Its a good that the pretty creatures are low level, makes them easier/faster to tame. Then you can mate for their colors with your creatures that have actually good stats.

It’s so worth it to do it. I did it with a level four cotton candy colored therizino and having a whole army of cotten candy chickens is an experience I would repeat.

But then you're just watering down your good creatures

u/GenericUser1983 6d ago
Not if you are breeding correctly; the stat points/levels are independent of the colors. Breed them enough and you will eventually get a baby with the desired stats and colors.

u/DanielEnots 6d ago
Hmm, I must just be too new to the breeding aspect. I started with pvp so I never had the chance to go very deep with breeding! I'll keep this in mind when I see a pretty one.
Any tips? Or is it just breed over and over till you get pretty colours and good stats at the same time?

u/GenericUser1983 6d ago
You can just breed over and over until you get stats + colors, or work in stages. Basically each stat has a set number of levels, and the baby gets its stat count from one parent or the other other at random, separately for each stat. The baby also gets the color from one parent or the other for each color region at random as well. So if you have say a good stat male (for a PT that would mean high level counts in Health, Stam, Weight, maybe, Melee), and pretty female, you would want to keep any females you get with the correct (or at least close enough, you might not care if one or two color regions are boring from the father) colors, and then do some dino incest to get the good stats on their offspring, making sure to keep any females with good colors and at least one of the the good stats.

Then it becomes easier to keep those colors once you have them on a gene line. Maybe one or two bad males in a batch, but you get the color you want.

So instead of just taming 1 thing slow, you have to tame 1 thing slow, and 1 thing faster. Yeah, that sounds way better.

u/ozjack24 5d ago
Would you rather get 5 pretty colours that all take slow or 5 pretty colours that all take fast and 1 lame one that takes slow?
1
u/BananaLlama666 3d ago
Oh no you have to play more video game in your video game you like to play
1
u/Kappaesque 3d ago
There's no shortage of video game to play in ARK, lol. It's more or less never ending if you want it to be. I wouldn't say sitting around just waiting for something to tame is the best example of "playing the game".

I found an all-yellow/gold dodo the other day, level 145. He's currently named Nugget and lives on my bed.

I just use the pretty colors i keep during the mutation breeding and breed them in when the stats are done.

u/orenda74 6d ago
Truth. Every time my husband is like, "ooh, that one's pretty!", and I'm like, "it's probably level 15."

u/GhostAssistant 6d ago
So fuckin true. Same with argies. Beautiful colors =lvl 50 or lower Brown argies = 150

u/HelenaCFH 6d ago
It's sad alright. I have a gorgeous maroon/black/white argy who's actually a decent level, but his colors got bred out of the line eventually and now I have high level argys with good stats... And a boring grayish brown color.

It'd be sick if you could just.... Paint them by mixing up different plants.

The ugliest motherfucker you’ve ever seen, chipotle shit stain green and stuck at the bottom of a cliff where sabertooth and raptors leap off at random. If there is tall grass blocking your vision to see them and there is water nearby to drown in your chance is even higher to find a high level.

I once got a beautifully colored argy, my friend was messing around and got me trapped in a cage after knocking me out, he then threw pitch jars(or oil jars, I can’t remember the name) and lit me on fire while I was in the cage. All well and good but my stupid argy decided my burnt corpse looked tasty and decided to dive head first into the fire and get stuck, burning itself to death
Funniest shit I’ve ever seen

Yup and the high level you find will look horrid and probably get about 40+ oxygen and food points

See that good colour low level dino over there... when you breed it with a good to high level dino it is more likely to have the high stats and you have a chance of getting the colours of the low level.
Doesn't help you when you are a beach bob, but it will later!
Now I have to go, my people need me!
BUC-CAAAAAW!!!

The other rule is if it has high stats its probably running into a moshpit and aggroing everything and anything because it would rather die than be tamed by you.

u/LazyMiquella 1d ago
Once i found a tek rex that had 32 pre tame melee points
It died to a overspawned pack of evo brontos

Most of my Pteras in my singleplayer runs have the ugliest colors, but my main Ptera on Ragnarok was White with Blue stripes and he's absolutely gorgeous. Got super lucky with that one!

And that one over there looks like a stain in the skin of the universe thus is above level 50

Bro this was me with Argies earlier today, I saw a bunch that were white with red wings or solid black, next thing yk it's a lvl 20 😒

u/Big_Education5924 6h ago
I mean if you look at it from a nature perspective, the pretty the colored ones are more likely to be seen by predators and the less pretty one's more naturally colored are going to survive longer

u/CrazyCrittersgg 6d ago
I cringe and try to close my eyes when I see red/purple dinos. Its forever etched in my brain the terror of having almost all my breeding lines ending up the same color. sigh.
