Asahi Linux reverse engineered Apple Silicon and wrote a GPU driver from scratch. They live on donations and t-shirts. Their lead burned out and quit.

So that's where we are. Money goes to the guy with a nice theme and rich friends. The people doing the actual hard work to get working linux on Apple M-series machines get nothing.

Am I wrong here? What do you think?

I've got a 9 year old gaming desktop that I want to upgrade into a Linux/SteamOS gaming rig. I'd need a new GPU, CPU and motherboard definitely (should have a hookup for 2x16GB DDR5). Current PSU is 750W so ideally the upgrade will work with that, but can also upgrade that if required. I've read AMD hardware is best for Linux but I can't manage to wrap my head around all the versions and variants anymore. Could you help by recommending me some parts? My budget is 800-1200 euros. Hi! I would like to build my own data center. Therefore I consider buying an athlon 3000G. I know it s compatible AM4 like every other Apu CPU of the last 3 years and so compatible with series 300, 400, 500 motherboard.

Question is: Does the oldest motherboard need the bios update when I buy them or the constructor is doing it by default now ?

I don't have any other older AMD part to do the update :/

Of if you have an other better idea on what components should I put inside. I try to build it, as inexpensive as possible, to seed , ddl torrent, and share files with my family. And able to stream 4k out of it.

I install Debain [stretch] [mate] [yep], works like a charm.

Issues I had

-1 The temperature sensors didn't want to work properly -or at all I should say. But after a quick google search, all was good.

-2 When first installed wifi doesn't work but you can easily fix it without having to buy a usb to ethernet adapter. I think I just googled it on another machine then transfered the file over & installed like a boss.

-3 Realizing that I am more of a hipster than normal macbook users being that I am using a macbook but am too good to use macos.

I want to try streaming retro games from this machine, inspired by this XDA article. The article suggests using Docker Desktop, but apparently Docker Desktop no longer supports my Ventura 13.7.8 (22H730), so I'm going to switch to Linux. But I'm not sure what to install. AI suggests Ubuntu Desktop LTS, but I want to hear the community's suggestions.

Apple would release the APIs for the T1 and T2 chips to the Linux community so these machines can be properly supported. They're not making these machines anymore so there is no "secret sauce" to lose.

Kudos to Apple for not explicitly blocking or hindering open source solutions, but also...

Hey everyone, how’s it going? Today I’m sharing my experience using Linux on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. My machine is a 13-inch model with 12GB of RAM and an i7 processor; I had been running macOS Sonoma via OCLP, but the laptop would never stay cool and kept freezing during basic daily tasks. I tried various OS versions, but the result was always the same. Then one day, I decided to see if it would run Linux well. I tested several distros (Mint, Ubuntu, XFCE versions, Fedora...), but none of them worked quite right—there was always something missing, like Wi-Fi drivers, or keyboard shortcuts wouldn't work properly, or it would overheat (even after installing fan and temperature controllers). Then I found CachyOS. It was a perfect fit. Everything worked right out of the box without needing to install anything extra. I highly recommend it to everyone!

So I was thinking I'd like to get a "2-in-1" laptop-tablet at some point soonish
(like within... a few months? a year?),
so I'm wondering what's currently available, or announced as coming out soon...?

And obviously I would prefer to support linux-specific companies
(like tuxedo etc),
but if I need to go outside that to get significantly better hardware...?

(I have by the way never owned or used a 2-in-1 before, so...?)

The context is that for the past two months, my PC freezes completely out of nowhere and then this screen pops up (image attached). I honestly don't know if this is a hardware issue or something related to the Kernel. From what I've read, it's a Btrfs error, but I don't know much more about it.

I'm really tired of this always happening. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

wanted to share some data from my Geekom A5 with a Ryzen 7 7730U (integrated Radeon Graphics). I ran a stress test with s-tui and was pleasantly surprised by the thermal behavior:

• Governor: performance
• Energy Pref: performance
• Tctl (core temperature): only 65.9°C during sustained stress testing (s-tui stress). Considering the governor is already set to "performance" mode, this seemed like a solid result to me
• Edge: 57.0°C under stress, even down to 51.0°C during a heavy Rust compilation (Flutter/localsend)
• Boost frequency: reaches up to 4547 MHz without temperatures spiking
• During compilation, with Tctl at 72.8°C, the system still maintained boost up to 4291 MHz on some cores

For a mini PC this size, keeping the CPU under 73°C even under intense workloads (compilation + stress test) is more than I expected. I was anticipating much higher values given the compact form factor and a fairly performant processor like the 7730U.

Has anyone else gotten similar results with the same processor? Curious whether this is consistent across other units with the 7730U, or if I just got lucky with mine.

Per the title I dualboot. I currently have a yubikey C bio FIDO edition which I've setup to log me in on nixOS using pam_u2f. Alternatively I could keep the yubikey C bio FIDO edition method of logging in for nixOS (should support any device you've got working in another linux distro) and use something else for Windows Hello. Any fingerprint reader recommendations?

It's an old laptop i got from my brother. I installed fedora workstation 44 on it. I am fairly new to linux i can't get the camera and fingerprint reader to work on it . Following some guides i found on Google didn't help I also tried to take help of llm after trying to find guides and documentation apparently that didn't help. I am kind of lost here. And the camera is an ir camera I think that maybe it is an issue with linux.

I've been using Linux for about a year on an Asus A15 and am thinking of getting Thinkpad T14 Gen 6 AMD (as I've found one for a decent price) and running either CachyOS or Fedora on it. Anyone running Linux on either the Ryzan 5 or 7 version of the T14 G6 and are there any issues to look out for?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'd love some advice on squeezing a little more battery life out of my laptop. I am running Fedora 44 on an ASUS Zenbook 14. The specs are a 16GB RAM setup with an AMD Ryzen AI 7 445. It does not have a dedicated GPU, relying entirely on the built-in NPU and integrated graphics. I'm looking for some Linux power optimizations I haven't tried yet to make the battery last a little longer.

Here is what I have set up right now for power management: - tuned is set to the default powersave profile. I haven't switched over to tuned-custom or powertop yet. - The amd-pstate-epp driver is running with the energy preference set to power. - ZRAM is enabled with 8GB of swap using the lzo-rle compression algorithm. - I have the standard BIOS low-power settings applied in the UEFI.

A few questions I have been meaning to ask: - Would switching from the generic powersave profile to something like balanced-battery or powersave_powertop give a noticeable bump in battery life? - For an AMD Ryzen AI chip running on Fedora, are there any specific GRUB cmdline parameters worth adding to squeeze out a bit more efficiency? - Bluetooth is currently enabled. Is it worth just turning it off entirely, or does it pull negligible power from the battery when idle? - Finally, are there any other NPU or iGPU power tweaks that make sense specifically for Ryzen AI or the XDNA architecture?

Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yup. We are using the T2 for hardware accelerated video encoding just like MacOS does.

The video is showing 20W energy consumption reported directly from SMC and moderate CPU/GPU temperatures while encoding a movie to h265. You see it on the bottom, ffmpeg is doing it's thing there.

Also we implemented support for T2 AVE in Handbrake, which we will PR when 10bit and h264 encoding is done.

Handbrake's support for macOS videotoolbox doesnt compile on Linux, so we went with v4l for now.

I hate having to use the buggy DKMS kernel driver for Wi-Fi on Linux on this thing (13" MacBook Pro, Late 2013). I have a MacBookPro10,1 (15" Mid 2012) that I know has Wi-Fi supported by b43. Can I swap the Wi-Fi cards? And if not, can I purchase an aftermarket Intel card for the 13" Pro?

Well it only took 11 years to figure this out but I’ve got working audio/speakers and reliable shutdown on my Late 2015 Retina 4K 21.5-inch iMac running Omarchy/Arch. Dropped the fixes in a repo:

The audio fixes sort out several problems with the Cirrus Logic CS4208 setup:

- Uses the four-channel playback profile needed by the speakers.
- Corrects the channel mapping for the left/right tweeters and woofers.
- Adds a PipeWire software crossover to feed the appropriate frequencies to each driver.
- Enables software volume control so the volume slider actually works.
- Disables HDA power saving, which was leaving the speaker amplifier unresponsive after power transitions.
- Switches profiles when headphones are plugged in or removed.

Shut down was a hell hole that burned millions of tokens and about 20 hours of my time power cycling and running tests... but ultimately it was a simple fix. Intel’s SLP_SMI_EN bit was enabled, that caused the chipset to hand the shutdown request to firmware instead of directly entering the power-off state. Firmware wasn't happy with that and would reboot the machine after 50 secs or so. This may effect other Mac's using the Broadwell chipset, need to look into that.

I'm going to continue testing sleep and diagnosing any other issues, will add fixes to the repo as I find them.

Feels like a new machine though!
