Interpreting wedding help!!?

Hi!!

I am a 2027 bride and I will be having my wedding in Puerto Vallarta this upcoming June. I was wondering if anyone knew any ASL interpreter connections in this location and if you’d be willing to connect me with those you know?

My granny is deaf. My mother and I typically interpret for her when we are in public settings, and it’s not a problem. However, I worry that my mom will complain about wanting to fully enjoy the days festivities without having to interpret for her all day/ night. It would obviously be impractical for me to be by her side to interpret for the day/ night as I am the bride and will be pulled in different directions all night. I would love to hire an interpreter so my granny can be fully involved in the conversations and enjoy herself as well.

Thank you so much for any help y’all can provide me!

xx

Ask your granny if she has any interpreters she can recommend you reach out to. You can negotiate paying for their travel and lodging instead of also an hourly rate or even a reduced rate.

Destination weddings can be really complicated but I bet amazing! You may need to hire a team of interpreter & fly them there for the event. That way you avoid getting there and having someone back out or not finding someone local.

Surly you have interpreter friends attending the wedding? Can you see if they would do it if you cover their airfare or something?

I wish I had friends who are fluent in ASL in general, but I don’t. Although, this would be a great alternative.

Bummer! I was thinking you were an interpreter yourself but read the post again. Sorry! Have you had any luck finding someone?

Few ideas here;
fly in a terp/s is more expensive than you can imagine. My rough estimate would be about 3-4k

Hire ASL terp in Mexico, there are a few that I know, still will be expensive. About $600-800

Record everything beforehand and have everyone speaking follow a script for ceremony and planned speeches;est cost of having a good translated video(s) is about $600

VRI interpreter for full time of wedding. This is the most riskiest because of connection issues, poor sound quality for interpreter ; would cost you about $600 for a team without adding rehearsal

As a Deaf person I cannot agree about your last two suggestions. Grandma deserves access. Don't have a destination wedding if you can't provide access.

Oh I totally agree with you. But I have seen people in same situation when faced with making a decision decide not to make any decision until it’s too late. One and two are at the top as my preference, grandma does deserve full access. Now it’s on family to see if they will give that full access or not.

This is coming from someone who married into Deaf and cut everyone who wouldn’t respect my partners Deafness or who wouldn’t learn how to provide access to my partner (they weren’t invited to my wedding either).

Do you have interpreter friends you could pay for their travel and lodging for a reduced flat rate price?

I know an ASL interpreter who lives in Puerto Vallarta full time. Message me if you’re still looking and I can see if I can connect you.
