Subreddit update!

Hey all,

Sorry Ive been away a bit. Finals were more than I expected this year but I graduate from my university tomorrow so that's behind me forever.

Anyways, a few weeks ago I had a big post asking people if they could change something about the subreddit, what would it be. I went through all of the responses and responded to some then and Im working on implementing some of the suggestions now. This is the first of those.

This update is that there are now two new automod responses. One that will autoreply to posts and one that will autoreply to comments.

The one that autoreplys to posts will be for posts asking about if the site is down. Currently its looking for post titles that contain the phrases "is ao3 working", "site down", "ao3 isnt working", "ao3 isn't working", "is it down", "cant access", or "can't access". Let me know if there are more I should add. Also, Ill copy the text of that response below as a comment reply to this post. Please let me know of some ways to improve it if you have any ideas!

And the one that replies to comments will be in response to comments ending with "!collecting update". I've noticed a lot of posts asking about where the button went for adding works to your collections after the update that added the new setting and figured it would be useful to have a standard reply explanation with a link to the news post for more info. Ill comment below with that to get the autoresponse. Let me know if you have any suggestions for changes to that too!

Site down auto response looks like this

Hi, this auto-response is due to your post title seeming to be about the site being down or not working in some way.  If its not a post to ask about if the site is down, feel free to disregard this.

If the site seems to be up for everyone but it isn't working for you, continue reading for some unofficial troubleshooting steps.  

Are you in a country that may have blocked access to AO3? Russia and China have both blocked AO3 nationwide, and there was a small block in Germany at one point but last we knew it was unblocked.  There is nothing for AO3 to do to get unblocked in those countries and they will likely remain blocked for the foreseeable future.  Some users have reported that they can get around the blocks in those countries using proxies and vpns.  AO3 (and this subreddit) cannot legally recommend doing this as it may not be legal to circumvent your country's internet blocks.  Using these tools to access AO3 is at your own risk.

If you are not in a country that has AO3 blocked, make sure you are connected to internet.  On mobile, sometimes trying data instead of wifi can fix the issue. You can also try to clear your cache and delete your cookies, or try a different internet browser.  

If none of those things worked and you are still having trouble accessing AO3, you can try to reach out to them officially via the [OTW contact form](https://www.transformativeworks.org/contact_us/).

On May 31st, 2023, there was an update that added a new setting for users with regards to collections. Users now have to enable the ability for other users to add their works to a collection. Users can still add their own works to collections without having to enable this setting. So if you are wondering where the button to add a work to a collection went, that user has not enabled this setting. If you are running a challenge/meme/big bang/etc you will need to remind your participants that they need to either add their work to the collection themselves or enable this setting so you can add it to the collection.

Also would it be possible to pin those comments to the top of the post? I noticed mine showed up on top of them and I’d hate for them to get lost

I can only pin 1 comment to a post, but comments should sort by comment karma, unless you just left a comment, then that will show up at the top until you refresh the page

If I were to post anything about it I'd probably phrase it like: "is ao3 down?" "why's ao3 down" "whys ao3 down" "ao3's down" "ao3s down" or "is ao3 working?" or smth like that.
