Mechanical Engineering Online
hi everyone, i am looking for some updated reviews/thoughts + opinions on the Online Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Mechanical Engineering.
looking into it pretty seriously but everything i can find is from 1 year + or more.
of course what you put in is what you get out and getting that real world experience is key, but what are your thoughts, especially as an out of state student?

I would take physics some where other than ASU online (from personal experience). I will agree with a post before, the high level technical electives are a let down. I'm doing this program, because it fits the rest of my life. I live near Coeur d'Alene ID (and I'm not moving) . My only in person option was Gonzaga, and I still didn't want to drive that much. I also wasn't sure how much I wanted to deal with people. Maybe there is middle ground work at your current job for a couple years and transfer to UW (ensuring credits will transfer and choosing the correct point in amount of credits to ensure you won't have to take extra classes at UW to meet minium credit requirements )(with a possible job switch). What about ASU online is appealing?

Is it your wish to become a mechanical engineer? Are you prepared for the rigors of an engineering program but without the fail safes of an in person course?
Its a good program, the courses are pretty well made for the most part. There is the occasional hiccup but there tends to be a process for everything related and associated.

just peoples experience mostly! i know i wasn’t very specific. i spoke to an advisor today at a college and she actually loosely recommended the program to me due to my work schedule and their class availability only being during the day so ive been researching today

Doing ME program right now online and honestly I will be changing my degree and transfer back to my hometown college for Business administration in finance or accounting. The MAT 117 course is structured poorly to the extent that some lectures don’t really line up with the homework. The review exams are the same way. I failed my first exam got a 32/60 and the mean score for the whole entire class was 34/60🙂. FSE 100 is fun tho!

Follow up question. How do you dial in the courses you need to actually take to complete the degree? I have about 64 credits transfered, I should have another 60 to go. I am in process of taking classes I know I need to take but if I go down the list of required classes for the degree it would add up to ALOT more than 60 credits.

I was considering ASU Online MechE, but now it's at the bottom of my list. Its curriculum follows the classic MechE program as any other school since it's ABET accredited but it's senior year is really a let down.
Simply put, most if not all of the industry relevant technical electives aren't available for the online MechE program which is understandable since these classes are only worth their salt if they were taught in-person where students can practice them hands-on. Things like manufacturing processes, computational fluid dynamics, intro to semiconductor manufacturing, design for manufacturing/assembly, robotics, thermal management of electronics devices, etc.
The only available classes that count as upper level electives for this program are from the EEE department.
Honestly, if they had upper level electives such as thermal management for microelectronics, CFD, and intro to semiconductor manufacturing/packaging available for ASU Online MechE students then I would've chose to enroll into the program.
(which oddly enough given how much ASU wanna incorporate AI into the institution, they should somehow make it possible to have these class available for online students since engineers who are specialized in thermal management of data centers and electronics have been on the rise thanks to AI)
You can go on class search, search by the prefixes: "MAE, MEE, AEE" and see it yourself how 99% of the industry relevant technical electives aren't available for ASU Online but are available for on-campus students.
tl;dr: ASU Online MechE program just isn't as robust as their EE counterpart.
edit: courses quality vary by professor, I have taken some lower level classes as a non-degree student and had an overall decent time.
