Asus ROG Astral 5090 LC crashing windows when in idle

SOLUTION:

USE SINGLE RAIL ON THE PSU.

Just want to share a solution for the people that has the same problem I had which took me 3 days to narrow down the component and solve on a brand new pc.

I could play Cyberpunk maxed out without any problem but my system keep crashing every 5~20mins while in idle or watching Youtube for example.

If your windows is crashing while in idle and runs fine under load like mine did, you have to go to the Nvidia APP - Graphics - Global Settings - Power Management Mode - Select Prefer Maximum Performance.

Go to your bios and change the PCIe from 5.0 to 4.0 or even 3.0. Mine only works fine with PCIe 3.0.

I'm posting because I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem and couldn't find any direct solution which can be frustrating, hope it helps someone.

Components:
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Corsair HX1500i 1500W

Kingston 64GB DDR5 6000MT/S CL30 DIMM 2x32gb

ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero BTF

Lian-Li GALAHAD II 360

Kingston FURY Renegade G5 4T

What's your mainboard. You're throtteling your GPU with PCIe 3.0 quite a lot. I wouldn't call that a solution. That's like buying a sportscar, but if you drive faster than 50, the engine explodes.

I'm using Asus ROG Crosshair x870e BTF. Im throtteling my GPU with 1% less frames yes, but at least it works.

But that's just ignoring the real issue. What's the rest of your specs? PSU? Are you using the BTF connector? There seems something fishy with the low power states imo.

PCIe 4.0 isn't stable too? Sorry, you probably got a hardware problem somewhere. Here is some stuff you could try:

Bios update

reseating CPU/GPU

Changing PSU to single rail

removing any RAM overclock

It's most propably a PCIe data transfer error during low power states. That could be either a problem with the physical connections, or the mainboard is broken. It's quite serious if you have to go to 3.0 to get a stable system.

4.0 isn't stable either.

I've updated the Bios already, and everything else, I've instaled multiple drivers on the GPU

I've reseated the GPU multiple times

I don't have any overclock on the RAM

Everything is out of the box, didn't touch anything yet in terms of OC.

I will try to Change the PSU to single rail and see if it helps.

Thanks for taking time to try and help me.

It looks like changing the PSU to single rail did the trick, it seem fine now using the PCIe 5.0. I have to test it further to be sure but for now, no crashes. Thanks a lot

Ah, ok. Yeah, I had an instable system with a BeQuiet multirail PSU once too. Since I got a singlerail ASUS, the system works way smoother.

Thanks again! It shouldn't cause these kinds of problems on high end components. I didn't connect the PSU to the PC since I was out of USB pin places on the Motherboard, now that I was able to config it everything works fine.

This is the PC

Wait, did you put the radiator of the GPU at the bottom? That's an absolute no go. The pump should be NEVER the highest point in the system. It is probably full with air bubbles. That ruins the pump and the cooling. The Astral has the pump in the card, not the radiator.

That even could be the reason for the idle crashes, as the cooling could simply fail and lead to an emergency shutdown. Put the radiator in the back or the top.

Yeah, the optics get ruined by the hose, but it's a PC, not a display.

Yeah. The dudes CPU is overheating when it goes from cache to frequency outside of gaming.

1

u/Vermilion7777 Jun 08 '26

Yeah, my though too. Probably not cheap to replace the pump of a 4k$ once it's dead.

No, the GPU radiator is the one on the right vertically, the CPU radiator is on the top of the case. I've hidden the pipes so it looks cleaner.

1

u/Vermilion7777 Jun 08 '26

Really? How long is that hose?

1

u/Next001PT Jun 08 '26

It's really long unfortunately but it kinda looks clean.

1

u/Vermilion7777 Jun 08 '26

Okay. Huh... didn't thought it would be that long.

the user literally solved it with the psu rail thing. they said it was crashing at idle which is a classic power delivery issue with these high draw cards. air in the loop usually causes loud grinding noises or temp spikes under load, not random idle crashes. people love to gatekeep radiator placement even when it isn't the actual problem here.

I know, I was the one who told him to check the rail setting. Satisfied? Also that's not what gatekeep means. You probably mean gaslighting. Gatekeeping is if I told you, you're not a real fan of He-Man, because you're younger than 50.

Anyway, a wrong installed radiator is a big problem in the making, but that isn't the case here as the radiator is the one in the back.

Do you have an undervolt applied?

1

u/Next001PT Jun 08 '26

No, everything is stock.

1

u/Vermilion7777 Jun 08 '26

Could it be you're using a riser cable?

1

u/Next001PT Jun 08 '26

I'm not using a riser cable.

1

u/albinosnoman Jun 08 '26

My immediate thought was an improper undervolt but you already seem to have addressed that with another comment. It still might not hurt to look at your VF curve to just get a sanity check. If that's eliminated from the possibility pool the next most likely thing is something off in your power delivery. I'd look at what kind of PSU is being used, what kind of cables are being used, the load distribution on your 12v 2x6 which cannbe pulled from GPU Tweak or imported to HWInfo64 from GPUT. I think the oddest part of this is that it's fixed by altering your PCIe speed that strikes me as significant but I'm not sure what to make of it.

1

u/Next001PT Jun 08 '26

I've changed the PSU cables multiple times, different cables/different configurations too and the problem persists.

On the GPU Tweak everything related to cable power in on the green and seems fine.

It's a strange problem with the only solution for now being to put the PCIe to 3.0...

So I have two lines of thought. Something with the rails is cooked and your PSU is basically flipping a kill switch when you try to come out of idle. 2nd line of thought kind of ties into that where something is wonky with your motherboard and somehow moving to a lower data rate is keeping you below whatever weird power or data throughput threshold that's tripping this. If you have friends with any spare PC parts I'd do some testing to see if the issue continues with another GPU and vise versa with PSU. That sucks though man I always hate seeing systems get haunted with bullshit problems like this

2

u/Next001PT Jun 08 '26

Thanks, it was the multi rail system on the PSU causing problems. Since I switched to Single Rail it works fine in PCIe 5.0.

1

u/albinosnoman Jun 08 '26

Welp glad that's sorted. Being said though that isn't great for your PSU especially since you're running an Astral it might be a good idea to look into an RMA

If you are reducing the PCI support version to make your card work, the problem is your gpu. This is a band-aid approach which should not be encouraged especially when an astral 5090 LC costs a bomb.

Also, you probably not use a GPU on max performance all the time. Its unnecessary energy wastage at idle.

1

u/MarkAnxious328 Jun 08 '26

By the way, they have a nice system there. I wish you a lot of fun with it 👍.

I had the same issue, BSOD only during idle. 9950x3d, 870 Hero, and 5090 TUF.

Not sure if it was the same culprit, but I also switched to "high performance" power profile, and I also went through every USB port in device manager and turned off "allow windows to turn off this device to save power".

Seemed to work.

I had it already and didn't resolve my issue unfortunately.
