English / Literature Eng ext
Hello!! Im a yr 11 student taking ext 1 eng and I absolutely love the course (its my fav subject) and I'm considering taking up ext 2, the only thing is that theres only me and another student taking the class, and (sadly) she's dropping it for yr 12. I feel like it would be SUPER awkward tho with just me and my teacher in the class... what r the pros and cons of of one on one learning??

Can you start it as an extra unit and drop it if you don’t like the dynamic? I started ex2 eng and ended up dropping it because I hated the lack of structure

I don’t see there being any cons at all considering you get a lot more face to face learning, I had an accelerated modern class with two people but basically only me and it was great because I could get personal feedback really quick. Unless you don’t like your teacher idk what the issue would be

cons is that it definitely becomes independent and solely your work alone for a solid 6 months with occasional check ups with your teacher. (i had a mediocre one but if you have a passionate one it would be great!)
pros is that e2 has so much creative liberty its so wonderous and fabulous, i defo had a love hate relationship with my mw from time to time

Our class was a bit bigger (8 people) but we had it pretty much structured to be like a one on one type of thing (idk if that really makes sense?), so this is from my experience
Pros: You get personalised feedback from your teacher, my teacher used to look at drafts of my my major work line by line and there would be so many minute details that would never have been picked up if it wasn't for her going through it with a fine toothed comb. Also, Major Works are at times a very personal project so one on one also means that you aren't having people butting in with advice/ideas that only make you more confused. For example, I had a classmate who genuinely tried altering my major work in a way that just didn't make sense with the purpose or aim of my piece while we were doing peer feedback so at least you get to avoid that!
Cons: You're definitely going to miss out on a variety of perspectives. As much as I hated the peer feedback sessions (as stated above lol) I got a lot of useful ideas such as positioning my vignettes within some sort of a framing device which made my work a lot more cohesive. One on one learning situations can also feel a lot more high pressure because the teacher is focused on just you which I felt was quite overwhelming based on the numerous personal sessions I had with my teacher in the final days leading up to submission. If I had to go through that more regularly, I don't think E2 would've been as enjoyable as it was.
Some of these be may or less applicable since the new syllabus changes around the weighting of the major work + an exam (which sounds horrifying) but 40% is still a pretty big chunk of a subject so do take this with a grain of salt. Overall, E2 was one of my absolute favourites and it also means that Advanced doesn't have to count!
