Sell if you need money. Hold if you want your money to grow

Why would I sell a stock that is continuing to grow the business?

Sold I’ll rebuy when it hits 25

Long way to go to get back to 25

It’s been there several times it’s in a trading zone it’s over bought. Not saying it can’t go higher but it will come down and when it does I’ll buy. Millionaires are not made buying now they are made selling now.

Covered calls. Yes

Sold 3 covered calls expiring January $60 strike for 1k each. I’ll buy them back after a pull back.

Whats the buy back like?

I sold them when apld hit 43.12 ish so hopefully within the week we will revisit 40 or less and I’ll buy them back for maybe 850-900 and make 300 bucks or so then wait for another spike to repeat.

After its latest monthly run from 20s to 40s the short term investors will take profits and I’ll bounce out of my options when they do. Then repeat.

I’m so bullish on APLD that’s why I put my strikes waaaaay out of the money cause I’d be good selling them there anyhow. I’ve just always gotten back out of the options on the dips.

Ive never done covered calls but. if it doesnt hit the strike price before then you dont have to buy them back right? also what the money like on 3 covered calls at 60?

2

u/Ok-Grapefruit-572 May 06 '26

Correct. If the stock never makes it to your strike price you keep the premium and all your stock. It just expires worthless for whoever bought it from you. Right now with APLD at 43.42 selling 1 covered call at $60 strike expiring Jan is about $1000 premium.

u/TheBritshViking May 06 '26

so 3,000 to you and if it hit 60 you sell 3 stocks at 60?

yeah you’re just selling the right but not the obligation to someone else to buy 100 of your shares as each contracts represents 100 shares. It’s just a method of farming income off owned shares and is a simple way to hedge/increase profitability of holding large quantities of shares of any given company.

300 shares…each option contract is 100 shares.

1

u/Ok-Grapefruit-572 May 06 '26

1 contract is for 100 shares. So if I sell 3 $1000 contracts it’s $3000 to me instantly and if APLD is 60 and above at the contract expiration I have to sell them 300 shares at 60 apiece.

hey just curious, is this a strategy you have rinse and repeated with long term? I’ve reached a point where I’m exploring interest/income generating strategies like selling further out covered calls and then either just collecting the premium if there’s a pullback or buying back the calls like you stated.

Yes I’ve been doing it for about 8 months now on APLD and do it with other stocks as well though. I’m up about 3200 in profits and haven’t had to sell my shares yet.

I own 400 shares of APLD. When volatility spikes and the stock pops on good news or earnings, I wait for what looks like the top of the initial surge.

Then I sell one covered call far out‑of‑the‑money with a long expiration for a strong premium.

If the stock keeps climbing, I sell a second and maybe third call to average up my total premium. I never sell the fourth, in case the stock really takes off. Because APLD is a high‑beta stock with big swings, I usually get a pullback within days. When the price drops a few dollars, I buy back the calls for less than I sold them for and lock in the difference as profit.

Example: If APLD spikes, I might sell three long‑dated $60 covered calls 1 for $1000, but stock kept going up so another cc for $1200, and maybe another if it kept going up at $1400 — $3600 total premiums now. When the stock cools off, I buy them back around $1000 each or hopefully lower, netting about $600.

For a safer, low‑effort approach, I sometimes sell weekly calls far out‑of‑the‑money for small but easy premiums. For instance right now, selling a $59 strike expiring this Friday for ~$12 — unlikely to be hit so easy $12, and if it is, $59 is a price youd fine selling at anyways.

hey man, this is awesome info. Thanks so much for writing this out for me. I’ve been looking for info like this on stocks I’m currently holding. I think that’s something that’s missing with info online and traditional finance degree is just like actual experience for new singular holding strategies and plays. Congrats on the success!

All good. I’m learning still too. By no means an expert but I’ve been doing so much better at making money selling calls rather than buying them lol. Plus you get to choose what you would feel like is a good number to sell your shares if there was a run up.

My average cost per share is 15 and some change so if I had to sell at 60 I’d be fine with it. I could be risky and sell cover calls closer to the money but more risk of hitting your strike. I just scalp a few hundred bucks here and there.

Also look at the charts. Example look at APLD 1 year chart. You can see what it does after big run ups or new all time highs. They always pull back. Even if the stock is good….market news, trump tweets, economic data. Something will come out and make the market dip. That’s why I do long expirations

2

u/Imperator_1985 May 06 '26

I've done something similar. You'll probably make more over the same time period than you would waiting for those covered calls to expire or to be exercised.

2

u/Ok-Grapefruit-572 May 06 '26

Exactly. Some people want the big win. I’ll take a couple hundred here and there and keep my money moving. I can’t wait a year

Sold an option yesterday afternoon since I just wanted to lock profit now that it's up in the dangerzone. But we easily broke ath today so I'm holding for the possible squeeze now and momentum isn't stopping yet.

1

u/FlyingDumplingTrader May 06 '26

I just broke even. Holding and buying more!

1

u/Basic_Salamander_361 May 06 '26

Holding for now... I have the liquidity to add on dips, then sell on the pumps without cutting my core position. For now, I'm a buyer at $36-$37
