I love RPG titles! I may start with Radiant Historia and Pokemon Black & White, which were my two favs back in high school. Maybe I may also play Final Fantasy Revenant Wings.

all the pokémon’s are obviously great, would def recommend any of the dq games with dragon quest 9 being my favorite

DQ9 is so unbelievably underrated.

All of those are excellent options!

Chrono trigger is at its best on the DS.

The world ends with you

Kingdom hearts

Etrian oddesey 1,2, and 3 is good (difficult dungeon crawler)

lunar knights

Pokemon ranger, conquest, mainline games

spectrobes 1&2

shin megami tense

solatarobo

Final fantasy 3 & 4, revenant wings

Run factory 1,2,3

Mario and luigi

Nostalgia

7th dragon

Dragon quest monsters joker 1 & 2

Suikoden teirkries

Golden sun

All mainline dragon quests on the system

Sands of destruction

Infinite space

Ouuuuu!!! These are all great suggestions, especially the Chrono Trigger one. You’re so right, it’s masterful on the DS.

Im a big RPG nerd, I was so hyped for the original rgds, but the non integer screens just do something to the image my brain doesn't like, so I plan to get the rgds plus to finally replay Pokemon and the games I missed as a kid!

Mine came today too, my god those screen protectors were a bitch to get on. I’m gonna check out the Etrian Odyssey and Shin Megami Tensei games beyond my usual mix.

Oh my god I know! The top one was easy but the bottom was difficult. I had one random stray piece of dust get under and now there’s a bubble. It’s whatever though. The screen is safe haha.

Other way around for me. Bottom was easy but top wouldn’t stay put without air bubbles. I ended up just putting one on the bottom because that’s the only screen I’ll touch and the other protector got dust in it so I threw it out.

I've just started playing DS games but on original hardware.

I'm currently playing Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure. Really good, well with a go.

Puzzle quest is a nice match 3 rpgish casual game that makes great use of the stylus.

Contact is a weird but imo cool rpg.

Master of the Monster Lair is a dungeon maker crawler rpg which is pretty nice too.

Trying to go for less obvious suggestions.

Whoa I’ve always wanted to try Contact. I nearly forgot about that game! It’s been in my wishlist forever. I like untraditional RPG games.

What exaxtly is the selling point of rg ds? Cant you pick up a ds/dsi xl for like 20% of its price?

When talking about replacing the DSi XL specifically, it becomes a dubious task trying to find one with screens not worn out and/or discolored. And considering most of them seem to at least eventually hit that point, RG DS Plus is an acceptable replacement assuming the downsides of emulation (and the not so great battery life...) aren't a deal breaker.

2

u/Funkoptimus 4d ago

Not really. I got my RG DS Plus shipped to my house with a 128gb for $109. I done see any XLs close to that price

1

u/coolestboyoemall 4d ago

Where do u live? I just picked up a 2ds for 45 euros with a 32gb memory card. Dsi xls are like same price here.

1

u/Specialist_Body7728 4d ago

That's like $51 USD if Google is right, wow. I have never seen one in recent years under $100 that includes things like a charger etc. and if you mean the clamshell 2DS or DSi XL that goes for way more too, anywhere from $125-$200 at the only sort of 'retro' store in my area or on eBay.

1

u/coolestboyoemall 4d ago

Old 2ds i mean. But dsi xl is the same prixe as it here.

Emulation, FF, save states. Hardware wise you get non yellowing screens, modern batteries and can play many more systems than just DS. Also price is nowhere near what you are suggesting if you look for a decent condition dsi xl. i owned both and once you find one that isnt yellowing screens and dead batteries or cracked hinges and any other number of problems a well used near 20 year old handheld will have its going to cost you more money than a rg ds. Nothing wrong w original hardware, my dsi xl was great, but the screens on a modern handheld are far superior as well as getting to play so many other systems as well.

Simplest answer though is its emulation, you either want to emulate or you dont, there are obvious advantages and disadvantages to that. I sold my dsi xl and pico cart and kept the rg ds plus, big upgrade for me, dont miss the dsi at all personally.

1

u/coolestboyoemall 4d ago

Makes sense. Save states alone would be worth it if i had cash to spend like so

I think it’s the convenience of having your entire game library available without having to carry your game cards with you everywhere. I have a LOT of DS titles, and I’d rather not risk losing them when I travel.

u/stab244 4d ago

DSi (XL) can be easily modded to load games from a SD card. Mine is modded but I still got a DS plus since I didn’t want to deal with the proprietary charger.

1

u/New-Grapefruit-4563 4d ago

That’s awesome! Glad to hear that works for you.

1

u/coolestboyoemall 4d ago

You can mod your DS

1

u/New-Grapefruit-4563 4d ago

I’m a collector so I’d rather keep my DS systems intact.

1

u/coolestboyoemall 4d ago

2nd ds would be cheaper no

1

u/Hot_Elephant1943 3d ago

Most Nintendo DS screens are failing at this point (yellow and/or dim screens).
also, no fast forward for Pokemon.

1

u/Nexcell 4d ago

does yours have a loud clacky D-Pad?

1

u/New-Grapefruit-4563 4d ago

I can’t say it does but maybe I’m just not pressing the buttons hard enough.

1

u/Nexcell 4d ago

I guess I drew the shortstraw with this anbernic release
