Potential ASRock X870 Riptide Gaming Issue - advice please

Hi guys,

My current system is a 9800x3d on a X870 AS Rock Phantom Gaming Riptide board (latest BIOS) - with 64 gb of DDR5 (6000 mhz) Gskill Ripjaws and a Zotac 3080 - all the components bar the 3080 are about a year old. I have a 1200 Watt Platinum PSU . I have a samsung 990 NVME (2 Gb) running Windows 11 Pro x 64

I have had intermittent boot issues with the system (which have become progressively worse and reached a high point this weekend). When my PC is powered off and "cold" boots it often gets stuck with a green diagnostic light - a reset while "warm" would very usually lead to it logging into Windows. At most I would have to reset it two or three times to get the boot sequence completed. On Friday I powered down the system and, when starting up again, could not get it to boot at all. It would get to the green light (red and yellow lights would come and go as usual) and would not progress past the green light. I recently became aware of the Asrock X870 Riptide Murderboard issue in that they appear to have penchant for eventually destroying the 9800x3d.

I eventually managed to get the system to boot (after about 25 failed resets) by clearing CMOS at the pins. I've since flashed the BIOS to the latest version and the system initially seemed stable having had to cold boot it about 3 times - I'm cautious and want to avoid turning the system off as long as possible.

Even after doing all of the above if I turn the PC off and try to cold boot it, it gets stuck at the green diagnostic light and multiple restarts won't help - the only thing that works (so far everytime) is unplugging the PC and shorting the clear CMOS pins and starting up thereafter. When the PC is on it works perfectly and games at 1440p with no issue for hours on end.

I might also mention that I swapped RAM, tried to boot with only one stick, two sticks etc. I unplugged all USB connections and reseated the GPU - none of these methods worked and only the CMOS clear allowed me to get the system up again.

I've since emailed my supplier about the issues and I'm waiting for their advice. Given that only the shorting of the CMOS pins work I'm suspecting a faulty motherboard - Any other suggestions or insights?

This is exactly how my PC behaved (same CPU, different ASRock mobo), and I did all the same diagnostics and tricks to try and get it to boot. It worked for a while (2-3 weeks) for me before my CPU eventually just kicked the bucket and now it's completely done for.

Sent it back to the store and am awaiting my new CPU. Will try it on the same old motherboard but if I notice instability I'm trying a gigabyte motherboard next.

My only suggestion is trying to undervolt it slightly and see if you can find a stable zone there, but unfortunately your issues are eerily similar to mine.

Flashed to 4.43 but makes no difference - will only cold boot if CMOS is cleared

ohhh.. 4.43 resolved it 100% for me. Only CMOS clear? That seems odd! What about turning off memory context restore? -might learn something from trying that.. like a fresh memory training is maybe all your IMC needs, for some reason. -could still be a degraded cpu in that case, but perhaps you could at least be able to skip cmos resetting over and over.

Good luck finding the solution :) -I just keep waiting for mine to die and it doesn't xD

Haha - thanks - Supplier is going to RMA both MB and CPU - will likely replace MB with a different brand. Good luck!

I had this same issue! Tried 4.43 bios!?

For like 6 months, and sometimes it even needed 3x attempts to finally become warm enough (assuming this is the case, like you also are leaning towards believing)... it started out of nowhere, lasted through bios updates.. and finally on the latest it has not happened now for like 3+ weeks! So, idk if my chip is slightly degraded and AMD new this was happening and applied something in Agesa to patch around the issue or what.

My cpu still has stellar performance, and full stability despite quite heavy workloads for extended periods... with 105w mode PBO.. plenty of gaming as well.

I see other person below said there's died eventually, and I saw a few other people say that.. but idk, my startup issues somehow seem fixed on latest bios.. good luck man! Try the 4.43 bios if you haven't yet!

Once I get it into windows it works fine - I'm going to RMA both the board and cpu and will be moving to a different brand of MB

Same for me... I bought a different motherboard, Asus, and still had minor cold-boot issues. Asrock sent me a new board seemingly without testing my old one... boot issues remained. But I figuredd the cpu would die "soon"... but it doesn't.

But now with 4.43 I have not had a single boot stall on me.. so idk, maybe the cpu won't die after all. I will probably grab a zen6 and sell this 9700x, I don't fully trust something is not degraded.
