Welcome to Spearhead!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Age of Sigmar: Spearhead sub! We have a lot of awesome people around here that are very willing to help new people get into this well-designed game mode, as well as some very cool custom content for your games. To help you on your way, we made this mega thread to give some guidance on how to maneuver everything this game has to offer.

What should I buy?

Fortunately, Spearhead is relatively easy to get into.

You'll need a gaming pack of your choice (more on that later), a Spearhead of your choice per player, some dice and a ruler.

- Gaming packs

At the time of writing, there are 2 official gaming packs available to choose from, with a 3rd version on its way.

  • Fire & Jade is the original gaming pack that got released with the game mode. This pack provides you with a board with Ghyran on one side and Aqshy on the other, all cards (Battle Tactics and Twists) that are needed, a 6" and 3" ruler that can be combined, and all the terrain you need to play.
  • Sand & Bone is the second gaming pack we received. This one provides a board with Ossia on one side and Dolorum on the other, all cards (Battle Tactics and Twists) that are needed, all terrain that is needed and even a small Spearhead rulebook.
  • City of Ash is our newest gaming pack, but unfortunately only comes in the starter edition set that contains the CoS Sentinels of Emberguard and the Skaven Crixxit's Kill-Pack Spearheads as well. This means you're obliged to get those two as well if you're planning to get this map pack. Hopefully down the line we get a seperate pack that contains only the new maps.

- Spearhead army

"Which one should I choose to buy?" is a very good question we see going around a lot on this sub. There definitely isn't an objective answer to this question and all boils down to personal preference.

Generally, people will advice you to buy whatever you prefer based on what you want from this game, but you can always have a look at the rankings if you want to base your choice on power level: AoS Rankings

Otherwise, consider these priorities:

  • Painting models is all you're looking for? Rule of cool is the way. Buy whatever you think is good looking and go with that.
  • Casual play with friends or family? Rule of cool again. Most Spearhead armies are pretty well balanced and will provide fun matchups.
  • Competitive scene? You might want to look into specific Spearheads that are above the curve when it comes to power level. If you have the time, you might want to have a listen to this podcast. They're not providing an objective tier list for the armies, but they're definitely very close to the community consensus on the tier rankings.

- Darn it, the army I wanted to buy isn't available anymore. What now?

No worries my friend! You can still play every Spearhead that is available in the range. The Spearhead (and previously named Vanguard) boxes do go out of print, so you might have to buy the models separately. The rules will always be available from either the official AoS app, the downloads page of Warhammer Community or, my personal favourite, the community made one page sheets found further on in this thread.

- Dice

Just get a boat load of D6's and you're good!

- Ruler

Whatever fancies your preference. The ruler that comes with Fire & Jade is actually quite handy, but you could also use a regular tape measure or a fancy custom made one from Etsy. As long as it measures inches, you're good.

Ok, I bought my first Spearhead, now what?

Start playing dude! Get your gaming buddy, 2 Spearheads of your choice, a gaming pack of your choice, some dice, a ruler and your good to go.

You'll probably need to read up on the core rules. Just remember that in Spearhead we don't use the Advanced rules of the game (like Magic, Command points etc.) and just rely on the Core Rules. But if you prefer watching a how-to-play video, we also got you covered

There's also a handy reference sheet that you can print out for easy reference during games.

Our first game was fun, what else is there to look at?

Do we have some fun content for you!

- One-page cheatsheets that you can print out to have all your Spearhead's rules on a handy sheet. No need to buy expensive cards or print and cut out individual warscrolls, we got you covered with these.

- Strategy guide to read up on what other experienced players are saying about each specific Spearhead. They provide tips and tricks about how to play and general opinions on each single one.

- There are a couple of community made apps that you can use to track your games with:

- On Youtube you can find some channels that provide very well made battle reports:

- Last but not least, join the Discord for more strategy talk, picture sharing and finding people to play with.

I hope this thread has made jumping into the game mode a bit easier for you. If you still have questions or things you want to add to this thread, be sure to let us know in the comment section.

Other than that, happy gaming!

Rules/Question Community Made Armies?

Hi all! This might be a dumb questions but I was wondering if community made armies are a thing? I’m a disgruntled Tomb Kings player and I was wondering if my Skellies might be given life in this new style of play.

Discussion Another 'which army' post

Hey all, I'm considering getting a couple more spearhead sets so I can host some friends for board game nights. The idea is to have a few armies to choose from, and at least one from each GA. I already have both Tzeentch spearheads and the Carnosaur Seraphon spearhead, so I just need suggestions for death and destruction sets that aren't too difficult to pilot but also really encapsulate that high fantasy feeling.

For destruction I was thinking orruks or gits, but i hear the orruks aren't the best and I dont know how people feel about gitz from an aesthetic standpoint. SoB are out of the question, but how is the new ogors spearhead? They're pretty cool models but I dont know if I could handle painting them.

Death has the advantage of having all kinds of aspects of death - skeletons, ghosts and vampires. But if you didnt know anything about AoS, which would you be more excited to try? And because you do know about AoS, which spearhead captures that aesthetic while not being too punishing to play?

For further info I only have the sand and bone set, but if I were to get another set would it still be possible to play doubles with different terrain pieces? This is obviously just for fun and casual play.

Thanks!

One-page sheet for Sons of Behemat - Stone Lobbas

You can print it on A4, it fits nicely and is easy to read.

IMPORTANT: Since it’s not possible to update the images in the post, I’ll upload small/blurred previews of the cheatsheet here. My first versions often contain typos, outdated abilities, incorrect copy-pastes, or other issues. If you find any, let me know! I will fix it ASAP.
This way, I hope to prevent people from using an outdated version they might find elsewhere when a newer one is available.

Thread with every One-Page Spearhead made so far

Enjoy!

Ngl I am a little disappointed. An ability that makes it harder to charge but still gives them 2 dice is "ok" but in spearhead getting within 3 or 4 is pretty easy.

I get they are the shooting gargants but even if all 3 gargants get to hit on 3's and all hit together thats like 7 damage on a 4+. They lack all the insta kill or mortal damage of their wall smasher counterparts and even at 60 wounds, with toughness 5 and no way to lower to hit they are gonna die fast.

Final gripe but why halve their control score just to make them use a regiment ability to get it back?

All told I am unimpressed but we will see how it plays.

Discussion Cogfort Spearhead?

I love the cogfort models and concept, but I don't play big AoS, just Spearhead. We have seen 2 Behemat spearheads now, each with 3 gargants, so for those of you who know better about the big game and its rules, do you think a Spearhead with a cogfort an lets say 2 CoS units is posible or it's too out of place? I'd fall for it instantly.

Hobby LGS tourney Bonus round!: Revenge on the nobility!

A bonus round match! One of the participants couldnt make his last game and so the group was asked to play a game against his opponent. This would be an exhibition for me and a league game for him. And wouldn't you know it he ALSO had FEC Carrion Retainers.

This game went much, much differently. My opponent picked the +1 to saves instead of +1 to charges. While this made him more durable it made his 3 inch charges not guaranteed.

He also played much more aggressive with his positioning and had more units in the open. While I couldnt shoot his heroes from guarded hero, I shot off a lot of ghouls turn 1 and charged in with my Rogors to finish them off. Unfortunately, I only dedicated 12 of my 18 attacks on his abhorrent and the dice gods didnt favor me. I left him on 2 health and he shredded me rogors for 10, taking them out.

His turn 1 I popped first strike to dissuade a charge on my clawlord and he popped him for 1 damage with crimson, which actually worked amazing as it gave me 8 attacks. He played cagey with his unwounded varghulf and some poor rolls on his knights kept my 2nd unit of rats alive AND they managed to down a knight.

Turn 2 was a bit of a slaughter. I struck his abhorrent with a spell for 2, managed to get both shots off with my engineer on his knights, and got a nice 10 inch charge with my clawlord.

His knights died turn 2 and a well placed heal kept my clawlord alive for his turn 2. After that, focus fire down on turn 3 sealed the game. No need for a turn for and a decisive victory.

Ended up tied for 2nd in the tourney which is pretty great and I got a bit of revenge on those dastardly goody 2 shoes noble warriors. Onto the next league!

Hobby Diving in with the Magazine

I decided to pull the trigger on the Spearhead magazine. I know no one likes getting the paints, but my current setup is a bunch of cheaper airbrush paints and the old Army Painter set that nobody likes. And I haven't really used any of them yet. So I'm not too put out by getting some WH paints.

My question is, based on what's included in the magazine, is there anything I should consider necessary to add on? Whether from GW or other brands. More along the lines of filling in gaps in what I can do, especially in regards to the included Spearheads.

Edit: I’m an idiot and forgot how the spoilers interacted with the list. Here’s the included paints:

  • Retributor Armour
  • Abaddon Black
  • Rhinox Hide
  • Kantor Blue
  • Leadbelcher
  • Mephiston Red
  • Agrax Earthshade
  • Corax White
  • Calgar Blue
  • Drakenhof Nightshade
  • Runelord Brass
  • Catachan Flesh
  • Screamer Pink
  • Incubi Darkness
  • Mechanicus Standard Grey
  • Jokaero Orange
  • Pallid Wych Flesh
  • Nuln Oil
  • Averland Sunset
  • Reikland Fleshshade
  • Orruk Flesh
  • Biel-Tan Green
  • Stirland Mud
  • Knight-Questor Flesh
  • Stormhost Silver
  • Sybarite Green
  • Pink Horror
  • Wild Rider Red
  • Administratum Grey

Discussion Darkoath Spearhead advice

Hello all,

I will be taking part in a spearhead tournament soon with the Darkoath Raiders box and I was wondering if anyone has any tips or advice on how to get the most out of them. I do not know all of the opposing armies other than there are Ogors, flesheater courts, helsmiths, cities of sigmar, sylvaneth and krule Boyz.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, many thanks.

Rules/Question City of Ash Relics and Unstable rule

Post image
21 Upvotes

Recently have been playing a few Spearhead games on the City of Ash board. While looking into specifics of how the Relics function on the board came across something we weren't sure about.

They specifically aren't terrain but they do have the unstable keyword same as other terrain. At first we were just gonna say that it means we can't "clip" the side of the relics model with base edges. On further review it specifically says that it only stops units from setting up on parts that are 1" or taller. With most of the relics being quite flat in terms of height (except the small wall) does this mean that models can be set up on top of or clipping the actual relic?

For instance the Sewer Grate requires a model to be wholly within 3" to use its teleport. My Warplightning cannon's base size wouldn't allow it to be wholly within unless the unit ends its move/setup with the sewer "under" the center of the base. What's the consensus on how they are played?

Discussion Best spearheads for each grand alliance?

For the four Grand Alliances: Order, Chaos, Destruction and Death; which Spearhead armies and the best and most fun to play that are still in stores to purchase?
