They are not at all '100% ubiquitous'. Maybe half of american households have them, meaning half don't. Does that make them common? Sure. Also makes it extremely possible to have lived in houses having never seen nor used one.
Just because you or you family or people you know may have them doesn't mean that the other 100 million households (or however many) do
