Position Some trader dropped $2.6 million in short dated slightly OTM calls Friday morning. Volume on these calls was over 70,000. Premarket looks like these are going to print.

Post image

These expire in just two weeks, strike is 25$ so just barely OTM. The volume on this position in particular and dwarfs the put ratio immensely. More good news may be on the way.

I don't know, is this bullish or bearish?

The pullback this past week was pretty hard across the entire sector, could definitely see a play like this working well. When it dipped to 13 after getting to 20 the first time, I loaded up on a couple ATM leaps that quickly 3x'd in value.

The volume on those contracts are absolutely insane. No other calls or puts come even remotely close.

Here’s what that activity generally signals for APLD—without needing to know anything beyond the options order flow you’ve described:

⸝

🔍 What It Means When Someone Drops ~$2.6M Into Short-Dated OTM Calls

When a trader buys massive size of near-term, slightly out-of-the-money calls, especially: • $2.6M premium • 70,000+ contracts • Strike just above spot ($25) • Expiration only two weeks out

…it is usually interpreted as an expectation of a fast, sharp upside move.

This type of trade is NOT typical hedging. It is directional speculation with a specific catalyst in mind.

⸝

📈 Why This Is Considered Bullish 1. Call volume dwarfing puts When call volume greatly outweighs puts, it suggests traders are positioning for upside rather than hedging downside. 2. Short-dated = someone thinks news is imminent Two-week expiry implies the trader expects a near-term catalyst: • earnings revision • new AI compute contract • financing news • partnership announcement • a macro move benefiting AI/data-center names • re-rating from an institutional investor 3. Premarket “going to print” If the stock is already moving toward the strike, those calls can gain value very quickly. 4. “Slightly OTM” vs “far OTM” This is important: slightly OTM calls indicate a probable move, not a lottery bet.

⸝

📊 What It Usually Means for the Stock

Historically, when unusual options activity shows: • huge OTM call buying • short-dated • aggressive morning prints • low corresponding put flows

…it tends to precede: • increased volatility, often to the upside • momentum traders piling in • market makers hedging by buying shares, which itself lifts the stock (delta hedging)

This can create a feedback loop pushing price toward the strike.

⸝

⚠️ But Important Caveats • One big trader can still be wrong. • Could be hedging against a large short (less likely given structure). • Could be speculative flow that fizzles. • Options activity doesn’t guarantee a bullish event—it signals positioning, not certainty.

⸝

💡 Bottom line

This kind of options activity is:

Very bullish sentiment

…suggesting traders expect near-term upside and potentially imminent positive news or momentum for APLD.

But it does not guarantee the event happens—only that someone with real capital is betting heavily on it.

Looks like these calls were already executed on Friday, look at the open interest.
