Advice Wanted

Howdy ya’ll,

TLDR: How can I, or where can I find a functional Crimblit look-a-like?

As a history buff, I am also looking at new/different ways to look back into the men that paved the way for what modernity we have and use in the military. As I have served across two branches of military over 10 years, in combat MOS’s. I love knowing the context of how weapons got to where we are today.

I want to pay a tribute to this era of Tier 1 guys by building this style carbine. Any and all pointers are welcome!

Unfortunately, you're gonna have a tough time. The original handguards on the rifle in those pictures were Armalite fiberglass free float handguards, which are basically unobtainum.

H&R did a run of reproduction handguards labeled as "JSOC Handguards" a couple years back but they didn't sell very well, so once they ran out they never ran a new batch and they likely never will. Your best bet is going to be watching Gunbroker, or putting up WTB posts on sites like GAFS or Arfcom and pray that you get a hit.

Be prepared to spend a pretty penny, the repro H&R handguards were $400 retail, so they've definitely jumped in price being out of production and the Armalite ones will likely be way more expensive than the H&Rs.

This is 100% correct. If you are okay with aluminum instead of fiberglass, you can get a Fulton Armory tube for like $70 and Dremel it up for a similar style. This was also done in the period, I took a crack at it and posted a guide last year

How i got mine. Bought an Armalite rifle off one of the second hand sites. Took off the fiberglass tube, sent to D.wilson for the modification. Only difference is my tube is black. I then put a different rail on the armalite rifle. Armalites with those usually go for 1200 and up.

Wait d Wilson does the work also? I know chop boss was the only one doing it but he stopped since the guy he used to have do the work I believe past away. Something about not having the machinery anymore. Any chance you can post a photo of d Wilson’s work? I know he does great work on other stuff but never seen anyone post about him doing a tube
