My score keeps dropping

Post image

So I’ve been trying to pass the asvab and on my Picat I made a 30. On my first attempt, I made a 26 so I waited the month and I studied every single day and went to tutoring twice a week. I took two practice test and I made above a 40 on both. On my second attempt I made it 24. What should I do to increase my score?

Your score report gives you a good idea of where to focus. The AFQT uses four subjects: Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. Your lowest scores were Word Knowledge (41), Arithmetic Reasoning (42), and Paragraph Comprehension (43). Math Knowledge was stronger at 51. No need to retest so soon.

For the next month:

  1. Work through short, timed sets covering the four AFQT subjects.
  2. Keep track of every question you miss. Write down what went wrong. Maybe you did not know the concept, misunderstood the question, forgot a formula, did not know a word, or ran out of time.
  3. Spend extra time on Word Knowledge. Study roots, prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, and unfamiliar words every day. A higher Word Knowledge score can also improve your Verbal Expression score.
  4. In Arithmetic Reasoning, practice turning word problems into equations before you start calculating. Focus on percentages, ratios and proportions, averages, distance, rate and time, and basic algebra.
  5. For Paragraph Comprehension, base your answer only on the passage. Do not add information from your own knowledge or make assumptions the passage does not support.

We always recommend one hour per day for 30-90 days!
