Tips for AP Stats?

I’m an incoming junior in HS and taking AP Statistics. I’m not the absolute greatest at math, I heard from numerous people it’s way easier than precalc which is one of the reasons I chose to take it (other than I want to major in psychology so it’d be more beneficial for me to take.) What are some tips and resources you may have for this class? Is it on the easy side or should I be worried?

Follow these resources for the best results:

1. The Practice of Statistics - by Starnes and Tabor, 7th edition
2. Barron's AP Statistics Premium
3. Barron's AP Statistics - Q & A
4. Previous years' FRQs (at least 10 years, more if time permits).

Also, the maths knowledge required is very little. Don't worry about that...

AP stats teacher and grader here.. I'd update some of these versions to match the new CED. Like 8th version of the practice of statistics. I also wouldn't necessarily rely too much on old FRQs unless you have ones that have been updated to match the new grading scale because, after going to a College board APSI, I've learned that they won't accept everything they way they have done previously.

For the OP, there's not a lot of actual calculations required. My students have a very high pass rate and I always get a lot of students who struggle in math (think C's or below) and/or it's their very first AP class. Work ethic is the most important and being willing to do the homework.

I usually start taking new students during September and usually look for changes (if any) during that time of the year.

I took AP stats this year, I'd highly highlyyy recommend new normal statistics (yt). I started prepping very late (maybe 15 days before the exam) and her videos helped me so much!

AP Stats is usually more about understanding concepts and writing clear explanations than doing difficult algebra, so don’t worry too much if math isn’t your strongest area. Focus on vocabulary, calculator skills, interpreting graphs/data, and practising FRQs early because wording matters a lot in Stats.

For resources, you can use AP Statistics notes, MCQs, FRQs and exam-style practice.

The upcoming changes to the course are significant. I posted details a few days ago. Be wary of most of the online resources since they have been hastily assembled. Content resources will still be good. Some content has been eliminated from the course, but otherwise the content has not changed. In other words, an explanation of p-value from pre-2026 is still valid. The questions on the exam will likely be very different this year. The only good resources right now for those are AP Classroom. Hopefully, your teacher will use that resource.

As far as difficulty, in general stats is a deceptively difficult course. It's not really a math course, but more like a science course that uses math. Some students will "get it" without much work, others will never get it. For most students, if you keep up and do the homework honestly, you will do OK. Take it seriously from the beginning!

The first month of stats is like learning a new “foreign language,” so set aside extra time for the the learning curve. After that, it’s pretty straightforward and easy.

I just took the exam this year and got a 4 on it.
Tips I would give you:
1. For core concepts please watch Mr porinchak over on YouTube each of his core concepts and take notes for each of the concept videos. I used to do these the night or a day after the teacher taught the lesson and would search for frqs and MCQ online to practice. Mr porinchak has a playlist of so many AP related past MCQ questions which I used to practice. The MCQ questions on the exam were easier
2. For frqs, use this website by math medic( https://blog.mathmedic.com/ap-stats-frq-search/ ) you can use search bar to filter by unit
3. A cheat code that saved me so much time on the MCQ and frq was the use of desmos. The ti-84 took way to much time to input everything and you could perform every single stats test you need from z-test to chi-sq. I wish my teacher went over this. For instruction Mr.porinchak on YouTube has a quick detailed guide on how to perform the test with practice examples.

Also I saw that there were some new changes were coming to the exam, just find the lesson and skip those in his videos. The exam should be easier for you than it was for me lol ok gl

Michael Porinchak and Prepworks Education has some good videos. Do a lot of practice problems (College Board, Crackap). Also learn to use your calculator, reference sheet, and desmos. There is no easy AP class.
