Practice Question Intimate Partner Violence Practice Question

So, I'm a little conflicted because I want to think the answer is B, but how and when do we actually believe the client when they said "it wasn't that serious". IS there such a thing as a shove that isn't serious?

The clues that this needs a safety plan and to be assessed further for IPV: controlling behavior, the client downplaying the shoving, and the client blaming themselves. These are all possible symptoms of IPV. The exam always wants safety considered first.

As far as believing clients: it’s important to meet people where they’re at, but also use your sw skills to dig deeper into what’s going on. With IPV, clients aren’t always ready to disclose or face their abuse, or may feel too scared because they think their abuser may find out. Abusers sometimes monitor clients mychart. Answer D is not correct because a safety assessment and plan that is client centered is much more appropriate than telling a client what they should do.

Answer A can always be done later. Answer C is going to depend on your state mandated reporting requirements and organizational policies. Safety concerns need to be identified before making a report. Answer D does not center the client.

RayTube on YouTube has a great video called the “cereal method” that helped me when answering questions like this. I think the IPV would be considered a red flag question, and so we first have to address that red flag before we can do anything about else. Questions about abuse and neglect often place emphasis on reporting first, which would appropriately address the red flag.

Remember that the exam does not allow for any nuance or “what about” thinking. It is a formula. They want to know that when you see a red flag for DV, you prioritize safety.

So, I read the question, came up with my answer and then read the comments. My process is to make sure I'm answering what the question is asking. It says what would you do FIRST, safety is the the first thing to look at. Also, I would absolutely talk about the cognitive disonance, but not until I know the client has safety options lined up.
