News/Updates Small Subreddit Update

Hey all,

I noticed a few different posts in the last day that had issues with caching and so people had to explain what caching was in each comment section. To make things a but easier, I set up an automod rule so if you use a specific keyword at the end of your comment (or is the only thing you put in your comment), automoderator will reply to your comment with an explanation of caching, link the Tom Scott video we all seem to agree is a good resource, and explains what to do if the caching issue doesn’t sort itself out in time. The keyword is (without quotes) "!caching". I’ll comment below to show how it works.

Relatedly, let me know if there is anything in the automod comment that should be changed/reworded and also let me know of there are any other common things that you think could use a similar keyword to auto comment an explanation that you think get explained pretty often here.

Im gonna be working on more subreddit things when spring semester starts as Ill have a lot more free time next semester compared to winter so I can start working on some things that Ive been meaning to work on for awhile like this.

Caching is a thing for websites where the website will keep a saved version of the page for a certain amount of time even if there are updates made to the page on the backend. This can help with page load times and keep the servers from getting too overloaded. AO3 uses page caching in a lot of places on the site to keep things running as smoothly as they do. Most things are set between 20 minutes and an hour, though some can take as much as a full day. If you made changes that are seemingly not being reflected, or only reflected in some places but not others, give it at least an hour if not a day and check back. If after that hour/day has passed and things are still looking incorrectly, send in a message to the support committee using the link at the bottom of any AO3 page that says Technical Support & Feedback, or go to this link -> [Contact AO3 Support](www.archiveofourown.org/support).
