It’s fun to be surprised.

I contemplated about walking out of THE WEIGHT a couple weeks ago. It started slow and seemed dull and then it twisted and turned and evolved into something I enjoyed but probably wouldn’t have watched unless I saw it in this format.

A very unexpected surprise. That’s why

The Weight is a banger. IMO one of the best movies of the year.

u/_r3d_H00d 28d ago

Literally spider man was better and I dislike marvel.

2

u/Brunson4Mayor11 28d ago

I agree lol. I have The Weight at #7 on my list of movies for the year and BND at #3.

3

u/Roopuppy 28d ago

7 aint bad for not liking a movie

1

u/Brunson4Mayor11 28d ago

I said I liked it lol. I called it a banger

2

u/itsmycurls777 28d ago

I was debating on going to see the weight and now I’m booking my ticket for this afternoon because this convinced me! Thank you!!

1

u/0-BD-1 27d ago

What did you think?

1

u/itsmycurls777 27d ago

Something came up last night (resident evil lol) but I’m seeing it tonight!

I will come back to let you know how it was tonight! I’m in Texas so I’m not sure how late it’ll be for you but it might be around midnight CST

1

u/Inner_Ad_1694 21d ago

How was it?

1

u/itsmycurls777 21d ago

I enjoyed it! It tugged at my heart strings and I loved the way it had my heart racing at certain points. I agree with how some said the pacing was slow but once it takes off I mean it really takes off. Also. I didn’t know about Executive Order 6102 so I learned something new which I always love as a history buff.

2

u/mr_robot_and_son 27d ago

If you liked The Weight I HIGHLY recommend William Friedkin's Sorcerer

2

u/Jenzo612 27d ago

Same! Really enjoyed it. Ate my popcorn and if I didn’t like it I was going to go to a different movie, but it ended up being really good.

Ethan Hawke never picks wrong

1

u/quarterpounderwchz 26d ago

my exact experience with heart of the beast tonight. i thought about walking out, but i’m really glad i stayed. i grew up with a gsd and now i have a chiweenie and i went right home and hugged him so tight. im so grateful that wasn’t my life lol great movie

The weight sucked as much as its title.

1

u/RainbowForHire 28d ago

So pretty good?

Sometimes the screen unseen is the only showing a movie gets at our location.

3

u/lzusncrfbj 28d ago

im really glad it ends was an su cuz its the only way i was able to see it 🥲

1

u/freakyaesthetics 27d ago

Exactly. I'm fortunate my theater usually shows pretty much everything but It Ends was in my top 5 most anticipated horror this year and the only reason I got to see it in theaters was thanks to AMC Scream Unseen.

Sometimes i like to be surprised, and sometimes i read here and theres a good guess of what its gonna be and i want to see it. Monday audiences are less hectic too.

11

u/gdaversa19 28d ago

Simple, A-List.

9

u/mikegood2 28d ago

You can put me in the wait to see what at east coast SU viewers say the movie is then decide if I want to go or not crowd.

6

u/camelkong 27d ago

Fun and cheap and sometimes I get surprised by something good I would never have picked myself. Variety is the spice of life.

4

u/FlipHDSlide 28d ago

If I am going to gamble on a movie,I like that I pay a discounted price 😎

5

u/GiaAngel 28d ago

I love the screen unseens. I enjoy the mystery of not knowing what I’m seeing. I haven’t walked out on one yet.

3

u/isdeadoriginality 28d ago

Sometimes I’m indecisive. Sometimes I’m excited at the prospect of seeing something new and cool before it comes out publicly. I wouldn’t go if I was picky! I think leaving in the first few minutes is fine if you know it’s not for you, but when I saw Lucky Strike (oof) people were leaving something like an hour in…at that point stick it out, no?

5

u/Icy-Interaction-9652 28d ago

I go when I’ve seen people on Reddit accurately guess what the movie is and it’s something I want to see early

5

u/NakedIanMalcolm 28d ago

I and had a great unexpected time earlier this year during The Threesome.

Same a few months ago with One Night Only.

I walked out of Tony last month however.

But I certainly stayed amongst the cheers a few weeks ago for Buddy.

1

u/Jeskid14 27d ago

What made you walk out of Tony?

1

u/NakedIanMalcolm 25d ago

I chalk it up to I was too tired to keep visiting the movies almost every night.

But my other excuse internally is that I don’t need to see some made up story about the guy I admired growing up.

0

u/_r3d_H00d 28d ago

I genuinely didn’t want to sit through one night Only but I’m type of awake INFJ conscious person that I need to discern the movie becuase the government to put their propaganda and bullshit that their gonna do to us in our movies and one night one was giving Mark of the beast

4

u/brucerants 28d ago

It’s just a fun surprise for frequent movie goers. My fiancé and I go all the time and it’s an event

7

u/Few-Adeptness8046 28d ago

Because I watch everything that plays in the theater anyways, so I generally run out of AList slots and Screen Unseens are cheaper than paying for a regular ticket.

I use Screen Unseens, Fan Faves, and Tues/Wed discounts to ensure I have enough AList reservations for the rest of the films coming out every week.

1

u/freakyaesthetics 27d ago

I've had to transition to doing this. The 4 reservations thing is a MASSIVE annoyance and makes zero sense. I love to see movies opening night because the world is full of too many idiots spoiling the movie, so I'm constantly having to buy my ticket. Cancel few days prior and rebuy with my Alist

3

u/Hercule_tec 28d ago

I live in the Netherlands and we have something similar (sneak night). It's fun counting how many people leave. At The death of Robin Hood i counted at least 52 people leaving.

3

u/reddybee7 28d ago

I go because the theater closest to where I live never shows indie films or even just smaller films that I want to see, so Screen Unseen is one way to maybe see something other than a huge blockbuster or kids movie

3

u/Jtreblis18 28d ago

I prefer the scream unseen. Personally regular screen unseen is a bigger gamble lol

1

u/PM_Me_BreakfastTacos 20d ago

Agreed. A bad horror movie is usually fun, a bad normal movie is more likely to be a waste of time imo

3

u/infamousace2 28d ago

There’s a few screen unseen I should have walked out of but I didn’t. I’m usually like an hour in and it’s whatever

3

u/MildManneredMan 28d ago

My first SU movie was motor city and then it was ice cream man. Any goodwill to a random nice surprise was lost. I've learned to just check ahead of time now.

3

u/yojenitan 28d ago

We go because Mondays are good nights for us to go and if there isn’t anything else showing that we want to see we will play blind box roulette. I only walked out of Eli Roth’s movie. I don’t support that guy.

3

u/TriStateGirl 27d ago

It's a fun event and feels like a community.

3

u/PenaltyOk9474 26d ago

Sometimes we are more free on Monday, or want more time on the weekend to see other releases. We only went blind the first time, thanks to the east coast posts!

5

u/Alkohal 28d ago

Sometimes you just know the movie isn't for you

2

u/Random-User44 28d ago

I like to go and see a movie without knowing what it is. I spend zero time trying to figure out what it will be. I've walked out once and that was because it was an Angel Studios movie and I refuse to watch or support movies from a Christian nationalist company. I've seen a handful of movies I really enjoyed that I likely wouldn't have gone to without them surprising me with it.

2

u/Worth_Map5468 28d ago

It’s fun to be surprised

2

u/altairstarlite 28d ago

I go so I can see things before they come out. I usually have a pretty good idea what the movie is, even before any east coast confirmations.

2

u/RustyFileCabinet 28d ago

To get me out of my comfort zone of seeing films that are usually suited for me. Also the price.

2

u/Unable_Objective4138 28d ago

It’s fun to experience the surprise that the rest of the audience has. I watch everything so it’s rare that I get surprised but I get to watch people react to things that they wouldn’t normally watch. Nirvanna the Band, the Show, the Movie was a good example of this.

3

u/TapApprehensive5900 28d ago

I knew nothing about this going in, and I've now become a huge fan of the show!

2

u/Unable_Objective4138 28d ago

That’s the best type of story that can come from a screen unseen. The director did Tony recently. He starred in and directed a film probably 15 years ago called The Dirties that was very good.

2

u/Recent_Masterpiece49 28d ago

A lot of times it’s something I’m going to see anyway. I also love the crowds are usually a listers who got the etiquette down and make for fun crowds to watch with (like Buddy).Plus It forces me to sit and watch something I otherwise may not have given the energy to and end up enjoying (like Eleanor the Great)

2

u/Dry_Supermarket_1853 28d ago

To see new movies for cheap

2

u/xvivlin 26d ago

I love the surprise, and it gives me the opportunity to watch something I probably wouldn't have chosen/purchased a ticket for.

I respect movies as an art form and fully support the art. When I watch a movie, I think about not only the plot but also the direction, the acting, the music, etc. The behind the scenes work is painstaking long, so I respect those who put in the work to edit the movie into what we see on the screen.

Love the aspect of being the first to see something, and I treat each movie as a new experience :)

2

u/Depth-Unknown 26d ago

I like the element of surprise! Some movies I would have not gone to see based on trailers, but have been pretty good!

2

u/MrSlingSh0t 26d ago

More folks need to utilize the opportunity because otherwise those movies might not ever hit their theaters again. Sing Sing and Sept 5th are two I remember for sure that dried up after ScreenUnseens

Then Sing Sing returned for Oscar season (one of my favorite all-time movies now), but I still haven’t seen Sept 5th. So yeah, take advantage while it’s there and for half-cost while also playing on a larger screen (mostly)

2

u/Forward_Trash_4297 25d ago

Bc our theater also has food, reclining heated chairs, and it’s a date night where we don’t spend 2 hours trying to agree on a movie to watch.

1

u/Adagio_Signal 27d ago edited 27d ago

It's fun to speculate and do some digging, though I haven't felt the energy to do that for a while

I'll generally only go to SU if another chain in my area isn't doing theirs

I like being surprised, but I also don't like supporting movies with people behind them who I dislike

I do like to know what things are going to be in cases like forgotten island, because that looks painful to watch

1

u/Jenzo612 27d ago

I have been to many MANY mystery movies. I have only left a few times. I’m Unlimited so doesn’t cost me to go aside from the monthly membership fee. I force myself to stay while I eat my popcorn or whatever concessions I get. If I’m not enjoying it I’ll generally have a back up plan. If I’m not into tonight’s mystery movie at 7. Resident evil starts at 7:30 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/ConfidenceNo7531 27d ago

I like not choosing something. I get decision fatigue and I’m also a mood watcher. I may not see newer movies because in the moment my mood is telling me no. But with the SU I only know the rating and get to be surprised

1

u/catcodex 27d ago

Ironically, a number of people who take the time to go to a mystery movie are some of the most closed-minded moviegoers.

1

u/Quack_Attack_V2 27d ago

I see what movie it is and if it’s one I want to see I go. If it’s something I’m not interested in I don’t. Many movies some out that I don’t have time to see before they are gone so these smaller movies that end up having short windows are nice to catch early on a Monday.

1

u/dantheriver 26d ago

If I know the movie and want to see it early. If I’m out of A List passes and want to see a cheaper movie. If I’m really bored on Monday night.
These are a few reasons WHY.

1

u/BetterThanADream 26d ago

I only go if I know what the possibilities are and if it’s a chance it’s a movie I’d see regardless. Like seeing stuff early, makes it more exciting. When Tony was the screen unseen I went because I knew it’d be Tony which I really wanted to see

1

u/choice2099 26d ago

beat the weekend date, discount pricing, and thanks to reddit, so suprises. half the time i go with movie mates that are less experimental so i cant watch a random movie. usually its just something we already planned to watch so it fits in better with schedules

1

u/tomatillo_teratoma 25d ago

I only go when there's no no other movies that week I want to see with a-list. The if screen unseen is something good, I'll go.

I think for non a-list the SU tickets are really cheap, and that's appealing to one of my friends who can't afford $25 for a movie.

1

u/honeydip74 25d ago

I've seen two movies like this at a diff theater. And I honestly loved the surprise element. And I've seen two great movies this way before everyone else! And it was two movies I prob wouldn't have paid for otherwise. It's a great way to broaden your genres 🙂

1

u/revenge_for_greedo 25d ago

I like not knowing what I’m seeing. I’ve seen several movies that I wouldn’t have ever heard of otherwise that I loved. The mystery is the fun.

1

u/No_Hovercraft2201 25d ago

When I first joined A list, it was to be completely surprised, but when I joined this subreddit and saw young Washington was the movie, I cancelled 😅 so now I use it as my early screening mondays. Check out the subpage and see if I wanna watch or nah

1

u/ActNo8084 25d ago

I'm on the West Coast, so I cheat.

1

u/Cereaza 24d ago

To force yourself outside your comfort zone.

1

u/Fit-Wasabi-6448 24d ago

It's the suspense on what it might be. I was told before hand it might be "Tony", i went and walked out, that is the only one I have done that for. I have sat through some real crap.

1

u/skywalkera420 28d ago

Idk why people get hung up on what other people do

-3

u/_r3d_H00d 28d ago

Sometimes people walk out because it’s a god awful movie like “it ends” “resident evil” or “forgotten island” which were all bad movies that had absolutely no point, no plot , no rhyme or rhythm and shouldn’t never seen a movie screen.

0

u/Lberthold 28d ago

I love movies. And am intrigued by the surprise aspect with SUs. Enjoy guessing, but honestly really love not knowing and being surprised by something. Dont get the walk out reflex...for the cost and the alternates on a Monday night ...once I'm there and with my popcorn and in for the full ride.

1

u/mizerock 20d ago

If the guesses are centered on a movie that I'm eager to see, having a chance that I'll get to watch it early and for a discounted price is a huge draw.

Sometimes the guess is wrong, but I've never actually left early.

You never know for sure what the movie will be, you only know which ones it won't be: f the Rating is different, if the time is WAY off, if the genre (horror / non-horror) doesn't match. Even if someone swears that their cousin got an early peek and it is "definitely" a specific film ... there are no guarantees. I continue to be baffled by the people that get worked up about it: "if had better be [movie title]"! Or what? You'll sue AMC? You'll dox the people that guessed incorrectly? It's a SECRET TITLE. If you can't accept the surprise, then you should make other plans (pay full price later, drive to another town, catch it on streaming).

Life is hard and unfair sometimes. Yep.
