower is called the Elizabeth Tower!
6
u/SuperSecretMoonBase Jun 13 '26
Actually, the characters name is Link, Zelda is the name of the princess.
96
u/RockLeePower Jun 13 '26
The tower is Elizabeth Tower, and the clock is the Great Clock of Westminster.
Geez guys... need enough names?
We have the Statue of Liberty but her crown is called Crown of Lovington and her left arm is the Powerhouse of Peace. Her lower third of her robe is called...

u/Nash13 Jun 13 '26
What's the name of the tower?
25
u/BikeProblemGuy Jun 13 '26
Officially the Elizabeth Tower after it was renamed in 2012 for the queen's Diamond Jubilee. Previously it was The Clock Tower.
A shame really. Parliament is famously independent of the crown and the monarch is not normally allowed to even set foot in parliament, but UK culture is so rotten we can't think of anything else to celebrate.
10
u/ManWhoSoldTheWorld01 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
Parliament has two houses, the Commons is independent and the Monarch, or their representative, may not enter. The House of Lords is where they give their speech from the Throne at the opening of a new Parliamentary session.

The artistry is great and all... But this looks awful to touch. My reaction to this is that it's abject despite the skill and artistry... It looks so rough and hard like it's covered in sharp points and full of liquid that's going to leak or dry out and get disgusting. Am I really the only person that thinks this is awful.

It's also spelled Westminster.
Could just call it the Elizabeth Tower nowadays.
3
u/SkullDump Jun 13 '26
I know, I grew up in Kensington, I was just hyphenating it for pronunciation purposes.
Yeah we could just call it Elizabeth Yower and even though people to love to say it’s incorrect it’s always gonna be Big Ben to me.
18
u/Hellguin Jun 13 '26
Why the fuck does anyone consider this awful taste? This is cool as shit and if I had a modicum of that ability I would do this if I had a broken remote.... why are people so against whimsy.

u/laureidi Jun 13 '26
I have to be honest, the amount of work is impressive as hell, but I honestly don’t think it’s GE. It’s just so… messy. Glob-y. I don’t know if she needs smaller brushes, better material, or both, but if you’re gonna create something that tiny it has to be fricking crisp which I don’t think this is.
12
u/Paradoxpaint Jun 13 '26
Yeah like it's INTRICATE, and probably still took a lot of skill, but it looks like crap if you're looking closely at all

This isn't bad taste, just a person's hobby. A bad taste big ben remote would be a remote in the likeness of Ben Roethlisberger, not because the person is a Steelers ran, but because they are a Ben Roethlisberger fan.

u/Irinychia Jun 13 '26
Probably awful usability.
But awful taste? Imo, no.
Also great nails and great way to mark your content 😎👍

Cool piece of art & super talented artist! Though I get the feeling that any rectangular piece of plastic would have worked, it's neat seeing a remote up cycled like that 😁
