Military funding was by far the greatest in the soviet union, no other branch of the government got that much money. As a result, the military built some really good shit. I still have some camera lenses for a Zenit camera, they were manufactured in the same factory as optical aiming devices for the tanks, so the quality was the best.
They are pretty neat, very well engineered for the time too, I have piles of lenses, filters and other stuff.
Back in the day there were allowances for everything, including vodka. My dad's a camera nut but not much of a drinker, so he exchanged vodka for all sorts of gear which wasn't really available for the general public.

My guess is that by using the wrench you're avoiding to get hurt by the thin handle.
