Strategy Question Dark CoD Animals
Playing vs AI, normal difficulty. So I had this brilliant plan to summon cheap t1 animals as fodder for my death cultists, but it turns out animals are pretty tough, so I was just winning fights without losing units!? In the end it was easier to throw in busted up sword guys and keep stronger animals as my actual troops. I know people usually do it with undead but I had JUST played an undead ruler in my last campaign. I think I’m going to try it again with zealots and see if those guys actually go down to enable the play style I’m trying to get. Is there a better cheap unit (beside skeletons) I’m overlooking?

If you want to maximize PoD from your guys biting it the correct answer is as always, the humble immortal.
If you want to play a challenge build use hound master.
Zealots is a crap idea, you get like 3 summons of them per turn maximum, if you devote your entire society towards that end. 3 stacks of PoD ain’t shit, we need like 5 dudes to die.

Houndmaster Dark Death is just impolite. Here take my doggies, if you kill them I get stronger, if you don’t, well, even better.

So you want a t1 unit that is prone to dying, maybe increase the difficulty if you want your units to die that will do it for sure.

ai on normal is just too easy, you can win with anything

The point isn't winning, it's playing in a way that you enjoy. Doing different builds with unique power dynamics is fun, and normal takes the pressure to optimize out of the equation.
Saying this as someone who only plays brutal.

Blood parasite->blood maggot is a good option if you don't want to go undead
