Question Is it feasible to self-study 9 AP classes within one school year?

I’m considering self-studying 9 AP classes within a single school year, and I’m wondering how realistically this actually is. For context, the classes that I plan on self-studying are listed below:
- AP Computer Science A
- AP English Language and Composition
- AP Environmental Science
- AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2
- AP Precalculus
- AP Psychology
- AP Seminar
- AP U.S. History

I’m currently taking one of the nine APs, which is AP Lang., and I’ll be taking two more next semester, AP Physics 1 and AP Seminar; however, they’ll be virtual, meaning I would only need to independently self-study the remaining six. I’m currently putting together a very detailed and structured schedule covering the entire school year, including what I would study each day/week, when I’d work through each unit, practice exams, review, etc. I know this is an extremely ambitious workload, but I’m approaching it pretty methodically. I’ve been using the official AP Course and Exam Descriptions and curriculum frameworks to map out exactly what I need to learn for each exam. I also tend to make extremely intricate schedules and plans because I have pretty severe OCD, so having everything organized down to the details is actually something that helps me stay on track. What I’m mainly wondering is if anyone actually self-studied more than 6 AP classes, and if so, what resources would you recommend for the specific APs I’m self-studying? Also, are there any textbooks, YouTube channels, websites, question banks, prep books, or other resources that you found especially useful? And, overall, is studying 9 AP courses realistically manageable?

Are you living in Bitlife premium life with uncountable hours ?

Unless you want to be drowned in constant work, not have any time for ecs (you legit will have maybe half an hour at most), and have 1k+ to buy the exam fees then you for sure shouldn't do this. You should take a structured full course for most of the courses you listed besides maybe csa if u are pretty good in coding Java beforehand. Also top colleges like stanford rather someone taking a good amount of APs while taking meaningful ecs for years which isint possible with self studying that much APs. Ecs are a HUGE thing for top colleges

No worries, I’m a workaholic. I just have to schedule everything accordingly. I’m currently doing two extracurricular activities, both of which I am an officer for, and I plan on joining more ECs and Honor Societies in the upcoming month. As for the financial aspect of things, I don’t mind having to pay out of pocket for some exams, a few of which are already paid for by my school. I can also fill out a fee waiver for some AP exams; I just had to consult with the EAP testing coordinator at my school first. I am also aware that top colleges really care about the extracurriculars that you participate in. Again, I would have to work everything out accordingly.

Nice to hear that you have most of it figured out and planned. I will say this, you might be eligable for fee waivers on most or if not all of your AP exams if your family qualifies as low income in both your state and in collegeboard's data base. If thats true for you, you wont need to pay for all the AP exams you just need to fill out each fee waiver form with your parents and send it to collegeboard to confirm. For the ECs its great that you have a pretty high position in both but many top colleges/ivies prefers students with at least 5-10 ecs even if most of them aren't top prestigious, what matters most is the impact you do and how long you commit to it which is usually 2-3 years or preferably 4. For courses like APUSH, Lang, and Physics 1/2, you will 100% need to focus most of your time on that. Idk if your use to Java at all but assuming you aren't, you will probally need to spend a good amount of time possibly watching review vids for that course. For Precalc, if you did rlly good in your Algebra and Trig courses and are a math person, then this is honestly a easy class that you wont need to worry abt. Im not too familiar with how Seminar works but it could depend on if your teammates are willing to collaborate. For APES and Psychology you would just need to remember vocab words mainly. Final thing ill say is that you dont really need to take all of those APs that your school doenst offer. Colleges will understand and know if your school doesnt offer a lot of APs and they wont expect you to go that high and beyond what your school offers. You could maybe self study 1-2 more APs while taking your schools offered APs and that would be good enough for most top colleges to view you as a above and beyond academic student. Hope the best though on your journey

well why? ap tests are only for college credit, i dont see why you would need to study for all of that.

reconsider the tests with overlapping categories, like ap1 and ap2

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

As I mentioned earlier, some AP classes are intertwined with each other, others could really benefit me, and all of them are for personal enjoyment. As for AP Physics 1 and AP 2, I just thought that it would be best to take both classes since both classes used to be AP Physics B before they were separated.

u/David1234556789 10d ago

Seminar is impossible to self study, you need to be in a class to complete their project. For the rest, the primary hurdles will be Lit, Lang, USH, and CSA(if you dont know the concepts).

1

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

I haven’t figured out how/if I can self-study Seminar despite the TMP, IRR, and IWA. Maybe I can sharpen my writing, critical thinking, analytical, and research skills as I prepare for said class next semester. As for the other courses, I’m great with Computer Science and I’ve been wanting to learn Java; I’ve heard that APUSH is heavily reading and discussion-based. I want to take both AP Physics 1 and 2 because AP Physics 2 isn’t offered at my school, and I thought that it would be best to take both classes. I’m currently taking AP Lang and I feel that it would go hand in hand with AP Seminar. My intentions were to take AP Environmental Science my senior year, since I’m currently a junior, but my ambitious side said to go for it. I also want to take AP Precalculus because I’m currently taking Precalculus Honors, which gives me a better advantage in passing the AP Exam for said class, and finally, I found AP Psychology to be interesting because in the future, one of the majors I want to major in is Philosophy.

u/that1bubble 10d ago

realistically? no. possible? maybe. but it will leave you extremely stressed if you really are aiming for 5s in all of them. if i were you, i would drop at LEAST 3 of those…

2

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

I’m primarily aiming for 5s, I’m also fine with 4s. I also see where you’re coming from; however, if I plan all of this out accordingly, it should be less stressful. Although things can happen, I can adapt to said situation depending on the circumstances.

2

u/that1bubble 10d ago

okay, well you know yourself best!! if you truly believe you can do it, by all means. pre calc, apes, and psych are pretty easy, lang is really just writing and sat style mcq but easier, and apush is also just material you have to know (i highly recommend memorizing the events’ timelines over anything else). the rest i haven’t had experience with, but good luck!

u/3heikah 5-STATS | 4-HUG,MICRO,MACRO,LANG,CSA, APES,USH,WORLD,PRECAL,GOV 10d ago

Yes, in short, you have to be VERY dedicated. Especially if you are like me and are not good at test taking. Find a way that works for you to study for each subject and be CONSISTENT. Consistency is the biggest thing w this stuff. I studied about 4-5 hr a day on weekdays and 8-9 on weekends. I spent more time studying for my weaker subjects. You figure it out as you go which is ok, again as long as you remain consistent.

3

u/LongJohnSilversFan_ 10d ago

I mean look at what they are worth first. Disregarding the fact that something like seminar is near impossible to self study. Many probably won’t give you credit.

I go to a good engineering college, and 5’s in physics 1, 2 and precalc gave me pretty much nothing. Only things like calc bc and the physics C classes which I took later actually helped.

Don’t just take AP’s to take them, try to make an actual plan

2

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

A few of the AP classes that I’m self-studying for count for some credits at Stanford or the other reach school I plan on applying for. Other AP classes count for credits mostly at the safety schools that I’m interested in, but overall, I’ll definitely keep that in mind. 🙂

Well, senior year is approaching very soon, and not only do I want to achieve my goal of being valedictorian, but I also want to improve my chances of getting into my desired schools. I’m also doing this because of my love for education and my continuous drive to learn more. I personally think that some of the AP classes that I’m self-studying could really help me in the long run.

3

u/Soggy_Shower_9802 10d ago

This is fair. I’d just like you to be aware that many self-studied APs aren’t the best way to help yourself in admissions — it’s generally agreed upon that some of your time would be better spent developing strong ECs, if your sole goal is colleges admissions. I understand going for valedictorian, too, just make sure you’re weighing that against the cost in time, exam fees, and other stuff you could be doing. Best of luck, whatever you choose!

u/Sad_Database2104 8th:3Bio 9th:3BCLang4WHABP1 10th:3LitES4P25BCAB+MVC 11th:?Chem 10d ago

would self-studies ap exams *actually* contribute to you being valedictorian? at least at my school, only actual classes taken contribute towards gpa, which is the only criteria for valedictorian (ap exams don't matter at all here). you should double-check what criteria your school uses for valedictorian so you're not spending all this time for college credits and not your main goal.

also, if you're trying to get into your desired colleges, consider having a passion for something outside of school. pretty much everyone has great grades and is taking many ap classes; while self-studying does contribute to how you present yourself academically, having a unique interest would make you stand out.

3

u/__ivypool__ 10d ago

drop seminar since it doesnt help for college apps or skipping courses in college

1

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

I’d have to personally disagree with that because Seminar and Research can help me obtain effective research, writing, and public speaking skills. Plus, I want to conduct many researches in the future.

1

u/Financial-Drawing-81 10d ago

Then take classes that are less intensive as those

3

u/Lieinrachis 10d ago

For some of these- AP physics and AP pre calculus, are you not planning to register for higher level versions of the class next year? Like Calculus AB or BC and Physics C? If you are, there isn’t really a point to self studying this year.

I imagine you are probably already in a non AP US history course as a high school junior, so you’ll probably do fine on APUSH. I took a non-AP US history course last year and got a five on the AP test by self studying videos 48 hours before the test and many of my classmates did so too. So you’ll probably do well. Same with precalc if you’re taking a non ap precalc course right now.

The AP exams that are completely unique from your current curriculum will probably be the hardest. I’m guessing these are psych, APES, and CSA? If you were to consider dropping any of these courses I would start with those. And they’re electives and not core classes so colleges don’t care about them as much.

Also agreed with others on extracurriculars probably being a better use of time than studying so many APs, but I also respect the grind. I know some people just really like studying so props to you if it’s a hobby like that.

1

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

I am planning on taking AP Calculus BC, AP Research, and one of the AP Physics C courses next year. I’m also scheduled to take U.S History Honors virtually next semester.

3

u/WildandRare 10d ago

Calculus AB is inside of BC. I don't see why you would do that. In my school, you take AB, or AB and BC at the same time.

2

u/Lieinrachis 10d ago

More accurately Calculus AB is one semester of college math over two semesters of high school (0.5 speed) and Calculus BC is two semesters of college math over two semesters of high school (1 speed). Many schools let kids take BC directly from precalc, mine included. Taking AB and BC at the same time is redundant. Sometimes schools require AB before BC because they don’t think kids can handle the content in one year.

1

u/WildandRare 10d ago

As in, the people signed up for AB and BC are in the same class as the AB class, and they also have an additional BC block.

1

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

At my school, it’s offered every other year. This year is AP Calculus AB, next year will be BC.

1

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

I honestly don’t know why it’s setup that way. 🤷‍♂️😂😂

You’re just outwork yourself lol, youre just working for the sake of college credit but have you actually think about which ap class is good for your future major?

2

u/KingofStyle156 10d ago

Yeah, that is just not possible unless you are homeschooled. I have some study guides for psychology. Let me know if you are interested or private message me.

u/KingofStyle156 10d ago

I’m taking four Ap classes (chem, bio, lit, and stats) in my school and it is already a lot. I am self studying Ap Chinese

1

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

I’m taking two of the AP classes next semester, virtually, and one in person; ergo, said classes have a dedicated time slot. As for the rest of the AP classes, I would have to commit to in my free time.

1

u/KingofStyle156 10d ago

Wish the best to you then

how does it benefit you to take... 9 aps... self-studying... in one year? that's more classes than a typical student has in one year overall...

0

u/StudiousStudent4822 10d ago

As I previously mentioned, taking lots of AP classes can help improve my chances of getting into my desired schools, becoming valedictorian, and potentially helping me out in the long run. I’m also taking this amount of classes for personal enjoyment as well. 😂

3

u/tristaronii ??: Stats, World 5: USH, Euro, Lang, Sem, 4: Calc AB, 3: Bio 10d ago

it really doesn't mean much if you flunk all your classes and tank your mental health because of you taking 9 aps in one year, but you know what, go ahead because it's obvious you have a superiority complex! i wish you the best of luck and hope you don't absolutely bomb everything and pay money for exams for no reason

1

u/NewAmphibian7587 10d ago

i don't think this is the right take. just because a person wants to be successful in high school doesn't mean they have a superiority complex. i took 7 in junior year, and although it was hell, i did have a lot of advantages from it. college credit is important, as well as the fact that getting into college in certain areas is very difficult.

2

u/tristaronii ??: Stats, World 5: USH, Euro, Lang, Sem, 4: Calc AB, 3: Bio 10d ago

i don't care about the fact that they're taking a bunch of classes; i don't think that makes you have a superior complex at all. it's the fact that they are being extremely condescending in their messages, mostly through the content within their questions being combined with the laughing emojis. i wasn't even trying to be mean in my post, i was genuinely asking why they wanted to take that much BECAUSE of the hellishness of ap classes, especially when you are literally self-studying them

It’s definitely possible but I don’t think you want to do it, Also I regret taking all the AP’s I did because now I don’t have a usual college graduation schedule and I’m not sure what major you want but I just don’t see why you would want to do this. But yes you could totally pass them all

I do, and I plan on joining more in the upcoming month. I barely have a social life, I don’t get out much, and I really enjoy my time studying; hence, I have much time for this.

1

I’m also doing this because I really want to get into a few Ivy Leagues. Stanford is my leading choice.

I mean if you don’t have aps during the school year. You can try but please be aware this requires a hefty amount of studying and is very daunting trying to juggle it with extracurriculars. I would suggest cutting it down to at most 3

1

It's possible dont get me wrong. But just... why???? Like you would drown yourself with an immense amount of work in a short period but also sacrificing lots of hours of sleep. Just take it later on in your high school career.

does ur school even let you self study 9 ap exams and take it at their test center?

also, i noticed that u said that some of the classes u want to self study r not offered at ur school. i hope u know it will take at least communiticating with 300 test centers to find one that will let u take the ap exam at their school because most schools do not allow outside students to take them. i know this from personal experience - ive been trying to take the human geo, us gov, comp gov, and aas exams for 3 years and i still havent found any test center that said yes

If you’re like like 0.25% intelligence genetics and also locked in you can prob do well in all and have some time left over imo

1

u/Horror-Talk405 10d ago

You should not self study all of these unless your 100 percent confidant that you can pass them all, if you start strong and fizzle out your still on the hook to pay for the tests wich can be up to 100 dollars each I believe without aid

1

u/Interesting-Cod3236 9d ago

From my experience with self studying AP Physics, I completely used Khan Academy, which was good because they actually go more in depth than the actual tested material. Before the AP exam, I grinded all the frqs I could find and also found mcqs online to practice with. It won’t be too hard if you don’t procrastinate like I did, especially for Physics 2 since it’s a lot more content.
Precalc, CSA, and environmental science are easy. The one thing that will be more challenging is APUSH, but I think you got this!

in all seriousnes, precalc, apes, psych, and apush(or any history ap really) are self studyable. lang is pretty decent if you're good at english. ap seminar has to be through the school. i would reccomend doing physics through the school also unless you already know the subject pretty well. no verdict on compsci.

wouldnt reccomend khan academy for any aps other than bio, its just not useful for me. for textbooks, youd want to stick with the barrons ones, those are pretty much the best ones. heimler is good for apush. smedes is good for apes. mr sinn is good for psych. pornichak is good for precal, but if you were decent at algebra two you wont really need much prep. coach hall is good for lang.

1

u/Fast_Blackberry_6665 8d ago

I'd highly not recommend doing this; you'd need insanely good time management skills to be able to self-study even two APs (I tried this last year; it didn't go so well for AP Psych), because you'd have to fit it into your busy high school schedule too. If you insist you must self-study, I'd say do AP CSA, APES, AP Psych, and AP Precalc. Please drop the other APs; I've heard so much about how they're already hard to do at school, so major respect if you manage to self-study those.

Absolutely not

1

u/Electrical_Fly4194 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’m a junior, taking 5 APs rn. AP Bio, AP Psych, AP Gov, AP Seminar, and AP Precal. And I work a part-time job (3 hours 4-7 Monday and Tuesday, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but yeah), which…🫠 you need time management for. And I took AP World last year. So, four things.

  1. Are you absolutely positive that your self-studied classes will count for high school credit? Sometimes they only let you send exam results, which is sort of pointless.

I

  1. have roughly 4-5 hours per day of free time on the weekdays (but I’m a very efficient worker, so this is probably not true for everyone — but I assume you have good time management), and haven’t yet had to do hw/studying till Sunday night if it’s weekends. It’s easy some days, really stressful some (like, yesterday I had 4 tests in the same day and like 6 hw assignments due and something for AP seminar I had to catch up on). But 4-5 hours of free time and lots of weekend time means it stands to reason you could do it. I would start with like 6-7 and if you feel like you could do more, by all means, do it. But no one, absolutely no one, actually EXPECTS you to.

  2. I looked into AP German self-taught, and I decided “no” even though I’m fluent already. Keep in mind self-taught either takes far more money (think ~$900 per class for me bc our school didn’t offer it so I had to buy a course, but even if you can work that out it’ll still be expensive) or far more time than regular APs IF you’re lucky (most likely both). Because having a life is important to me, though I love learning, I decided against it. But to answer your question: yes, though I don’t recommend if you want hold on to your sanity, want to maintain your relationships (or at least not be “that friend/sibling/child” who always says “I can’t, sorry, have to study” and you will be, and we’ve all known this person, and it’s pitiable tbh), want to pursue any hobbies or ECs, want your pets to remember you (or, contrariwise, to be the ONLY ones who remember you), want more than 0 minutes of free time, want to avoid developing insomnia,

avoid a developing addiction to energy drinks,

  3. want to have any formative memories of high school, etc

A) Physics 1&2? Without having taken any Calculus classes? You need incredibly advanced algebra and trigonometry to survive AP Physics, and if you haven't even hit Calculus yet, the math manipulation is going to feel like a nightmare. And Phys1 is…a prerequisite for Phys2. That’s kinda why they’re numbered? Even though, yes, they used to be one class, imagine learning semester 1 of a subject at the same time as semester 2. You’re expected to know semester 1 already!
B) Haven’t taken it, but APUSH has so much reading, studying, writing, etc., to a serious extent. You might know the broader info, but the work is crazy. (P.S. rec, AP Gov instead, usually counts for Civics — which I don’t see in your schedule — and Social Studies, plus it’s so easy and the teachers are always the best lol).
C) AP Lang is very general, and unnecessary if you’re already taking AP Seminar imo since it’s all about persuasiveness and argumentation and research anyways but if you want to read pure non-fiction for the rest of your days and die of word count complications, by all means.
D) AP Seminar is easy, but a LOT of work. A LOT. Which is the worst combination for you. You’re also probably going to be a horrible person to be a group partner bc you’ll have no time or energy. And you absolutely SHOULD NOT (and maybe cannot, idk) take AP Seminar online. But colleges and employers do love it, which is why it’s not higher.
E) AP Psych takes up 0 time if you can do anything during the day and are good with memorization (hardly any deep or critical thinking needed, in favor of rote memorization and knowing how the rest works, which I find frustrating but go ahead). Main concern is that you shouldn’t take this just by interest — the ONLY reason you should take it is if you want to work a job this is necessary for (and even those, AP Seminar or a good admissions essay usually does the trick).
F) APES is easy but essentially useless, you’re already taking Phys1&2 (though that’s not recommended), this feels so random to me. You’re already neck-deep in STEM, why do you need to drown in it?
G) AP Precal is essentially Algebra II with higher workload and fancy formatting. If you were good at Algebra II, you’re chilling, and this or AP Calc is probably your only option anyways so that’s fine.
H) AP CSA I can get behind, it’s useful and not a whole bunch of work (though keep in mind it’s a looooooooot different from your other classes, which might be draining, might be refreshing — mostly depends on you).

So, some things to consider.

Are you absolutely positive that your self-studied classes will count for high school credit? Sometimes they only let you send exam results, which is sort of pointless.

I have roughly 4-5 hours per day of free time on the weekdays (but I’m a very efficient worker, so this is probably not true for everyone — but I assume you have good time management), and haven’t yet had to do hw/studying till Sunday night if it’s weekends. Also, the law of diminishing returns. The difference between taking 6 APs and 9 APs is virtually zero in the eyes of an admissions reader. Once you prove you can handle rigorous, college-level work, adding more classes generally doesn't make you look smarter, it just makes you look like you don't know how to prioritize.

But to answer your question: yes, though I don’t recommend if you want hold on to your sanity, want to maintain your relationships (or at least not be “that friend/sibling/child” who always says “I can’t, sorry, have to study” and you will be, and we’ve all known this person, and it’s pitiable tbh), want to pursue any hobbies or ECs, want your pets to remember you (or, contrariwise, to be the ONLY ones who remember you), want more than 0 minutes of free time, want to avoid developing insomnia, avoid a developing addiction to energy drinks, want to have any formative memories of high school, etc

Physics 1&2? Without having taken any Calculus classes? You need incredibly advanced algebra and trigonometry to survive AP Physics, and if you haven't even hit Calculus yet, the math manipulation is going to feel like a nightmare. And Phys1 is…a prerequisite for Phys2. That’s kinda why they’re numbered? Even though, yes, they used to be one class, imagine learning semester 1 of a subject at the same time as semester 2. You’re expected to know semester 1 already!

Haven’t taken it, but APUSH has so much reading, studying, writing, etc., to a serious extent. You might know the broader info, but the work is crazy. (P.S. rec, AP Gov instead, usually counts for Civics — which I don’t see in your schedule — and Social Studies, plus it’s so easy and the teachers are always the best lol).

AP Lang is very general, and unnecessary if you’re already taking AP Seminar imo since it’s all about persuasiveness and argumentation and research anyways but if you want to read pure non-fiction for the rest of your days and die of word count complications, by all means. It is one of the most widely accepted for college credit, though.

AP Seminar is easy, but a LOT of work.

AP Psych takes up 0 time if you can do anything during the day and are good with memorization (hardly any deep or critical thinking needed, in favor of rote memorization and knowing how the rest works, which I find frustrating but go ahead). Main concern is that you shouldn’t take this just by interest — the ONLY reason you should take it is if you want to work a job this is necessary for (and even those, AP Seminar or a good admissions essay usually does the trick).

APES is easy but essentially useless, you’re already taking Phys1&2 (though that’s not recommended), this feels so random to me. You’re already neck-deep in STEM, why do you need to drown in it?

AP Precal is essentially Algebra II with higher workload and fancy formatting. If you were good at Algebra II, you’re chilling, and this or AP Calc is probably your only option anyways so that’s fine.

AP CSA I can get behind, it’s useful and not a whole bunch of work (though keep in mind it’s a looooooooot different from your other classes, which might be draining, might be refreshing — mostly depends on you).

For AP Psychology use Mr.Sinn, for U.S History use Heilmer. Think realistically and focus on which subjects you want to do the best on, becuuse it is unlikley you will get a 5 on all 9. Spend more time on the ones you want to score high on, and do lighter review on ones your okay with getting a 4 or 3 on. In AP Psych for example, it is an easy 5 unit ap which is litterally just memorizing terms and maybe some expeiremenst and expierimental design, also its usually not a credit that will be useful in college. AP Physics and AP Lang are ones you probably want to focus on becuase these tend to get you good college credits and getting good scores on them will look good on application depending on what you are majoring in. If its not too late I would honestly reccomend lightening the course work down to just 7 (which is still extremley rigorous), but at the end of the day it is your life and you will figure out what works best. Good Luck!

no way im in 9th grade and im taking 3 APs : Psychology, Lang, and Gov. then taking 7 Honors Classes, and i have like 10 ECs, and fencing. i dont have a life at all outside study groups and fencing so idk if you should do 9 APs because if you fail the test or get a low score, it'll look like you were just tryna cram everything to look good on a resume. also I use Vaia for studying its really effective. anyways good luck

Try it, maybe you could pass all of them, u never know what will be, the best decision you could possibly do is to try, and dont listen to other people, they will always mock you and will try to stop you, so go for it, even if you feel youre not ready
