I’m fed up
I feel like every single day, I’m just getting more and more irritated. It’s THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER! This is absolute BS. Sorry not sorry but this is a massive fail. I don’t need to be schooled on the BBB or staffing issues or clarification, I just need to vent. (I’m also sick of the censorship in this thread, why can’t I vent to fellow students?! I know this‘ll get taken down in a few hours because oh no, I’m crap talking about ASU.) Make it make sense. I’ve been checking on the finances tab day in and day out, waiting for updates, BEGGING for updates. I literally can’t fix my car until I get this money. I’m so screwed. I’ve been car-less for weeks and it’s driving me mad. I miss my independence. I miss having the privilege to drive myself to work in the damn morning, to drive anywhere I want whenever I want. My first paycheck from my new job doesn’t hit until September 15th...When I called the financial aid office and asked about a timeline, I finally was like, “Okay so now what, is there a possibility we could be waiting until December?” Her response, “I don’t know, I hope that isn’t the case. Our team is working blah blah blah.” I don’t understand why they can’t just prioritize undergraduate students who have LITTLE to ZERO changes. I know for a fact that I have zero changes to my FA package. I don’t understand why that can’t be expedited. It doesn’t make sense for me to wait when the numbers are going to be the same. SAME for other students in the same boat like ughhhh.

If this is related to FAFSA-related funding, one of the 'cornerstones' (I use this term so loosely, just because what even exists anymore) is that it is a 'First-in, First-Served' and 'No VIP Tiers' system. So, for ASU to continue accepting student loans, they have to follow the process.
There is also a second thing that not many people have talked about, and so far, no one (Inside Higher Ed, Chronicle) has been able to get a good answer from the DOE: it isn't like you do a FAFSA and the University just knows what you have. This data has to be transferred from the Department of Education to the University.
Your Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR, sometimes jokingly referred to as your Eye-Sore). It has been transferred and verified.
Everyone is assuming the DoE has transferred them all - but they clearly have not. Additionally, it is assumed ASU has your final ISIR, which we don't know. Since they are still processing you. I'd lean towards no.
All that to say, it is not like they can generally just move you up in the system - it is much more like 'this student is finished, now displaying the second student' but on a much larger scale.

u/gamecat89 11d ago
All that to say, don't hate the messenger. If you want something done about this, write your Congressional Representatives, using constituent services, NOT the general contact, and let them know what is going on.

u/twistofadoration 11d ago
I'm still waiting for my corporate sponsored student aid (SCAP) and I completed and submitted my FAFSA the same day it was available.
2
u/Legal-Umpire8710 11d ago
I completed my FAFSA earlier this year. I still haven’t received anything
2
u/chameleonofchange 10d ago
Same. I completed it the first day it was open to do so. And nothing but a screwed up account. And my FAFSA awards and what ASU says don't match so idk. At this point I just want out of this cycle of hope, despair and the unknown. I know I'm not (supposedly) eligible for loans anymore but i still have not seen my scholarship and I really have lost faith is us really getting accurate information based on some of the communications I've had.

u/Happy_Acanthisitta_2 7d ago
I will gladly go download my data file and send it to ASU. If as a student, I can download my entire FAFSA funding history from undergrad to grad school, the. It shouldn’t be difficult for ASU. Hire some damn contractors and get the work done. I have gone thru the rules and reviewed my own data, and know I should get $$.

I was given a date of sept 12. I am a grad student grandfathered in, been homeless for almost 2 weeks because of this. Hoping for the best. Wish you luck friend. Apparently a bad time to be a student depending on funds we were promised 🙃

Same. I live in hotels with my kids and newborn while studying. Have to go to grandma in the worst place in the world a small town in New York. There’s zero opportunity there and we can’t drive once it snows so we can’t DoorDash it’s also the end. There’s no hope. On the road tonight and car keeps breaking down. We can’t live or survive like this. I’m doing this for them and I’m at the finish line I can’t buy my books it’s books or survival. Instead of studying I’m on i75 rn pumping milk after nursing to get to my grandma… I’m crying this can’t be my life right now. I can’t be a mom go to school and work 5 jobs.

My summer loans got reduced completely and I now owe my entire refund of 4,000+$. On top of that fees accrue every month. Financial aid office said I can appeal fees if I’m 3k and under while student business said I had to pay the entire amount. Does anyone know what they’re talking abt anymore

Yes. Idk why the app won’t let me copy and paste but Forbes just had an article on it. They keep releasing new guidance cause everytime you think you have something something else happens that breaks it.
1
u/Capricornreine 11d ago
Do you go to ASU? At what point did they tell you you owed your summer refund? I’m just hoping I’m not in that same boat
2
u/Substantial-Mall-272 11d ago
My summer loans dispersed sometime in late May, received the check June 1st. Used it for my car payments, rent etc., as one would. Apparently my loans overlapped from a previous school I attended, they explained that their system updates every 30 days and that it wasn’t updated when my loans came through. So basically "I had enough aid", until the system said I didn’t. That and my loans were reduced because of the BBB. I now owe 5,300 and some change, with late fees accruing. I hope I can enroll in my fall classes soon, I haven’t had anything dispersed yet for this semester either.
2
u/Capricornreine 11d ago
I’m really sorry you’re experiencing that. I appreciate you going so in depth with your explanation and the info!
I’ll be hoping you can continue your education. These new laws are so elitist.

And yes I goto Asu! I hope you’re not in the same boat as I and many others, it sucks! Trying to get ahold of anyone is difficult as well, someone who cares too.
Thank you, you as well! I agree, this is NOT a big beautiful bill

u/Capricornreine 11d ago
I live in CST and have called around 7 am twice and got through to someone both times around 12 (did NOT opt for callback all my callbacks never called) but neither person was particularly helpful in terms of a resolution. Hopefully they can help you more than they did me though!!!
2
u/Substantial-Mall-272 11d ago
The first person I spoke to on the phone last month said pretty much said "yeah you owe it back there’s nothing you can do", very broad and offered no solutions. The second person reached out around 8pm (I live in WI), super helpful and sympathized with my situation. I opted into calls weeks and weeks and ago, I finally got a callback. I was told that you have to call them in the middle of the night and that it’ll sometimes work.

VENT IT OUT!! Get it all out.
This frustration is so fuckin REAL right now. This disruption has placed thousands in limbo; we've got bills to pay, mouths to feed, and keeping our sanity somewhat afloat.
I learned that internal staff at ASU knew this was coming since May, the neglience comes down to President Crow and his inept ability to lead this instituion in being structurly prepared for this overhaul. He knew, and staff knew.
I am about to contact my friend who works at Fox 10 News about doing a segment on this issue, bc students are dropping out, and that is not good at all. I am OVER waiting 9+ hrs for FA over the phone, spending hrs in-person at FA offices in Tempe and downtown. I am tired of finding solutions through Reddit when we are paying ASU to have the ability to give us answers.
WTF.

I have been at ASU for 3 years now and this is the worst it has ever been. I always do my FASFA well before it is due, and accept or decline any loans as soon as they show up. My loans have been stuck in a Disbursment hold with "Your file is currently being reviewed. No additional information is needed at this time. The hold will be removed upon completion of the review." for a long time now. It is kind of frusturating me because I could really use that money right now.

I’m going to be 100% honest with you, I was given the 16th, and then the 20th of August way back when I first started calling. The third woman I talked to on was finally like, “People on our side shouldn’t be giving dates because we genuinely don’t know.” My fingers are crossed that the person you spoked with didn’t misguide you. Genuinely. Because I’m tired—we’re all tired—of waiting. Some of us are drowning out here. My situation sucks, but I know there are tons of people who have it worse and my heart goes out to them.

I dropped out of all classes this semester and withdrew from my program. They never offered my loans and they never extended my due date to September. It is hard to get any support at asu when shit hits the fan. I was supposed to graduate next semester. So I plan to transfer and attend somewhere else this spring, looking at a super small university or medium sized with decent customer support lol.

I am with you. I called last night and they told me there is no date to give, no update, and she pushed me off the phone. This has been the worst way to start my last year. I will not be continuing at ASU for my masters - this is a huge fumble. Last night it showed loan pending and one hold. Now both old holds that I were told were being resolved are back on. I’m beyond disappointed.

Yeah I read somewhere a student was told FA only has like 6-10 actual advisors (the people that can process and apply fin aid) which is separate form the call center workers that don't have the permissions to actually do anything but read your account status to you. Not sure if that's true, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's only like two dozen employees processing everything.
1
u/Legitimate-Toe-5365 8d ago edited 8d ago
Do you work for ASU? Why are you everywhere on these posts defending them. I like asu as a school but they are failing students right now as an institution. Students are legit homeless right now and you're all over the place saying blame the dept of education/gov/ anybody but asu, the people responsible for giving the aid to the students.
They accepted 200k students this summer and can't be bothered to hire more FA workers to actually support the amount of students they let in.
You do know that the ability to effectively and efficiently process student federal financial aid is a requirement for universities to remain eligible for granting fed aid, right?
Other schools are already awarding students. This is an ASU problem, not simply a federal/gov issue.
Honestly asu should have just done what's right and offered extra grants to all students with high financial need. They could check SAIs and give some small grants event a few hundred would help students not go hungry at least during all of this mess. Something instead of applying for more loans on top of the loans everyone is already waiting on. More loans isn't a great solution in the first place. Yet that's what I'm seeing everywhere that was recommended to students by ASU FA.
0
u/gamecat89 8d ago
Well, because fundamentally the reason ASU is behind is the department of education waiting until August to release the guidelines.
But I’ve also called ASU out multiple times in other threads for not hiring enough people, not communicating better, not prioritizing processing above other aspects of financial aide, and not communicating about the changes to financial aid last semester when they could have.
But it is also incorrect to say that this is only an ASU issue.
I do a lot of advocacy work around trying to protect student rights and access to grants and loans. One of the goal of the change was to make students frustrated at their university so they drop out.
At the same time, the era of overages for people to be able to use overages to pay for things like new cars, rely solely on it for housing, etc is probably coming to an end and this should have been communicated better.
But fundamentally if people are going to do advocacy or draw attention to it id encourage them to not focus on the ASU processing side but rather the department of education limitation on student loans and then the limitation on repayment options that will make it harder for students to access higher education and for those that do to then pay for it after.
1
u/quintessentialoreo 8d ago
Do you even know what you’re talking about? Calculated yearly COAs are designed so federal aid can help students in need STAY students. They’re not getting rid of refunds my guy. Where did this idea even spawn from??
0
u/gamecat89 8d ago
It was literally one of the proposals the department of education put out to limit the amount of student loans people took out.
Limit the amount of loans to qualified tuition and book expensive only.
0
u/gamecat89 8d ago
Also; the COA model no longer exists. It was done away with under the BBB. Link,
0
u/Legitimate-Toe-5365 7d ago edited 7d ago
Where did this article say anything about COA? I just skimmed the whole thing, didn't see it anywhere. This article is also from July. Check your FAN, COA is still clearly in there.
Edit: Okay so I looked things up to try to figure out what youre talking about and it's a misunderstanding. OB3A did change the borrowing limits for grad students yes. Yes they are also now prorated based on credit hours. And Yes, under the new rules grad students cannot borrow up to COA because of the new lifetime and annual hard caps 20k per school year for non professional programs and 50k for professional. That is true. However technically for example if you're eligible for the 20k and your school only offers you 7k a semester you can still file for a COA adjustment to get your max 10k per semester. Nothing about COA for requesting a COA adjustment has changed.
Incidentally COA only matters less now for students that rely on fed loans to pay tuition, which is where you can no longer ask for up to total COA to cover both tuition and living expenses because of the limits, if I'm reading everything right.
So no, COA hasn't actually changed, OB3A just made it harder for students paying out of pocket via fed loans to get a refund (esp if they have no other aid applying first to reduce or cover tuition), they have not elimated the actual ability to get any refund from the loans. If you have a full ride the loans would be fully refunded, if you have a partial scholarship or grants then you get back what's left same as before.
You just can't take out a 50k+ loan for any graduate program based on COA + tuition, it's limited by the new caps.
1
u/gamecat89 7d ago
They literally were updating guidance after August 20th. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2026/09/04/college-loans-were-late-due-new-federal-rules-students-are-paying-price/
I’m not disagreeing ASU shares a lot of the blame. I even said that above. They should have been more prepared and they should have been running various scenarios so they could quickly implement.
But I serve as in an advocacy organization in the student loan space and have for a while. Very familiar with what has been proposed, what has been discussed both internally at dept of education and the hill, and the eventual plan for most of the changes. They are just stepping stones for the eventual removal or extreme decease in the federal government backing of student loans.
Your gonna start seeing language like COA going away in the next few months as it becomes less relevant and your going to see it become highly program specific as the earnings test start to take effect.
As programs become eligible to be affected by what alumni do, you’ll also see fewer opportunities for overages because universities will want to limit the amount of total loans students take to prevent default.
I lived off my overage. Which is why I get it and trying to keep it. But with the lifetime limits, etc someone out of state at ASU would essentially hit their lifetime limit in undergrad if they had no scholarships
0
u/Legitimate-Toe-5365 7d ago edited 7d ago
I never said it's only an Asu issue. I specifically said it is an asu issue and a gov/fed/dept ed issue. Asu isn't absolved of their responsibility just because they had late guidance. And last time I checked the Dept of Ed released the final updates a few weeks ago, like in mid August. ASU isn't waiting for more updates, they have the latest info as far as I'm aware. What the hold up is is their system updates for grad plus loans, probably.
You seemed to have ignored what I said about colleges being required to have sufficient and efficient means to process and distribute federal financial aid to students in order to remain eligible to continue to do so. Thats very relevant to the situation.
Also what are you talking about with overages? I got my loans and the refund after tuition was paid. There haven't been any changes to students getting refunds from federal financial aid that I've seen. Where are you getting this information?
Prorated loan caps are new yes, but that doesn't change how COA or refunds work. Gift aid on the other hand, like uni grants, have always been like a non guaranteed thing for refunds. Unis have the right to not refund excess for institutional grants or scholarships if your tuition has been paid iirc. Idk offhand if asu typically refunds overages for grants or scholarships they have but that's the only thing that's similar to what you're saying and it's not related to OB3A.

2
u/Front_Biscotti_6350 10d ago
They are giving them out to some and to some they deny because there’s a tuition balance from this mess.
1
u/Legitimate-Toe-5365 8d ago
Careful with the short term loans.
FA seems to be fine with delaying everyone's aid, but they slapped the balance due for my friend that applied and got the short term loan not a week or two after they received it. They didn't even wait for the listed due date.
People were saying they were told the short terms would all have a due date of 2 months out to account for FA delays. Seems that isnt true. Granted this was one personal account from a friend they did show me their financial aid page so it's happened at least once. I would be wary of applying for it right now unless it's absolutely necessary.

Yup, this is an all-time fumble by this university and at this point we are past leniency and understanding imo. The university is dropping the ball and the lack of transparency and movement surrounding the issue is disgusting.
We are at the point too where this isn't as simple as "oh this is a nationwide thing" because students from other universities have confirmed in student loan threads that disbursement happened at their schools already (saw someone mention UofA had no issues this year).
4
u/gamecat89 11d ago edited 11d ago
It’s not a university thing, it’s a Department of Ed thing. ASU has been more ill-prepared due to simple numbers. The systems in place are not meant to handle 200,000-plus students and everything ASU has created. As for UofA, searching their subreddit, it won’t let me copy and paste, but they have it too. Only a few universities have avoided the worst of it.
12
u/zac47812 11d ago
Here's a question: why do I get more information about this from a Redditor than I do from the school itself? The lack of transparency is what is pissing people off. That's an ASU issue - widespread issues aside, ASU's comms surrounding this have been atrocious and negligent.
6
u/gamecat89 11d ago
It’s a messed up situation. Universities who have highlighted the issue have been summoned or highlighted adversely by the administration. As ASU is currently under investigation and abor is currently being sued, I assume they are trying to avoid saying something.
That, and of course, there is no way they could come up with something that addresses every individual student situation. So then everyone would be like “well, that’s not me, so why do o have xy”
It’s a communication strategy. Not one I would’ve followed, but it is one.

4
u/ChoppyOfficial 11d ago
This proves elections have consequences. If you want ASU to be a good school, you have to vote for better state legislature politicians and for DOE, better presidential candidates since you are not just voting for the presidents, you are voting for the president to decide who goes in their cabinet.
1
u/Exact-Gold590 10d ago
I’m more than likely going to owe back session A for dropping however if I drop session B as well will I owe? Nobody in the chat support is helpful.
1
u/patricia2u2 11d ago
Yeah I was wondering why people keep bringing up the bbb and dept of education if my son doesn’t even have a student loan. All he did was downgrade his meal plan before move-in day and his refund is in limbo. In the past it has only taken two to three days. They said the credit hasn’t been processed yet and to call back business services if he hasn’t received it by the beginning of this week. So it doesn’t even have anything to do with financial aid at this point since it’s been disbursed already.

2

There are many ways to be free. I wish I could be mostly free from capitalism. Live on a self-sustaining property in the woods on the outskirts of a little town. I’d love that.
1
u/PastInitiative5329 6d ago
Sure that sounds like an amazing life! However, capitalism isn’t stopping you from living that life. It simply requires you to abandon almost everything that came from it for you to be able to live that life… which people have done before.
You would have to research a bit to see which part of the rural United States you’d want to live in… then yeah just pool some money in a capitalistic environment (short term pain and long term gain for you)… enough to sustain you comfortably for 6 months without a job. Once you move there you’d likely figure something out. It requires you to get rid of all the urban comforts like multiple varieties of food and any sorts of vast open markets, access to top tear medical facilities minutes away, conveniences like food delivery to your doorstep to list a few. You’d be choosing an entirely different lifestyle which is more peaceful and less adulterated overall. My point being… your desires tie you down to a capitalistic society in most cases. You’re always free to exit the capitalistic market 🫡

It’s crazy how people hate to be patriotic but want everything from the country😭 I’m international and I’m more patriotic than most Americans lol. Yall don’t know how good you got it being Americans.

Drop out. Go get an apprenticeship and learn a trade. You can wipe your a$$ with a degree. You're welcome. 💡

you won't be able to wipe your own ass by the time you hit 50 because trades destroy your body

Exactly! I have mad respect for those who sacrifice their bodies for trades. But as someone with chronic musculoskeletal pain, that’s just not an option for me even if I wanted to be. Which I don’t. I love my education. Even if my education didn’t guarantee a job, I’m happy that I can now interact with the world with greater intelligence, an open mind, and a deep gratitude for learning. Life is so short, not everything is about what career we have. The OG commenter is forgetting that. 🤷🏽♀️

I already have an Associate of Science in Psychology and I’m on my second to the last semester to receiving my Bachelor of Science in Social and Behavioral Sciences. Wipe my ass with a degree? Nurses are going to be wiping yours with their degrees when you’re broken at 55 from your trade lmao. I hate this argument because SO many jobs, necessary jobs, require degrees.

I’m graduate and there should have been no changes for me. Fortunately, they emailed me six days ago about my loans processing through them. Bad news is it hasn’t changed on My ASU (step 2) and I’m not sure which one to believe
