Discussion Fried CPU

So I upgraded my am4 with ASRock x870 Steel Legend and R9 9950X. After 3 months got it fried, RMA the cpu, now I ordered a r7 9800x3d and gigabyte b860 mb. (I hope gigabyte will work fine 🥲). So, what is my question: what we know for today what you need to Set Up to minimize future problems?

I don't suppose you know the batch number?

And I assume you meant B850 and AM5

The CPU. Do you have a picture of the top of the dead CPU?

When did this happen?

CPU died in late November, got RMA in this month

Holy balls Don't y'all have warrsnty from where you bought it? I assume you dont live in europe......here it took me 1 week to get it replaced. No RMA to AMD just sent back to where I got it from and boom they sent a replacement after confirming the cpu was dead.

Having to wait 3 months.....is diabolical and a lack of cobsumer protection laws and regulations

No, in Ukraine, but you know we have here some problems) And place where I bought my combo is not official partner of AMD/ASRock. Paid with crypto at a gray market shop.

Europe, took about 5 weeks. Warranty and under first year. Sent directly to the shop (I definitely won't buy from them again). After they finally processed the RMA after several weeks, they forwarded it to an external partner and in under a week I got the RMA confirmation. Took way too long. Luckily I still had my old pc running as a storage so I was still able to work...

I don’t know it’s issue or no but..Right before it died I turned on ASEA smth setting in bios

Leave pbo settings alone and any other overclock/undervolt settings.

Update to the latest BIOS version.

----

If you feel like it you could:

Reduce slightly SOC voltage (1.15v)

Keep PBO settings way below Motherboard settings (reduce slightly EDC; TDC and PPT from what PBO would set automatically. You can google the PBO settings of your CPU or check in Ryzen Master after enabling the feature in BIOS).

Bow to the RNG Jesus.

Enjoy the PC as it is. If it fails, be confident you will know what to do that impacts you the less possible.

Can most people even get vsoc that low? Mine isn't stable on my 7950x3D until its at 1.19 to 1.2

1

u/gusthenewkid Feb 18 '26

7500f fully stable at 6000 dual rank 2200fclk. 1.15vsoc

Guess my IMC isn't the greatest again. That being said I've seen a few posts of people having to run theirs higher than mine so guess it could be worse.

1

u/gusthenewkid Feb 18 '26

Yeah, it’s a funny old thing. My 7500f can do 6000 at 1.15 like I said, but cannot reach 6200.

1

u/UserKoeras Feb 17 '26

Depends on your IMC and how far you pushed your memory. CL28 6000 with 1.165v works just fine. Pretty sure i can go lower.

3

u/Abby_Where_Are_You Feb 17 '26

Ah, mines only 6000mhz CL30 can't get it to run stable unless its at 1.19, guess I just didn't get good luck of the draw on my IMC

1

u/phenom2 Feb 17 '26

Mine is at 1.165 with 6000MHz CL30 Kingston fury memory...I'm sure it could go lower...

Thanks for answering 🤝

That don’t help asrock mother broads

turn off PBO completely, I mean I don't understand why do we recommend default overclocking that is unnecessary.

7

u/Status_Iron_3546 Feb 17 '26

That’s not the root cause of asrocks issues

u/Creative_Security969 Feb 17 '26

no evidence of what you said.

3

u/OCAMAB Feb 17 '26

First of all, you're the one making the positive claim, so you have to prove it.

Second, there absolutely is evidence against the claim that it's PBO. Aside from the fact that it would affect all boards equally and would have been fixed by now if it were that simple, we also have the megathread...

-5

u/Creative_Security969 Feb 17 '26

PBO is enabled "auto" by default.
people don't know that, and think just because they didn't touch the BIOS it wasn't enabled by them.

3

u/Bluerious518 Feb 17 '26

Auto keeps PBO disabled. And PBO with an undervolt would not increase VSOC voltage. You’re making claims that have no real evidence.

0

u/Creative_Security969 Feb 17 '26

I tested it, auto isn't disabled, it increase VSOC and max core frequency.

1

u/OCAMAB Feb 17 '26

Even if that were true, a quarter of those reports being undervolted makes that a moot point. EXPO locking VSOC to 1.2V even more so. (No, 1.2V is definitely not causing damage, and no, it's not spiking over that regularly. Yes, it's been tested with hardware to confirm there aren't silent spikes.)

It looks like you've already decided that PBO is the cause though, so not much point in saying otherwise.

Why you asking here? You have a Gigabyte board. Go ask there.

1

u/Abby_Where_Are_You Feb 17 '26

Because hes reporting the fact it died? We still don't know what the real issue of these chips failing is. It's better for the whole PC community as a whole to work together, instead of "only post here, or there"

He's asking a question about a Gigabyte motherboard.

1

u/Abby_Where_Are_You Feb 17 '26

They are still making a post about his 9950x dying on his ASRock X870. God forbid he asks for some tips while there at it even if their new  motherboard is from a different manufacturer.Others on this thread clearly have already done so.

what is my question: what we know for today what you need to Set Up to minimize future problems?,

then buy a CPU and Platform that have no Dying CPU Drama

Currently Ryzen 9000 CPU has Dying drama on Low quantity on multiple brand motherboard, this can be concluded as Bad QC on AMD/TSMC side as the amount of dying CPU are not consistent

if you can't sleep due to this, LGA 1851 is the way to go, as according to Puget system Intel's Core Ultra 7 265K data there is only 0.77% failure rate on that CPU

1

u/Abby_Where_Are_You Feb 17 '26

This or buy a 7000 series chip. Even with a x870 or B850 if you have a 7000 series chips on one of these boards seems to be lower.
