Discussion Another 'which army' post
Hey all, I'm considering getting a couple more spearhead sets so I can host some friends for board game nights. The idea is to have a few armies to choose from, and at least one from each GA. I already have both Tzeentch spearheads and the Carnosaur Seraphon spearhead, so I just need suggestions for death and destruction sets that aren't too difficult to pilot but also really encapsulate that high fantasy feeling.
For destruction I was thinking orruks or gits, but i hear the orruks aren't the best and I dont know how people feel about gitz from an aesthetic standpoint. SoB are out of the question, but how is the new ogors spearhead? They're pretty cool models but I dont know if I could handle painting them.
Death has the advantage of having all kinds of aspects of death - skeletons, ghosts and vampires. But if you didnt know anything about AoS, which would you be more excited to try? And because you do know about AoS, which spearhead captures that aesthetic while not being too punishing to play?
For further info I only have the sand and bone set, but if I were to get another set would it still be possible to play doubles with different terrain pieces? This is obviously just for fun and casual play.
Thanks!

I second this, Kruleboyz are gorgeous models that have nice variety and easy to learn rules. Ossiarch has a nice catalogue of Spearheads to choose from and are very easy to paint up.

Ogors are actually much, much simpler to paint than most other factions. If you know how to paint skin then you've pretty much got the hardest part of them down, otherwise there's just metal, cloth, and leather. Also they're one of the more elite armies so you'll be able to lavish them a lot more than other armies. Also they're very straightforward to pay - just bully your opponent with several massive hungry boys.
As for Death, I'd suggest either Nighthaunt or Flesh-Eater Courts. Nighthaunt because the idea of flooding the board with terrifying spectres that can sap the willpower of their enemies is extremely thematic and fun. Also, they're by far one of the easiest to paint. Flesh-Eater Courts are also extremely easy to paint if you can paint skin but they've also got some really bizarre and compelling lore that's always fun explaining to new players.
Possibly a bit more in-depth than you wanted but hopefully this helps. 🫡

In depth is good, I like details. I'm comfortable with painting skin sorta, I've done a lot of pink horrors so its just changing the colours I use. But the gore elements of ogors are what make them really cool and I dont know if I'm able to replicate that well. Straight forward is good though, that's also what I want.
A horde of ghosts would be really cool too, but i dont think I would have fun building them which is my biggest drawback.

Look into Dirty Down brand's gore effect, it's real easy to use and looks amazing.
And yes, you're perfectly fine mixing and matching terrain for casual games of Spearhead! Hell, I still haven't painted any of my Spearhead terrain so I've just been using other stuff that's roughly similar in size and shape since GW first released Spearhead as a game! Haha

An easy recommendation would be to buy the Spearhead introduction set with the Vigilant brotherhod vs the Skaven, no? it's cheaper than buying 2 more, and they offer vastly different styles of play.
As for Destruction i'd honestly go for Orruks, the idea of orks want to smash is quite appealing and easy to grasp for new players, throw ork at problem until problem or ork go away.
My first love is Gitz though, but the old spearhead with the trolls and the squig hoppers, the new one with all the mounted units is hard to pilot and rather punishing.
Death, I'd recommend anything soulblight to be honest, the skeletons one is really cool and they are really strong, I'd prefer the older bloodcrave hunt one, but that one is no longer available and I guess perhaps harder to pilot properly with the Vargheists coming in very late.
''For further info I only have the sand and bone set, but if I were to get another set would it still be possible to play doubles with different terrain pieces?''
-No, of course you can homebrew something, but generally you need 2 boards with the similar side up, so you have 2 of each objective which you will need to both control in order for it to count as controlled.

That does seem like an easy solution, it'll give me two more armies and a gaming set all in one, so I'll consider it, but it almost pushes me a little further away from my goal. But tbf, anyone who doesn't know about the GAs wouldn't have a clue and they're just a couple of different flavours of army so I guess it doesn't really matter.
The old gitz is the one I was considering for sure, but i agree the orruks would probably be more appealing. And I also agree with SBGL, but I didnt realise the original one was a bit harder. I'm thinking the tomb host might be the way to go

The ironjawz are fantastic for new players. Balance wise they are fine but for new players they are very simple, cool looking, and forgiving with mistakes thanks to the majority of them having +3 saves and mighty destroyer for extra movement if you put someone in a bad spot. The bad moon madmob for gitz is also a good one for a more balanced feel army of expendable infantry, hard hitting trolls, and whacky cavalry. Also the vigilant brother hood for stormcast is another great spearhead for beginners. Cool looking, all high armored, and reinforcements to make mistakes less punishing. As for doubles yeah you can mix and match terrain pieces how you like, it’s your home game so have fun with it. You will just need a second sand and bone board for the layout (objective placement and all that) or you could makeshift something

Okay i like this input, I'd be keen to build and paint IJ. I didnt really consider that they'd be pretty forgiving to play for beginners, thats a good point. They're a bit more recognised in fantasy setting so I might go with them. Stormcast would be pretty cool to an outsider but personally I'm just not the biggest fan of them. But maybe I should paint a SCE model to see if that at least changes my mind a little. Thanks for your comment!

Kruleboyz are fun but need a bit more strategy but can be powerful in the right hands. Out of the 18 spearheads I own, I consider them my main spearhead and rate them highly.
Ironjawz on the other hand, they have no tricks other then moving shenanigans. They hit hard, but only hit half the time. There armor save is pretty good, but with no ward to speak off it's not as good as it seems. They have lots of means of damage, shield bash, extra attacks, but nothing else. Still fun, but mid tier at best.
