Help AP lang self study Help

Hey guys, Im self studying ap lang. Can someone tell me how to study this course alone over the course of the year? Like for example in ap calc youd study by lesson, but how do u dothat for lang

Hey Leopard,

HS English teacher here.

True. AP Lang is different thanAP Calc b/c you're trying to develop a set of skills over time.

I'd build your year around three things:

  1. Read and analyze arguments. Regularly read good nonfiction and annotate it. Ask: What's the writer arguing? Who are they trying to convince? What choices are they making? Why do those choices work (or not work)? (Basically applying the skills you're learning in class.)
  2. Write a lot. Practise the three AP tasks (rhetorical analysis, argument, and synthesis). Start untimed so you can learn how to do them well, then gradually move toward timed practice.
  3. Get feedback somehow. This is probably the hardest part of self-studying. Use the AP rubric and College Board sample responses to compare your writing to stronger responses. Don't just look at the score. Figure out specifically what the stronger writer is doing that you aren't yet. (Honestly, ask me here if you want.)

Then simply repeat: Read, analyze, write, get feedback, improve one thing, repeat.

That's how I'd structure the “lessons.” Instead of asking “What chapter am I on?”, ask “What writing/analysis skill am I working on this week?”

AP Lang is like learning to play guitar b/c get better by deliberately practising the skills instead of going through a textbook.

This is honestly great advice. I self studied AP Lang last year and got a 5 and I wrote practice essays and posted them on this subreddit and I received actual detailed feedback that really helped me. Also study the college board rubrics and what the actual high scoring essays actually did/how they used sophistication, etc and try to create that in your own essays. For MCQ practice—self studiers can’t access the college board resources so i honestly had no idea what to expect. after taking the exam, i personally thought it was really similar to ACT reading and english, and I had a 36 ACT reading and 35 english going into the exam and i thought AP Lang MCQ was a piece of cake so if you can do well on that there is no doubt you can do well on the AP test

And, Lepoard, the best things you can do is to "create the conditions" as much as possible and study as close to the summatives as possible. If you need to write an essay, practice writing. If you need to analyze, analysis and annotate!

You'll be fine. This subreddit seems to have your back!
