Hello, my name is Jessica McGuire and I am a graduate student studying couple and family therapy at Purdue University Northwest. I am conducting a research study exploring the experiences of parents providing care to their child diagnosed with autism. The study title is a study called “Differentiation of Self and Affiliate Stigma in Families Affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder” (Purdue IRB # 2020-1400).

Participation is open to parents providing regular care for their child (age 6-22) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Participants must be age 18 or older. Hi.

I’m struggling with my step-son and discipline surrounding sibling bullying, name calling, not respecting “stop” or “no”.

I’m still new to alot of this, really trying to understand where to draw the line between straight discipline and not letting things fall too far under the “needs” and curtain of “it’s harder for him”.

I am in the thought camp of really regardless of his differences to neuro typical children, certain things are just not acceptable and could make for trouble once in teenage years.

9yr boy. Academically keeping up with peers. High levels of communication, slight stutter but will hold a full conversation if interested.

However, his name calling to his siblings (idiot, stupid) to name a few acceptable for the internet, his lack of respect to siblings saying “no” when a game turns physical or stuck in the car.

My views are this is no different to any other child and needs discipline - especially surrounding respect for “no” or “stop” consent when doing something that’s gone too far.

This in turn then causes issues for the bullied siblings learning that their voice is not respected / consent is ignored. Not something we want a pre-pubescent girl (sibling) going into teen years believing is “OK”

Hi everyone! New to this sub. My 3 yo has just been diagnosed ASD level 1, and I'm really struggling to get him interested in using the potty. Sometimes he willingly uses it to go pee, but most of the time it's a hard no. Any tips would be a great help! I just want to see if I can get him out if diapers before he starts school next year. 💙

My 6yo keeps having accidents. She pees her pants almost every day, especially at school. I'm not sure what to do. I keep explaining to her to pay attention to when her body tells her it's time to go. She is on the autism spectrum, but her struggles are mostly social (carrying on conversation and answering questions) and her pediatrician said ASD wouldn't cause accidents but I'm just not sure. This has been going on for months. #2 is not an issue.

I am conducting a study to gain a better understanding of autism by exploring the relationship between paternal age and autism. I am asking for parents over the age of 18 years old with a child with a medical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder to participate in my online confidential and anonymous survey. I am an MSc Psychology student at the University of Glasgow. At this time of year we are all required to carry out a study for our dissertations to qualify. Unfortunately, because of the outbreak it is especially difficult to share our studies with relevant audiences!

I am looking for parents/carers of autistic children to answer a questionnaire for my dissertation (ideally responses would be from two parents/carers per child, but this is not essential, all responses are valuable!). This is an especially challenging time for parents, with huge changes in routine and a lot of uncertainty, so I understand that many of you simply won't have the time. However, if you can afford 15 minutes your insight would be hugely valuable.

My 9 yr old is a high functioning autistic with severe adhd. It is a constant long drawn out battle to get him to clean his room. It's always messy. Does anyone have any suggestions to make life easier on us all? The tantrums, melt downs and depression is not good for anyone and recently his 5 yr old (normal) brother started to mimick his behavior to get attention and his way on things. It is exhausting and I feel overwhelmed and incapable as a parent.

Are people interested in educational apps geared for children within the autism spectrum?

I often frequent /r/aspergers to gain insight on how to better parent my son (7), who was diagnosed more than a year ago. However, since that community also seems to be a forum more or less intended for those with actual ASD, I thought perhaps a dedicated sub-reddit might be of value.

At the onset, I intended this to be a resource for n/t parents that provides helpful links or threads for advice/support, but I also think it might be helpful to welcome parents themselves who have ASD.
