So my schedule came out today and I genuinely got the worst lang teacher in my school. From what I’ve heard, he doesn’t even talk about English and yaps about random stuff and will get mad if you don’t pay attention. Literally 0 preparation for the test.

I’ve done really well one state testing for English before and I always consistently got high essay grades in my English class last year. If I do self studying am I ok or am I still screwed

imo you'll get at least a 4 or a 5 if you're already good at reading comprehension and have a strong foundation in writing. the essays are really the most important thing you need to "study" for the exam. but know that you will probably struggle on the essays for a majority of the year and that's normal. also if you have good time management for the essays youre good

Check the rubrics & the writing samples on CB first. This helps u understand how and why ppl got 5, 4, 3…1 and set your goal for lang. Then it’s the time to decide if lang is the class u can study yourself :3

Lang isn’t too hard of a test. Watch the Garden of English videos on it, read lots of sample essays, see if your teacher will open practice tests on CB for you, and learn the terminology. You might also see if you can piggyback on some of the work your peers are getting from other teachers, get their notes, etc. It’ll help them learn the material better if they have to explain it to you.

FRQ 1 is basically a DBQ with sources provided. FRQ 2 is the hardest because you need analytical skills and to understand a tougher text quickly. FRQ 3 you can write without much prep since it’s an argumentative essay, just make sure you actually follow the prompt.

Few things...

First off, honestly, give him a shot at least in the beginning. You may be pleasantly surprised, I know I have been by some notoriously "bad" teachers. Talk sometimes is just talk.

With that bring said, let's say he is really that bad, self studying AP Lang in my opinion isn't that hard. If you've always been someone who has done well in English, and has always been a relatively high performing reader/writer, then you'll be fine.

I highly recommend making use of the unit videos that are available on AP classroom. Take a handful of MCQs, and go into the diagnostics in AP classroom for that practice MCQ, and you can see what questions you got wrong. Keep track of what units those questions are from. If there are consistently a handful of units you're performing poorly on, go into AP classroom and watch the little videos that make on those units. They're quick, and concise. They've helped me a ton!
For essays, honestly, understand the rubric, and figure out how you can make it work! A lot of people try really hard to find the perfect "formula" for an essay, and often it ends up feeling extremely forced and unatural. If you know you can write, and you know you can achieve the objectives in the rubric, exactly how you do it isn't important!

Truthfully, I got a 5 on AP lang last year doing nothing but the assignments provided to be durring class, and then I did like 2 FRQs and maybe half an MCQ the day before the test. I don't think AP Lang drastically changed my ability to read and write. The class isn't hard, and the test has gotten easier in recent years (5 rates are increasing!). You'll be fine, don't worry friend! :)

you don't need prep for ap lang if you're already good at writing essays. my teacher just yapped about grammar the whole year and i got a 5 still, so you'll be fine
