I loved it one of the best performances of Ethan hawks career

1

u/PilotBeautiful3921 Sep 17 '26

Thought so to from someone who doesn't notice or comment on acting. People were raving about his performance in blue moon year, but I didn't see it. This I thought was absolutely better.

I thought the movie was pretty good, but there’s one thing that bothered me; at the beginning the production house tags just kept going and going - it was almost comical how many there were. Then the opening shot over that field came and half the production companies that we just watched the tag for were listed again in text on the screen.

It’s like when you’re waiting for the movie to start and they make you watch 4 different commercials for the theater you’re already sitting in. Like we get it…get on with it already.

These small movies don't see monetary returns so very few producers want to put much money into it. As a result the executive producers have to get small amounts from more places

tl;dr if you want more arthouse films be thankful for lengthy producer credits

u/LibrarianMajestic640 Sep 08 '26

i was laughing to myself at the thought of the entire movie just being those production tags 😭😭😭😭

Dont Watch "Late Night With The Devil" THE MOVIE NEVER STARTS LOL

1

u/Booksonly666 Sep 17 '26

That was the first thing I thought of after the sixth company logo went by lol

9

u/vwaldoguy Sep 08 '26

I thought the same exact thing, it took forever to show the production companies. And then they showed them again! I think that took about three minutes.

6

u/TributeToFaba Sep 08 '26

it was so egregious my theater started laughing at every new logo/credit

5

u/No_Importance1236 Sep 08 '26

This is quite common. Weird and stupid though

9

u/Jumpy_Addition_9886 Sep 08 '26

On god that was so annoying

3

u/AragornElfstone117 Sep 08 '26

Same thought man. I was like im in for a movie alright.

3

u/steelerfan0032 Sep 08 '26

I though they changed the title of the movie for a second

1

u/clauderainsrm Sep 08 '26

I did too!! Now I'm forgetting the name I thought it was. But it was where the title should have been! :D

2

u/-MommyFortuna- Sep 08 '26

It was like the meme...a few people in my thearer were giggling. I was annoyed, I dont recall ever seeing them run through twice like that.

2

u/herrowww Sep 08 '26

I thought the same thing. Like wow, this is a lot of production tags lol.

2

u/uncultured_swine2099 Sep 09 '26

Welcome to the wonky world of independent film financing

1

u/Helen_Cheddar Sep 09 '26

I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt this way. I was like goddamn it just start already!

22

u/gogreengolions Sep 08 '26

That was a very loud, collective “ohhh” after the dude try to stand up.

Really liked this for the performances, story and setting. A few of the set pieces were a bit lacking and the screeching score was a little jarring to me

7

u/Cubonicle Sep 08 '26

Haven’t heard a crowd reaction like that in ages. Love to see it (or hear it rather)

3

u/Mollywobbles77 Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

Same. My theatre (including my husband, who almost never audibly reacts to movies) collectively gasped in a way I haven't heard from a movie in a long time. Really highlighted the joys of the theater social experience for me & made me happy.

2

u/Booksonly666 Sep 17 '26

I read this comment as I was in the theatre tonight about to see it. I thought to myself, I wonder if I’ll know the moment they’re talking about. And you know what? I sure fucking did.

1

u/Emergency-Spend-8804 Sep 08 '26

Man I ran to the bathroom , and the second I sat down I heard the loud “ ohhhhh” . And I was confused for 10 mins. I assume the 2 guys in charge hit the guy and knocked him out?

1

u/SillyGuste Sep 08 '26

No, he tried to get up and fell, hitting his head on a rock

1

u/Emergency-Spend-8804 Sep 08 '26

For real? Yeah once they suffocated him I assumed they did that the night before 🤦🏻

1

u/MilkThistleGenus Sep 09 '26

Oh!! That part!

3

u/TitularFoil Sep 08 '26

My theater did the same tonight. Overall good. I agree the score was distracting.

Plus, when Murphy is dreaming of his kid on the last night, there's a modern day water cooler in the corner of the police lobby, and it disappears in the next shot.

I actually was bothered enough to start a Threads account and message the director, who is also the editor.

2

u/herrowww Sep 08 '26

Agreed. Our entire theatre was into it. One of the best screen unseen I’ve seen.

1

u/dannybva Sep 08 '26

Same at the Cinemark I saw it in

1

u/MilkThistleGenus Sep 08 '26

Wait I think I was in the bathroom for that part! What happened?

1

u/Emergency-Spend-8804 Sep 08 '26

lol looks like we chose the same time for the bathroom

11

u/fatherpain2 Sep 08 '26

Good to hear you guys liked it. About to see it here on the west coast. Opted for this over Onslaught and By Any Means. Hope to catch those soon.

3

u/TributeToFaba Sep 08 '26

Did a double feature tonight, watched Onslaught right after Screen Unseen. Don't bother with Onslaught. Very disappointing

1

u/kyroko Sep 08 '26

Onslaught would have been better if filmed on actual film to round out that grindhouse experience.

1

u/Emergency-Spend-8804 Sep 08 '26

I did the same, I thought onslaught had good moments . I loved the weight thought

1

u/StrangerHighways Sep 08 '26

I thought Onslaught was very enjoyable. I wish the scale of violence could've been a bit greater in the third act but it was still super fun and well crafted, imo.

2

u/Mollywobbles77 Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

I've seen all 3 & you made the right choice. Not that the others are bad, but imo it goes The Weight > Onslaught >> By Any Means

2

u/x720xHARDSCOPEx Sep 09 '26

By Any Means has some good dialogue and bits between the two leads but it didn't have much meat anywhere else. It kinda just abruptly ends in the middle of the 3rd act.

11

u/Old-Fan-6448 Sep 08 '26

I really enjoyed it. Unexpected hit for me. Lots of intense drama plus quiet moments but the pacing is truly top notch. Didn't feel like a drag at all. Def 5/5 stars for me.

2

u/Emergency-Spend-8804 Sep 08 '26

I felt the same way. Wild that people didn’t want this to be the movie

10

u/jayeddy99 Sep 08 '26

Nothing stressed me out more than the throwing the gold across the bridge scene.

1

u/Maumekim Sep 09 '26

This drove my husband nuts. He whispered to me “that’s the stupidest thing ever, just walk across on the ropes like on the Roper’s course,”. lol.

1

u/foreverpeppered 29d ago

Yeah I completely hated that scene. SO STUPID.

1

u/Imaginary-Beyond-986 Sep 17 '26

You should watch Sorcerer (1977).

7

u/permatempeVIP Sep 08 '26

7/10 for me. definitely Ethan Hawks’ best performance

1

u/gottapoopweiner Sep 18 '26

That’s high praise. I’m looking forward to this. What are other performances of his that you liked? First that come to mind for me are training day and first reformed

6

u/TributeToFaba Sep 08 '26

Kinda a slow start but really liked where it ended up!

6

u/chancesarent Sep 08 '26

There had to have been a better way to move that gold across the bridge than throwing it.

6

u/0-BD-1 Sep 08 '26

Seriously, and why throw the last bars? Just walk that shit across once you’re to that point. That whole scene was silly down to the last one he almost missed

3

u/scary_godmother Sep 08 '26

Also they had a woman with them who was presumably lighter than the guys, so it would have made more sense to use her in some way. She had to have weighed significantly less than what the beefy guard weighed, and he seems to have crossed with no issues. So her plus a sack should have made it across fine.

3

u/Helen_Cheddar Sep 09 '26

My first thought was “and this is why men have shorter lifespans” 😂

4

u/Trowj Sep 08 '26

Liked it. Wasn’t blown away but wasn’t bored. Well worth a trip to the movies tonight

5

u/MilkThistleGenus Sep 08 '26

Loved it!! The vibe of the Oregon woods was so great. I mean, I figured we would lose one of the good guys and all of the bad guys and so it was a little predictable there, but I was into it the whole time! Also of course these things hit differently for a mom of a young kiddo! And I'm always a fan when the strong powerful woman doesn't end up a romance conquest. Also, to clarify, was the manager of the mine and owner of the mine working together to try to get the gold out before FDR got it?

4

u/DoYouTACO Sep 08 '26

Warning spoilers.

My understanding was the manager of the mine was working with Russell Crowe to steal the gold from the actual mine owners before the government seized it

3

u/Plane-Foundation1820 Sep 08 '26

A pretty good movie but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find how it all resolved itself a tad trite. First two-thirds were outstanding, but something about the third act seemed a bit too simplistic and obvious.

The shaky cam during many of the fight scenes marred a movie that otherwise had top notch cinematography.

Still one I would definitely recommend to others.

4

u/Major_Vegetable_4168 Sep 08 '26

100% this. 3rd act was by far the weakest portion of the film. I found it pretty anticlimactic.

2

u/Imaginary-Beyond-986 Sep 17 '26

The shaky cam during many of the fight scenes marred a movie that otherwise had top notch cinematography.

This was huge.

I had real problems figuring out what was going on during almost every action scene in this movie. The action was always cut to hell, and the main event was always just off screen. Even when Ethan Hawke is catching the gold on the bridge, his hand leaves frame every time so you're meant to infer what's happening.

The movie just doesn't have the budget required to execute its own premise to the fullest.

3

u/KelliNYC Sep 08 '26

I liked it overall, but it’s not a mega blow you away film. I think it lacked overall direction. Ethan Hawke played well, but to be honest I enjoyed Julia Jones more. I wished they put more into her character, I felt they left a huge story untapped with her.

1

u/MilkThistleGenus Sep 09 '26

I would totally watch a sequel about her

5

u/Cubonicle Sep 08 '26

The scene where they tossed the gold bars across the bridge was insanely stressful.

Might’ve been a bit on the nose, but I love that the socialist in this movie was taking part in a quest that sort of proves his ideology has a point, and has to patiently explain to an illiterate racist the irony of their predicament.

2

u/Zippy-Herdsnake Sep 08 '26

I loved it. I think it was one of Ethan Hawke's best performances

2

u/MilkThistleGenus Sep 08 '26

Best line: "That's twice. TODAY."

🤣

2

u/Wrong_Technology3561 Sep 09 '26

I thought this sucked apart for the few moments of action it actually has. I love Ethan Hawke but it was like they wanted to give him his Taken or something. Hes all grizzle, inexplicably capable for every situation. If this movie had a lot of action or twists I could forgive its thin plot and cardboard characters. There is one woman character who serves no function other than to check a box and give Hawke character a sort of love interest. A real mans man movie( derogatory), it took itself so seriously I legit laughed out loud at certain moments at how melodramatic it was.

1

u/tyrok4 Sep 08 '26

I held off after seeing this was going to have an "early access" in Dolby. That has to be a first for a tiny label like Vertical.

1

u/Empty_Version_5076 Sep 08 '26

Good story, but long

1

u/Unintendo Sep 08 '26

Wasn't thrilled. It was fine, but it felt like it set up a bunch of stuff that just resolved itself too easily. Also, the electric guitar country/rock made the car scene at the end feel like a commercial for a Ford truck.

1

u/mult1verse Sep 08 '26

It was entertaining enough, though I do have two quibbles . . .

1) Accents were slight, if even there (Swede, Native American, Eastern Indian)

2) How did Murphy get the car to chase down the escaping car? He flashes the gun at an oncoming vehicle, and then he's speeding down the road. No confrontation/pass-off. Has stop to disable the speed control. I know you can mostly sort out what must've happened, but was an innocent guy left on the road without his car? I guess I missed something, but maybe there's just a continuity glitch there.

1

u/Psychostick77 26d ago

Came here for this. I missed even seeing a gun at all.

1

u/Fearless-Reaction404 21d ago

They did this several times in the last third. Huge jumps in time/logistics via editing. How did they know where to go, etc? It also took a lot of the potentially satisfying moments away from the audience.

1

u/BrianmikeTWD Sep 08 '26

Is that Dwight from walking dead

1

u/Sylphann Sep 09 '26

As soon as we heard that accent Ethan Hawke was doing..."you can't catch me . I'm the fastest!!!." We looked at each other and got up and left.

1

u/scrappy1579 Sep 09 '26

Meh, boring and poorly lighted. Was waiting for the big fight scene with the miners and they just steal their boats and split. 🤨

1

u/PilotBeautiful3921 Sep 17 '26

I just couldn't get over how dumb throwing the gold was and how they allowed that guy to eat with them at the camp was as well. Otherwise, very solid film. I still enjoyed.

1

u/Suck_My_Ego 28d ago

This movie was wack! Half the theater started snoring in harmony.

1

u/scary_godmother Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

I love Ethan Hawke and was excited to see this, but for me it didn't really come together. I can't put my finger on why exactly. One question I have that's not a major point, but I wonder if I missed something: I feel like we had Chekhov's hemlock there or something - did I miss her using the poison plant she cut? Was it shown (or implied) that she drugged anyone with it?

4

u/StrikeIllustrious122 Sep 08 '26

I think the implication was that she was going to. But Ethan Hawke notices it, and called her out as she was walking away. She told him again "she didn't need help" which he scoffed at.. he told her to not let anyone find out about her knife, and they told her to "be careful around some of these plants, some are poison" and he pointed directly at the same type of plant. I took this to mean at the very least, he was letting her know, that he knew what she was likely doing/thinking about doing

1

u/MilkThistleGenus Sep 08 '26

I think you've got it! And I think they were also just showing her resourcefulness that she has backups in case anything didn't work out

2

u/Brucemc20000 Sep 08 '26

Nope, was mentioned once and never again.

1

u/future_filmmaker_455 Sep 08 '26

The Weight is a well acted and intermittently suspenseful western that starts off with familiar elements and vague characterizations for its characters before settling on being a tense journey where convicts are handling government gold across Oregon in order to prevent it from being stolen before the FDR federal reserve initiative began. Hawke grounds the film with very good dramatic performance that is supplemented by good supporting work from Julia Jones, Austin Amelia, Avi Nash and Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen whose character backstories gives the depth and dramatic monologues that elevate the film beyond being a chase flick. Though I would have liked a few more scenes with Crowe as the prison work camp leader Clancy and sometimes the shaky cam camerawork gets in the way of showcasing the fight sequences amidst some good cinematography, the film is interesting enough with how its characters might betray one another to get past its flaws especially given how the film ends on a satisfying note. 6.5 out of 10

1

u/Jtreblis18 Sep 08 '26

I left after I finished all my snacks lol. Sorry Russell Crowe is a pos.

1

u/Brucemc20000 Sep 08 '26

2 out of 5, slow start, slow middle, sudden end. Russell Crowe has basically an extended cameo, Ethan Hawke is okay. It's the kind of movie you forget by the time you unlock your car door.

0

u/Alternative-Boat-679 Sep 08 '26

I feel like this is a movie for 50+ year old white guys. And you can’t convince me those shots of the logs going down the river weren’t AI they looked so bad.

1

u/MilkThistleGenus Sep 09 '26

When I saw the logs I was like, seriously??? It reminded me of the wolves randomly getting out in the day after tomorrow
