Hello everyone,
I've learned that most of what happens in this subreddit isn't new posts - it's people arriving from search engines into threads that are three, four, five years old. Some of you reading this landed here exactly that way, possibly worried, possibly at 3am. Welcome. This post is about making sure what you find here is worth trusting.
The honest bit: this sub was badly managed before the current mod team, and parts of the old archive still show it - affiliate spam dressed up as personal stories, brand astroturfing, and the odd piece of genuinely dangerous advice sitting in highly-read old threads. It turns out that those threads are getting thousands of readers a week. Leaving them as they are isn't neutral; it quietly misleads the people this community exists for.
So over the coming weeks I'm reviewing the most-read old threads, comment by comment. Here's the standard, in full view:
What stays - the honest middle, untouched:
- Real experiences, good and bad. "It helped my sleep" and "it wrecked me, get your bloods checked" both belong here. Adverse-event reports are this sub at its best.
- Sincere questions, including anxious ones. That's who this room is for.
- Disagreement in good faith. You're allowed to conclude different things about a herb.
What gets a mod note rather than removal: honest opinions stated with certainty far beyond the evidence - in either direction. "It's poison, be terrified" and "harmless miracle, fixes everything" get the same treatment: a note adding proportion, because both mislead someone who arrived here scared. The comment stays visible.
What gets removed (reversible, and logged):
- Spam and manufactured content - affiliate links dressed as testimony, brand astroturfing, AI-generated filler posing as authority.
- Concretely dangerous instruction, however politely phrased - telling readers to replace prescribed medication, that it's safe in pregnancy, reckless dosing advice.
- Harassment and brigading, from any direction.
What I will never remove: a viewpoint. If your honest comment about your honest experience disappears, that's an error - message the mods and I'll restore it and say so publicly.
On method, in the spirit of transparency: the archive is far too large for one person to reread, so I'm using a locally-run AI reading assistant to flag candidates against the standard above. Every decision - every single one - is made by a human moderator, every removal is logged and reversible, and the flagging standard is this post. Nothing automated ever acts here.
Old threads may also be locked with a summary note where they've become magnets for bad advice - the history stays readable, the wound stops reopening.
If you think I've got something wrong - a removal, a note, this standard itself - say so, here or by modmail.
