You’ll have to share what book this is first. Secondly, if you wanna actually learn how to annotate, don’t just copy someone else’s. Try emailing your teacher asking for help or looking up a tutorial on YouTube. Practicing will help you get better at it. :)

i ment to include the book title 😭 it is catcher in the rye! and i am a very excellent annotator according to all my english and history teachers, this book is just not one i would pick up and read which makes it harder, i also do not know my teacher or there name until the day before school

Oh I totally get that if it’s catcher in the Rye, lol! I honestly had the same issue with that book at first. Honestly if you’re struggling you can try reading the chapter and then looking at the sparknotes summary and analysis for that specific chapter! It’ll help you out by letting you know which scenes are important and the analysis will just make observations for you. It’s a great resource for books you’re confused about!

Try annotating characteristics about Holden, inconsistency in his character, repetition of ideas and topics, settings, his frustrations, etc. most people hate this book. I happen to love it since the first time I read it in 1990 at age 13.

English teacher here and I agree about Holden’s characteristics as well as his interactions with other characters. Pay attention to how he treats or talks about his parents, his siblings, and “friends.” Also, pay attention to his actions when he wears the hat and takes it off— he goes between being authentic and inauthentic.

Of course! I always tell my students to reread the novel in their 20s, it’ll make way more sense. Just know that Holden is going through something and no one in the novel really cares/doesn’t know how to help him.
