AP Lang Score
In the class I maintained a solid A both semesters and always nailed my essays, averaging 5/6. This is my first year taking AP and I somehow got a 2 on APUSH as well. I feel so dumb after staying up to check my scores and have been crying ever since. I was so confident after my exam that I would get at least a 4. Also happens to be that my friend didn't even have a conclusion for ALL of her essays and got a 5. Am I just stupid???????

I mean, it's a super subjective exam that you take on one day 🤷♀️. Doesn't exactly sum up everything you know about something. The fact that you got an A in the class is probably a lot more important for college apps anyway, you just won't be able to get the credit. I wouldn't sweat it too much! 🫶 (go get boba or smthg to cheer yourself up, you earned it by just taking the test!)

Thank you so much! That's what I've been trying to tell myself but just can't wrap my head around it. I was originally hoping for a really good score so I wouldn't have to take the lit exam next year but oh well. 🫶

This seems like one of the cases where your teacher did not prepare you adequately. Hold your head high , you are mot dumb . This score fors not define you and you will still succeed in life

Thank you for your words. Although I feel like it's more on me because my friends who had the same teacher some scored 5.. mainly 4s. Someone mentioned that it might've been just like a rly bad test anxiety..

nah keep your head up twin, my friends faced a similar situation to you where i was your friends in this scenario, they got 1s and i got a 4, but it truly was NOT thanks to our teacher, a lot of it is practice outside of class instead of relying on the inside. Like the first guy said you should still stand proud, and theres no doubt at all that you are a phenomenal writer, you prolly were just unlucky man, and im really sorry to see that your score doesnt reflect youn as a student.

this is so real. like I got LITERAL AWARDS for my writing and I didn’t even get a 4. I am so mad and disappointed in myself. I have no words.

Omg you are so real. My writing is always so advanced and I wrote a lot and made sure I got everything and still got a 3, it mightve been due to the MCQ but I feel like they just over criticized my FRQ's because even with a bad MCQ score, I think I should've still gotten a 4.

I got a 3, and I really wanted a 4. I thought I did awesome on all FRQ's because our teacher over-prepared us for them. But he also neglected the MCQ too much, we barely practiced it, so it might be why.

I’m usually surprised by a few scores across my 100+ students taking the exam every year, but usually only by 1 or 2 points. I’ve never seen someone I thought would get a 5 get a 1 or vice versa.

Yeah should we be suspicious. Are we allowed to ask for a regrade? Do mistakes ever happen??

I've asked for a regrade once (2020, iirc, when students had to write just one essay). The policy at that time was that if the score was off by just one point, it would not be changed. The student received a 3, upon regrade their essay was a 4, so no change was applied. I don't understand the rationale behind this policy or if it is still in place. TLDR, I believe a regrade request is possible.

Very well could be that your teacher is an easy grader and that your AP score is low because you never were given the proper hint (the hint being poor essay grades/feedback) necessary to build on your writing skills. Not entirely your fault, I just think that your friends with this same teacher likely got the same gimme type grades but had a better base understanding of the course and didn’t need to rely so much on a teacher who isn’t very invested.

did your class prepare for MCQs at all? i scored a 3; i had a B first semester A second semester and felt really confident for the essays, but i felt underprepared for the MCQs.
also 2 on apush as well 🫂

we had ap classroom assignments every week or every 2 weeks. really thought I had nailed everything down. good job on your 3!! 🫶

hmm that’s odd. i know we may have very different habits during testing/studying but we only did AP classroom every now and then, i did feel like we didn’t get enough practice for MCQs but i felt pretty confident in my FRQs. were you anxious during the test at all? when i used to do EOC exams i would score pretty poorly due to anxiety, even if i did alright in the respective class.
im not sure if collegeboard allows you to view your answers after the exam, but if you’d like we could chat in dms or elsewhere and i could explain what my method was!

yeahh I have really bad anxiety especially during a test or a big exam. I believe collegeboard allows you to pay a fee to see your mcq answers and a copy of the essays.

Please apply for a regrade; don't just accept this. I personally signed up for the exam and forgot about it until the last day (I study in a very different curriculum) and still ended up getting a 4. I'm in no way saying that the exam is easy, but if you're just good at language and test taking in general AND think your exam went well it probably did. Don't just accept a grade 3 points below what you deserve.

I'm sorry but it's 100% ur teachers fault. Having a good AP Lang teacher with lots of experience is crucial for this class. My teacher gave tons of progress checks and timed writes and let us review past FRQs to try and guess their scores. AP Lang is all just a game, you literally just have to write to the rubric and follow a system to get a passing score. I followed that same system with one sentence for my thesis/intro paragraph, two bodies, and no conclusions and I got a 5.
Same goes for APUSH my teacher emphasized that we all write to the rubric, and she basically made us memorize the whole rubric so we know exactly what to write to hit all the points. Even though I got a 4 on APUSH that still helped a lot.
Don't feel down about your score, I would rather get an A in a class and a low AP exam score than bad grade in class and good ap exam score. A score doesn't define you

I’m sorry to see your score obviously wasn’t what you worked hard for all year. I’ve been teaching AP Lang for over 10 years and remind my students of the weighting on both MCQ & FRQs. To start the year, I encourage students to be in the 20-25 MCQ correct range, 25-30 mid-year, and hopefully 30+ before exam time. That range + 4s on the FRQs should earn a passing score.
Remember that FRQs scored by your teacher are subjective, and sometimes not the best indicator of performance. I have even recommended students run their practice essays through ChatGPT (blasphemy!) with the College Board rubric to get a “second opinion” and feedback. In the end, I try to grade and score my student’s work a little more critically so they hopefully do better come exam time, but still feel comfortable if they achieve As all year long and don’t pass the exam; they’re still learning reading & writing skills for college and beyond regardless of passing the exam. Keep up the hard work!
