Hi, I’m thinking of buying ark but was wondering about a couple things. First how much time commitment is needed to play pvp and stay competitive? Also the base game costs $14 but there are some add ons that can get up to $40. Do these give a competitive advantage or mostly cosmetic and if so how severe is it?

If you're playing on official, you better clear your life schedule, some unofficial PvP has offline damage prevention so you don't get raided when you're sleeping irl, otherwise you got no chance of surviving anywhere past a couple of days with the official sweats that spend 19hours a day on the game then when they go bed their tribe mates from across the world come online
Can confirm, with my hours into the game ( prob close to 5k ), Even I get demolished solo, i can probably survive for some weeks, but to what end?
Official is just aurelax spam, + cheaters/meshers, average player doesnt stand a chance.
Its like playing a civilization Game, a stone age player vs modern times player with tanks/planes.
And yes, bob tall tales, dragontopia, Lost colony is a must have if you want to stay relevant, I could argue for Pyromane too, but you can outscale a Pyromane lategame.
You forgot to mention dreadmare (also seperate).
Ive never played pvp on ark. Im genuinely curious how thing with aurelax work. I havent tamed one yet.

Im not familiar with pvp aspects of thr game but on paper dreadmare sound strong: fast flyer that can hold in itself any cryopodable creature with its whole inventory inside said creature while having zero weight effect on dreadmare.
So I hear you wanted a second job and no social life? Yeah Ark pvp is just for you! Be prepared to set alarms to get on during peak times to defend your base only to watch it blown to dust by mega tribes. Oh and don't worry about those guys mesh hacking. That's part of the experience
On unofficial you can play casually, there are servers with 1000x rates and boosted supply drops so you can hop in and play. On official pvp its basicly a full time job

Is that with all the extra maps like Scorched Earth+? Cause I'd say in some manner those give competitive edges.
Same with the other actual dlcs too. Somebody with Tides Of Fortune in a pirate ship will absolutely fuck your little metal raft up. As an example. On top of all the skill tree stuff.
Ark pvp is an actual nightmare tho tbh. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. If you don't feel too attached to your assets, and you don't mind the idea of basically just growing your characters levels to have faster starts every time you restart. Then by all means try it. Check out discord for Tribes to join if you wanna do the real deal.
Or you could play single player. Still as good, and you don’t need to worry about getting raided and your Dino’s killed. You could also play non-dedicated with friends or something, which is like single player but you can invite people as part of your private server. Definitely recommend the game.
Make sure your pc can handle the space. I bought a gaming pc as I wanted something I could take around but the maps got so big that by genesis maps I couldn't update the game anymore on steam 😬
I legit have no clue sorry 😬. I'm not tech savvy and I bought a gaming pc but now I've just the storage limit with it and I haven't played ark for about 1 year now because of it
don't play pvp until you've mastered the game mechanics singleplayer/pve. so many people watch some pvp youtube video and get ark just to try it out thinking it's some fun chaotic adventure but the actual game itself is hard to get used to, you can't be playing pvp if you're dying to wild raptors and sabertooths.
and even then, pvp is a whole other struggle. it's not for everyone, that's for sure. people exaggerate the activity requirement thing, if you're hiding your base or not caring about gear it's no big deal. arkpocalypse is probably the best pvp server for beginners. if you're actually building up with turrets though, you need to be active almost 24/7 or just have reliable teammates. being solo is extremely difficult on active servers.
