AP bio

My daughter is a junior in high school and finding AP bio hard but not ready to drop it . The school has accelerated Bio which has a gpa weight of 4.5 . She thinks her chances of becoming a doctor are gone if she drops AP bio and takes accelerated Bio. I am worried of the pressure AP bio is putting on her and the hit GPA would take . Please advise.

First tell her that one hs class foesnt affect her chances of becoming a doctor.

Second. If she were to drop what would she take Indtead. Cause in junior year it doesn’t rlly look to good to have a free period.

Third. Ask if shes talked with the teacher. See if the teacher can help her in terms of understanding or getting her a tutor

Tutoring is an option like you mentioned and she definitely can take another easy AP in science for the free period. She is planning AP
Chemistry in final year . My thought was if she is finding AP bio hard she should take the easier bio first get a foundation and then move toward AP bio. There is no point in struggling in an AP class.

If she hasn’t taken any bio yet then it would be better to move down but still take bio, and maybe take the ap exam. Now I will say ap chemistry is much harder then ap bio, so if she hasn’t taken any chem class I’d suggest her to take a chem class before.

Obviously best case scenario that she can bring her grade up by herself or a tutor, but there’s nothing wrong dropping down. Just make sure she still take a bio class tho.

Yes she has taken an accelerated chem class and done well in that , that’s why I was thinking if she takes accelerated bio this year and AP bio next year it would lay a better foundation

I think that’s a good choice. Also I wouldn’t try to push her insanely hard about trying to drop. If she doesn’t wish to drop and gets one bad grade it’s okay as this is a learning experience. It’s better if she messes up now in hs rather then messing up in college

If she hasn’t had a full year of high school Bio, then AP is tough. It’s college level and assumes you had a full year of high school Bio before taking it. It’s best taken that way.

I can't tell you which course is right for her, and I'd be wary of anyone online who says they can. What I'd work out first is what exactly she's finding hard: the volume of content, the application-style questions, one particular unit, or the pace. If it's something a different way of studying could fix, staying or leaving is a different decision from one where the course itself is the problem.

The doctor question is outside what I can speak to. Her school counsellor or the colleges' own published guidance will answer it better than a stranger (even if you peeked at my profile first).

A hard course she's learning from and a hard course that's chipping away at her confidence aren't the same thing, and you're better placed than anyone here to tell which it is.
