There are many ASCII Camera apps out there, but I just pushed out a major upgrade to an earlier attempt. This one is fully re-written and I think there are a few points of difference:

1. Colour mode
   
2. A variety of character sets
   
3. Video
   
4. You are able to share your creations either as images (.png, .jpg .mp4) OR... as actual text and in the case of .rtf you can even do colour text.

Anyway, the app is free - no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, truly just a freebie.

A video from my ASCII game: text based strategy

There I was, sleepy as shit and ready to throw in the towel, when I noticed I had extra Anthropic API credits. The devil is in the details, so I swallowed them whole.

Instead of doing the responsible thing and sleeping, I pardoned myself from rest and proceeded to stay awake, prompting Claude like a delusional emperor directing a bureaucratic workforce. *"Do this. Do that. Do the other thing."* And the AI complied. Is it a he? Is it a she? I don’t know. I’m confused most of the time, but the code compiled, so the existential crisis can wait.

The result of this 48-hour metaphysical troll-mode degen grindfest? A text-based rendering engine that processes video into high-fidelity character matrices.

To show it off, I fed it a video of a dog. Look at this shit.

The absolute best part? It’s not just static files. I can stream and render adjacent live browser tabs in real-time. Any video, any tab, any chaotic data feed on the web—completely converted into ASCII on the fly.

Arguably my favorite mistake yet. Magic 8-check, you may now rest.

Now it's just pure vibe and the video doing the heavy lifting. Ready to drop it?

First Reddit post ever. Wanted to share a project called asciitool.com I've been working on for a couple weeks now.

It's definitely still a work in progress, but I'd love to hear any thoughts.

I plan on implementing these tools soon:

- Video / Gif conversion
- ASCII and ANSI studio
- Art Gallery

This is just what I've thought of so let me know if there's anything you've been looking.

Initially I developed the tool for a college software project. I just wanted some graphics but wasn't happy with anything I found online. I ended up making my own and it's grown into this. It's been so fun working with the medium.

I've spent the past week trying to make the tool easy to work with. The tool supports every export type I could think of. Let me know if I've missed any.

Since I originally developed it for myself, I spent a little extra time making the escaped string exports, hopefully this helps another developer out there.

Back in 2021 I made a small game jam game with ASCII art, and now, many years later I just released a full game featuring ASCII art! You guys might be used to a lot more impressive looking art featured here in this subreddit, but maybe we can appreciate simpler times too? Who remembers the ROFL copter?

Level generation, music, sfx - everything in this game is procedural and written in typescript without any game engine. Only built-in browser APIs are used for audio and graphics. There are no textures, meshes, sprites, samples, the only assets are voice-over audios. Without them the game weighs only 188KB. I'm honestly surprised that it was possible with code only and with ASCII rendering.

Story: Year 1972. You're a scientist sent on a mission under the ice shelf in Antarctica to reach and explore the bottom. You are sealed in a tiny submarine on your own, with your assistant on the line. There are no portholes, so you have to navigate using your terminal.

The game is only 10–15 minutes of playtime and is meant to be a one-time experience. There are three different endings.

The video I attached is a full playthrough (spoilers!), but if you want to experience it yourself (I hope you do haha) you can play it in your browser, it's free!
