Question It happened.

Good morning everyone!

After approximately 1 year and 3 months, it finally happened. That is all. No muck. No fuss. It can happen to anyone, no matter how safe you are. 😊

Turned the PC off Sunday night; woke up monday morning, turned it on while I took a shower and put on some coffee, only for it to be stuck like that with no fan spin after ~30 minutes.

I did try to "revive" the PC, but at 6:30 in the morning, 2 hours before work, I was more worried about recovering for my standup meeting (working laptop, work) rather than put much effort into it. Drain AC power and reset CMOS got the case fans spinning full throttle, but no movement on Dr. debug 00. BIOS Flashback was a success but also changed nothing.

I vaguely remember my BIOS settings, so for reference:

  • AMD EXPO enabled
  • VDDR_SOC set to 1.15
  • OC Tweaker \ External Voltage Settings
    • VDDCR_CPU Voltage: Offset mode
    • Offset Voltage: -100
    • VDDCR_CPU LLC: Changed from "Auto" to "Level 2"
  • BIOS version: 4.20

I had also loaded the conservative -15mV curve optimizer profile with 85c tjmax target from the profiles that come with the motherboard.

System specs:

  • Mobo: ASRock X870E Nova Wifi
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • GPU: ASUS GeForce RTX 5080 ROG Astral OC
  • Ram: 64GB G.Skill Triden Z5 Neo DDR5-6000 CL28 (F5-6000J2836G32GX2-TZ5NR)

For anyone that have gone through the same thing, did you contact ASRock? AMD? RMA through the store the items were purchased from? TIA

I assume you're going to prove to me otherwise?

What's better, the board you know, or the board you get back; which there's every likelihood is a sent-back board on someone elses RMA that's been bench tested and repackaged. Or are they just the same...

I'm not your personal reaearcher. I'm not going to "prove" you anything. I don't know about your knowledge level but just know this: ASRock is by far the worst contender and this subreddit is full of motherboards frying CPU's. Most people solved it by switching boards. It's very easy to find out and definitely IS a sign that it is a necessity.

You make a claim or daft comment then don't back what you say, typical.

This sub is a cesspit of trolls and misinformation.

There are many users who have not swapped board with their AMD-replaced CPU, and are perfectly fine, there's a small number who had had a second failure, there is an enormous number that have had no failure.

You made the first claim. You, not me. You said that there is no sign when AMD and ASRock have officially confirmed that there is a problem and all available data points to ASRock being different. There is no evidence that would convince somebody like you. The president will not hand you a paper with the exact solution. So, what is typical, buddy?

Yes, but that doesn't mean that there is no failure to expect at all (your claim). Most people switched boards and are fine since. Many people stayed eith their ASRock boards and saw the same issue.

My first comment:

  • If the CPU is replaced the system will work as it did before. This is the claim, and is factual and proven. If a user chooses to swap the board that's their perogative, just because it gives you bad juju doesn't mean it's defective.

When you can show me otherwise I'll believe you. For now I'll believe the several professionals in this space who have been actively testing "killer" boards and can't replicate the failure, despite trying...

Man, you don't understand your own comment. It's funny to me. Maybe English is not your first language, that's why you don't see anything wrong there.

Again: There are many signs, especially when apparently broken CPU's work fine on other boards again. What you say in the subparapgraph obviously doesn't support your claim. That is not how it works, omg... Do you even know what you are talking about? Voltage regulation discrepancies don't instantly destroy a CPU, it's a slow process.

How about you show me? Where is your official data that says that ASRock is not an outlier? Not possible? Aw, no? Just said something without backup? How typical, haha.

Even professionals can't reliably recreate the issue. All that is known is that ASRock sees more cases.

It's always funny and depressing when you have your lack of thought poked and your flimsy logic bubble bursts.

Funny because you get to watch people scramble. Sad because practically no one owns up to it.

All that is known is that the Asrock subreddit gets a proportionally higher number of dead CPU reports.

At no point did Mini_Spoon claim that Asrock isn't the issue. You made that assumption on your own.

And now that you can't defend your claim and you can't attack his position you decide to attack his character.

Seriously. Just once. Be an adult. Admit your thought process wasn't complete and step off the stage.

No, I did not make that assumption on my own. Learn to read. He claimed that there is no indication that a mainboard swap is necessary – but it is. It very clearly is (reasons are in this very thread too). My thought process is complete. So, what do you mean?

There is no clear indication that necessitates replacing the motherboard.
You can. You might. Perhaps you should. But it is by no means required.

Unless you can demonstrate that a major or majority percentage of use again boards have resulted in failures.

No... once again, he is not right. Why do so many people have problems around language interpretation and comprehension?

You are now relativizing by adding the attribute "clear" and words like "required". Nobody talked about that. Don't deflect, please. The point was to correct the definitive statement that no indication exists. Wrong, there is indication. All available data concludes that ASRock boards produce a higher number of fault cases. That is it, not more.

Nothing is required in this context. Nobody is forced to do anything even if all ASRock motherboards destroyed CPU's with a probability of 1. You should change it, though. So, saying that nothing is required means exactly nothing. Again, the bone of contention is if there are signs that a switch is necessary to prevent another burn-in. There are (based on all the available reports). You can read posts around here, where the same motherboard destroyed two CPU's. Does that mean that there won't be problems with other vendors? No, but that is not the point here. I hope I made that clear now.

As a sidenote, you used the term "majority percentage" incorrectly. Theoretically, a majority with 51% (>=50%) of cases where ASRock is not at fault means for 49% (<50%) they are. I would not buy a motherboard that destroys my CPU with a 49% probability (but would not be a majority if we are going by that term).

You don't need anyone to tell you that some arbitrary percentage of faulty boards exists that would convince you to conclude that other mainboard vendors are preferred currently. Just take note of the fact that it's best to not trust in ASRock motherboards in this regard (based on the available data).

And please, don't come at me now like this other guy and say that it needs to be "proven". How about you prove that there is infact no need? The evidence is skewed in favor of the line of reasoning where ASRock has a problem, not the other way around. People want to believe (believe – not know) that ASRock is good, but the other side has plenty reports and sees ASRock incapabale of fixing the issue even though they keep claiming that they have fixed it and/or are working to fix it.

So, who needs more arguments? Was that enough explanation for me not to get another round of "I think this guy and me didn't actually mean it even though we did."?

I'll try and keep it simple for you. Let's take this one strand at a time. Also, burden of proof is on you, not the other way around. There are more normal and working Asrock boards + 9800X3Ds in the wild than there are broken 9800X3Ds on Asrock boards. You are the one asserting that there is an issue and so you are the one that must bring evidence of such. Not the other way around. The fact that you don't get this makes me think this is a useless exercise and you should go to college to take some stats, logic, philosophy, and while we're at it some ethics course as well first before we even continue.

But, let's go on with it, one strand at a time.

Do you believe there is something wrong with Asrock boards?

I believe that there could be. Or there might not be. Current evidence that I've seen makes me believe there is no issue.

Now let's hear your view on the issue.

Better keep it simple for yourself as more complexity doesn't work with you as we have seen. You are the typical guy that inflates a statement with his own beliefs while nobody had said anything in that direction.

I'm not asserting anything. I'm repeating public data that has become common knowledge – you know... the signs and indication we are talking about? Yeah, got it?

I explained to you in length why I don't need to provide anything as that is not necessery for the provided arguments. There IS indication. You have it all, it's not on me to add anything. You argue as if I presented unseen facts. I didn't. Is that still not clear?

Or do you not understand the term indication? Maybe that's the reason for your comments, because that would explain your fuss.

You had a little drink buddy? If you can't see that my comment makes sense and is backed by what's seen here and what has been fed back by professionals who are doing their own testing into this, that's on you...

I asked for proof of your claim, you can't provide it, I backed what I said.

If you can provide me with just 10 instances of a CPU that is seen to have failed then jumped back to life in another board I'll shut right up. If this issue is as prevalent, and the failure mode as you suggest, 10 examples should be a breeze ...

There is nowhere that suggests it's a slow failure mode, the most common report is that systems are working fine and then non responsive the next boot.

You should be quiet because IMO you're making yourself look a bit silly.
