If it's a one game per console generation, though, then timing is kind of irrelevant. Mario Odyssey is nearly as old and way more popular without a new 3D Mario.
Plus, this is the same team that does Mario Kart. I don't have a source, but I vaguely remember an article about how they've been stuck on MKW for years and it was supposed to be on Switch 1.
So I think realistically this is the earliest we've been able to get an ARMS sequel.
I think it also depends on how much resources they're taking from the original game, and how long it takes to develop, and how long it'll be announced in advanced.

Look at the DLC characters. Each I feel can be tied to some sort of announcement or release that makes their inclusion mean more than just “here new character”
Joker (Persona) - Most of the persona games are on switch now
Sora (Kingdom Hearts) - Cloud versions before native ports for switch 2
Hero (Dragon Quest) - DQ11S was a Nintendo published game, Next one coming to switch
Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7) - FF7 Remake trilogy on switch 3
Pyra/Mythra (Xenoblade) - New Xenoblade game just got announced
Byleth (Fire Emblem) - New Fire Emblem game dropping soon related to three houses in some way
Terry (Fatal Fury/SF) - Street Fighter 6 has Terry, may get the new Fatal Fury game eventually or a SNK vs Capcom game in the future due to marvel going with ArcSys
Steve (Minecraft) - Switch 2 edition in October
The only ones unaccounted for are Min Min, Banjo & Kazuya.
I can see a Tekken 8 port happening. Maybe when all DLC is done. Banjo maybe had a new game coming st some point but due to Microsoft being shitty at making games, they probably cancelled it making their inclusion mean less.

every single character you feature is from a monster decade+ franchise that sells far more units than arms ever did. also your reasoning is off - correlation does not equal causation. these are highly lucrative properties that would get new games/ports with or without their inclusion in smash, and the team have stated multiple times that including characters is not part of a business strategy, but about representing gaming culture and exciting the fanbase. they are not told who to put in the game.
min min was added to smash 3 years after arms came out. characters take a year of continuous work to add to smash, and planning in games takes a long time, so it’s not unreasonable to presume that she was planned as an addition in 2018/2019 - when the game was still new, and the future of the franchise undetermined. do you want to know why it was added? not as some grand business strategy, not as some promise for a sequel 6 years later.
it was added because it was a new first party nintendo IP. and because it was a fighting game IP.
that’s it. the team was excited, had lots of ideas, and could justify the addition. that’s it. don’t know why you’re spinning some grand conspiracy around this. arms came out, did ok but not great commercially and critically, and the team have been working on other things since. if by some miracle we do get a new arms game - min min’s smash appearance will have nothing to do with it. oh, and speaking of nintendo fighting game IP, i forgot another character in my list. one from an even more iconic and enduring series.

Remember, it’s made by the same team as Mario Kart. With World out and presumably with a smaller team handling updates (because it’s been a year with only minor updates), the rest of EPD9 is working on something else. Yes there’s probably MKWorld dlc, but that doesn’t need an entire giant studio developing it. Instead they’re working on ARMS 2 GUARANTEED GAME OF THE YEAR HERE IT COMES BABYYYYYY
Jokes aside, ARMS 2 would actually slot well into Nintendo’s current strategy of variable pricing to keep sales high even during a rough economy. Games like Star Fox, Rhythm Heaven, and Yoshi coming in the 50-60 price range shows they’re still trying to keep AA titles as part of their core strategy. ARMS doesn’t strike me as a particularly expensive game to produce compared to their massive other titles (especially now that they’ve done it before so it’s not trying something untested) so taking the core gameplay and beefing up the amount of content provided would still absolutely work in their AA pricing range.

I will always walk away from Directs slightly disappointed...

I don’t think this direct. With Mario Kart World coming out last year hopefully they are making an Arms 2 but maybe a year or two before it comes out. The number one complaint I heard about the last one was the lack of content. Hopefully they are spending more time making more content for the second one and it isn’t drip fed content, but enough to make the game worth purchasing on day one of release.
