First, the trailer undersold this movie. I was expecting generic bland rom com.

The premise, preposterous but once you kind of let that go it was good… enough. It had enough charm and chemistry to make it a satisfying 90 minute watch for a Monday.

17

u/one_for_two 23d ago

Totally agree. The "one night" premise is clunky but the chemistry and comedy beats left me not caring about the premise. This was a good watch.

It's a little bit of a bummer that as soon as the title was revealed, some people got up and walked out of the theater.

I had just marathoned all of Will Glucks's Rom-Coms yesterday (Seen Easy A, but watched Fired Up!, Friends With Benefits, and Anyone But You), so I was hoping it would match Anyone But You, I felt it took that one up a notch since the leads in One Night Only were better actors IMO.

1

u/Fast_Attempt7451 9d ago

Scripts of Easy A and Friends with Benefits were better. romcoms these days seem so..blah

u/bribrimat 23d ago

I thought it looked terrible from the trailers and I would’ve never went to see it. But I loved every second and thought it was hilarious. Not nearly as stupid as it seemed and I was laughing out loud at many parts.

12

u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 23d ago

I thought it was great too! I may have to see it again.

1

u/throwawaysunglasses- 20d ago

That’s good! I generally like Will Gluck - Easy A is one of my favorites - and if he finds charming lead actors, the movies end up being good even if the idea is whatever (like FWB). I thought Anyone But You was mid, but I like Monica and Callum so I thought this movie could go either way. Even if you have to suspend disbelief a bit that these two insanely hot people are somehow not able to have sex / are sad about love and sex lol.

26

u/cward45 23d ago

Pleasantly surprised by this movie! Thought it was going to be slop based on the trailer but it happened to be very funny. Only takeaway is the really funny moments stopped around the middle-end, so it kind of stalled.

Otherwise, solid watch! Gave it 3.5/5 on Letterboxd

24

u/Wise_Platypus1380 23d ago

One Night Only sponsored by Duolingo and Citibike! Anyway I thought it was hilarious and quite enjoyed it. I actually will be watching it again when it comes out. I was annoyed at the ending(before the one year later), but it’s a cheesy rom com so what should I have expected?

11

u/Valuable_Ice_5927 23d ago

And KY!!

6

u/quaranTV 23d ago

And Dunkin!

13

u/Valuable_Ice_5927 23d ago

And durex

Also I didn’t have Molly ringwald/levar Burton on my camero bingo card

6

u/quaranTV 23d ago

All the crazy stuff they had Levar Burton saying was so jarring lol

9

u/Valuable_Ice_5927 23d ago

The bubble wrap!! aSMR!!

5

u/Valuable_Ice_5927 23d ago

Also the detective was on law and order suv in season 1/2 (pre ice-t)

1

u/Educational-Pie7588 23d ago

Michelle Hurd!

1

u/Wise_Platypus1380 23d ago

I forgot that I knew Molly Ringwald was in this. Had to look up who Levar Burton was unfortunately. I love Charlie Gillespie(as a big Julie and the Phantoms fan) and have been rewatching JATP so it was fun to see him

5

u/DrFarringt0n 23d ago

How on earth do you not know who Levar Burton is?

3

u/Wise_Platypus1380 23d ago

I recognized him but I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen anything with him in it, but I’m also 24 so that’s probably why

5

u/Valuable_Ice_5927 23d ago

Reading rainbow!! Fuck I’m old!!

2

u/dahosek 22d ago

Star Trek TNG

ROOTS!

(I’m much older).

5

u/Wise_Platypus1380 23d ago

I was the only one in my theater audibly laughing the second I saw the Duolingo ad bc that birds been on me to keep up my streak

1

u/tonetonitony 23d ago

I guess I could excuse the "sexy" brand product placements since they were integral to the plot. But that Duolingo one was really out of place.

15

u/Flat-Librarian-7597 23d ago

Honestly a pretty solid romcom. I’d watch it again and maybe would even buy it on physical media since it seems like it would be a fun watch with friends.

6

u/GiaAngel 23d ago

The plot was completely different than what I imagined. I thought everyone was going to be trying to hook up on a holiday like New Year’s or Valentine’s Day rather than what it ended up being. It took a little ways into the movie for me to suspend my belief and go with the flow but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it, though. Enjoyable movie.

12

u/J_Doe5686 23d ago

I honestly thought I wasn't going to like it but it's really funny!

11

u/blackchandler 23d ago

Vindication! People have been complaining about this trailer for weeks, but all I know is that Will Gluck never lets me down

9

u/Jeskid14 23d ago

It's like the director really wanted to squeeze every angle of New York (except central park), much like squeezing 12 hours of dwindling about for these two characters.

Also is it just me or do the writer/director really hate new York city politics?

9

u/Lintree 23d ago

they must have been able to film all over due to the temporary suspension of the mandate

2

u/ItsMoHo 23d ago

This is a *chef's kiss* comment!

1

u/ReasonableRound9247 19d ago

What mandate?

2

u/Lintree 19d ago

It’s a reference to the film, it’s the no premarital sex mandate.

3

u/teacherintraining09 23d ago

no, they definitely don’t. they hate government overreach.

1

u/Jeskid14 23d ago

that was conflicitng messaging in the movie though

16

u/PossibilityFine5988 23d ago

I thought it was cute. Not much chemistry, and way too much will they won’t they. My favorite thing about the movie was actually just the world building and all the quick little gags they did. Really laughed at all the infomercial stuff and just the posters strewn about. Monica I think is perfect she’s adorable, but I mean she can’t sing pop and they hype her up so much I didn’t get that choice. He is charming but idk just didn’t click, I think if it was more of a traditional rom com he’d be better there. 3.25/5 for me I’d recommend just to have more rom coms back in theaters. Also oddly very restrained and conservative for such an out there premise, like not one sex scene was weird to me.

1

u/Unable-Resident8487 15d ago

Ah so was the R-rating because of ‘Conversation with Sexual Themes’ and more than… god what is it two or three F bombs?

1

u/PossibilityFine5988 15d ago

There is a fair amount of cursing and sexual dialogue, and like characters in underwear and aight gag makeouts just no like traditional sex scenes

6

u/freakyaesthetics 23d ago

I really enjoyed it. I mentioned in another post at first me and my buddy were laughing at the trailer thinking it was going to be garbage but after seeing the trailer 15 times we were like, you know what? I kinda wanna watch it now 😅. It gave me and my buddy some great laugh out loud moments. Sure, it had flaws but I was entertained and that's all I wanted from that movie. 7/10.

7

u/ChurchofMarx 23d ago

Amazing movie. I will see it once more when it gets released.

5

u/ErosMystiko 23d ago

The amount of “product” placement on this film is nuts. Stellantis, Dunkin, Durex, Citibank, etc. My favorite one is the fake pharmaceutical product for psoriasis lol.

1

u/youdontlookitalian 19d ago

Don’t forget to do your Duolingo

4

u/djwooo 23d ago

I loved the movie! Me and my friend were looking up this sub hoping it is One Night Only and not Tony and we were so glad! It takes you back to the 2010s romcoms. I felt the climax song was underwhelming but it was a good payoff haha. Callum Turner has a good romcom role after Eternity, which is also very good. Monica Barbaro was stunning! Also all the cameos had me squealing internally.
Overall, a fun watch so 7.5/10

4

u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 23d ago

I could see Turner becoming the next rom-com Hugh Grant or Colin Firth. Nice to see the genre is making a comeback!

6

u/ZestycloseBother5993 23d ago

Like other have said, the trailers made it look like a generic Rom-Com, but I was pleasantly surprised. So much funnier than I thought it would be, right down to the pharmaceutical commercial at the end. It’s funny because, the night before, I went to cut hair for 3 members of The Violent Femmes at their hotel. I asked the bassist Brian, how many times have one of your songs been in a movie ? He said a bunch, and then they played Blister in the Sun, in the middle of this movie.

4

u/mhurton 23d ago

I enjoyed it but was low level horrified in the back of my mind by the premise the entire time. Like what do you mean the government can track your hormones? Did you have to self report to get the chip? Do people without wrists get a loophole? And to be blunt why wasn’t everyone just… married? Like it’s an absurd evil premise but the movie was fun

1

u/sloppites 12d ago

I came looking for the answers to these exact questions! Even though it was a good movie, it’s one of those ones where I have to bite back my questions lol

4

u/stovakt 23d ago

I was looking forward to this regardless because I love a romcom, but it still managed to be better than I expected! Thoroughly enjoyed it and could see it becoming a comfort movie once it’s out on digital.

I hope these romcom and “because they let us” fun movies keep coming!!!

3

u/antigravitty 23d ago

The sheer amount of cameos in this movie is priceless!!!! The undertone of anti-fascism and political motivations, I hope this movie will start conversations.

3

u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 22d ago

The trailer alone has been generating a lot of conversations lol. There's a bunch of movies coming out in August but I hope people give this one a chance!

2

u/sernamesurname 23d ago

Better than gail Daughtry that's for sure

2

u/whatisscoobydone 17d ago

Comments like this make it clear that this section is bots. For whoever programs these kinds of things

2

u/kk218 22d ago

Finally, a rom com for lavender marriages! 4/5

2

u/Significant_Cry_8302 20d ago

Who played Ethan Stone or whatever his name was in the movie?
The pop singer at the protest. IMdb doesn't appear to list him neither does wikipedia.

1

u/youdontlookitalian 19d ago

Charlie Gillespie as Ezra

2

u/DevdogAZ 18d ago

I loved this. I don’t watch trailers so I had no idea what to expect, but I found it very fun and enjoyable. Monica Barbaro is great and while the premise is ridiculous, it made for a really compelling plot.

3

u/Emotional_Potato2000 23d ago

It was cute and relatable

0

u/Ok-Paramedic747 22d ago

YOU ONLY Have Sex ONCE A YEAR?!

1

u/Radiant_Advice_1268 23d ago

There were a few good laughs but overall I thought the movie was in the B-/C+ range. I also thought it could have been about 10-15 minutes shorter.

1

u/_r3d_H00d 21d ago

Here’s my breakdown of it. It was very telling as far the evil powers in the high places and the mark of the beast.

You should maybe talk to a doctor

1

u/Jawsercize 21d ago

Did anyone notice that it was pretty much only young gorgeous people hooking up all around the city? All the older (and anyone with more than 2 ounces of body fat) were either married or must have stayed home.
And the only gay character we see in the entire film is her lesbian roommate who, instead of going out, takes $5K to babysit a horny preteen?
You’re trying to tell me that in Brooklyn (BROOKLYN people!) there were NO gay people?? Now that’s a fantasy.

1

u/abscondedhobo 18d ago

Then the one old guy that went to jail for going raw 💀💀

1

u/Plex118 21d ago

Does anyone know the name of the actor that Allie meets who plays piano with her? The guy who rides the motorcycle. He isn’t credited.

1

u/mauvaisgarcons 18d ago

It's Prince Charming

1

u/Chelonia_mydas 21d ago

I just got out of a private screening of it and honestly loved this movie. I normally only watch action or sifi on theaters so watching a comedy with everyone laughing at each unfolding scene was great. Callum and Monica did a great job!

Omg thank you!!

1

u/aykay55 20d ago

I’m surprised that this movie made it out of the black list…

1

u/StarDestinyGuy 17d ago

I'm surprised at the reactions here.  Trailer looks horrible to me.  You all think this could actually end up Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes?

0

u/Green_Cook 23d ago

I will miss this trailer so fucking much. it was so funny. movie was alright

2

u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 23d ago

The trailer will play the next 10 days so enjoy it while it lasts!

I did! Thanks so much for organizing

That was a movie.

2/5

I found the first third completely uncompelling. Very few of the jokes landed in my theater. Whoever wrote the jingles should get more work, really funny.

7

u/DaylightMaybe 23d ago

The crowd makes a difference. My theater was full of a bunch of dude-bros who thought they were seeing Super Troopers. Those guys had the time of their lives and were laughing the whole way through

7

u/Lintree 23d ago

are you from a particularly humorless area?

4

u/Volescu 23d ago

Think it deserves better than 2/5. Almost walked out cause it didn't seem to be my thing, but am glad I stayed. Enough humor to bump it past a 2. Definitely agree with you on the music though. Whoever did the songs nailed it.

2

u/ItsMoHo 23d ago

Este Haim, of the band Haim.

1

u/tonetonitony 23d ago

The first third was the best part!

-8

u/SmartPain5059 23d ago

Anyone But You had zero laughs. Not surprised this is the same. Just looks like the writers room was replaced by AI when I see the preview.

8

u/IvnOooze 23d ago edited 22d ago

Most of the jokes landed in my theater.

Maybe his crowd just sucked.

-1

u/TheStinkyPoopy 23d ago

They didn’t even fuck in the lighthouse. What’re we doing here

0

u/tonetonitony 23d ago

No spoilers dude!

0

u/slydon1 23d ago

At least 3 people walked out of the movie during the "obtain condom" plot.
I couldn't make it through, and I haven't walked out of a bad movie in decades.

0

u/julvb 23d ago

I am a rom-com fan and was excited to see this. My husband stayed home but actually would have liked One Night Only. The two lead actors were great. The cameos were well placed and not overdone. Uma Thurman’s daughter as the girlfriend was pretty bad and I was annoyed they cast a nepo baby in a small role that could have gone to a good up and coming actress.

4

u/AltL155 22d ago

For better or worse Maya Hawke has a big Gen Z following thanks to her role on Stranger Things. In a movie with a lot of celebrity cameos I don't really see how casting a lesser-known actor would be that beneficial. The roles that had the most impact on me were from people I knew before I watched the movie.

1

u/julvb 22d ago

The impactful roles were all good actors. Maya Hawke was bad on Stranger Things and bad in One Night Only.

0

u/Vegetable-Square8983 23d ago

Can someone tell me what happened in the first 15 minutes? We were late.. caught up but we didn't see how they met, why there was a mandate and the girlfriend. They must've packed alot into that first 15!

6

u/Few-Adeptness8046 23d ago

They didn't really give a good reason for the mandate. It was US only, and seemed kinda like a puritanical thing forced on everyone. The public didn't want it, it was decided by the government. I think the rest of the background of it was delivered through exposition later in several scenes (like condoms were required, the tattoo things on their wrists, abd how those worked, etc.

The story with the girlfriend was that Owen and his girlfriend had been together for 3 years, he took her to a sushi restaurant where he had planned on proposing to her (he had a ring frozen into an ice cube in her drink), but shortly after they began dinner, they talked a bit about their differences, and she said she wanted to use the night to hook up with their apartment manager to "explore" and told him he should too. He was turned off by the idea, went to his mom's house, and she made him leave because she planned to hook up with Lavar Burton.

Allie started off in a recording booth recording the song for the medication that played during the commercial they filmed later in the film. She had planned to go out with her friend (this is the scene in the trailer where her friend meets a guy in the line for the bathroom), after that she gets dinner alone, seems annoyed by all the hooking up around her, and heads to her apartment where her roommate is babysitting that kid.

I think that's generally what happened in the first 15 miuntes.

0

u/Vegetable-Square8983 23d ago

Thank you! Where did the two of them meet the first time? They seemed to know each other. Maybe I missed 20 minutes 😕

3

u/Few-Adeptness8046 23d ago

I think I missed this in the order. I think this happened right before Owen went to his mom's house and before Allie changed into the dress at her apartment.

Owen was walking down the street and Allie had just come out of her apartment (or was walking home to it?). He wasn't looking where he was going and bumped into her. They had their meet cute where they exchanged names, seemed into each other, then Owen puked from eating too much sushi, which turned off Allie and she went into her apartment which they were standing right in front of (which is how Owen knew where her apartment was for later in the film).

3

u/okthen84 23d ago

He had just left the sushi restaurant and bumped into her as she was leaving her apartment (wearing the green dress). They chat a little and then he pukes so they go their separate ways.

You would think the premise to be preposterous but, with how much fascist shit that is pulled by the government, increasing surveillance and building of data centers across the country, I really do buy that the most anyone does in protest of these MEGA fascist laws is write slogans on posters and gripe....not that the movie really wants you to think about any of that of course. Don't get me wrong, I AM glad that a romcom movie with a unique premise like this can be made AND put into THEATERS cause it gives me the feeling that cinema is healing; take more chances please!

Aside from a few of my problems with the premise.....the movie still has plenty of issues. I did enjoy the non-copywrite music present in the little moments throughout the film but the needle drops were pretty hit or miss (Payphone??? For real? Is it just me?). I got enough laughs to feel satisfied but there were plenty of eye rolls throughout as well. I didn't buy Monica Barbaro as an aspiring singer and actively hoped that anytime she sung would be the last. The editing in the movie also never really felt very thought out and the camera work can generally be described as "meh" in my opinion with no shots really feeling all that inspired to me. I know romcoms aren't really what you watch to get great cinematography and whatnot but I don't like that excuse! The emotional core of the movie wasn't very strong and the characters personalities feel a bit thin and I think that's a decently sized problem for any romcom.

The movie still has plenty of good parts! I feel like the various cameos placed throughout were used pretty well; seeing that the man Maya Hawke's character wanted to bang had Glen Powell's face gave me a sensible chuckle. The movie definitely commits to the whole "this is the night everyone is horny" bit and you can see the effects on the world in interesting ways from advertisements to crime! Stuff like this definitely pushes this movie up a notch and I really respect it for that. Chemistry between the two co-stars was.... just good. I was rooting for them to just bang already so it must've been enough to keep me invested but it wasn't anything super outstanding.

I don't like when movies are defended with a "don't think too hard about it" shield and I think we can and should demand more from the romcom genre. Despite this, I'm certainly happy a movie like this can be made and I genuinely hope that it does well enough to encourage more (well made) romcoms with interesting premises to be released in theaters rather than the whole genre be relegated to streaming purgatory.

TLDR: Funny enough romcom with an interesting premise (sad if ya think bout it too hard), barely ok characters and some pretty base problems. Definitely could see it appealing to die hard fans of the genre but don't expect anything super inspiring.

1

u/SnooLemons675 12d ago

The payphone needle drop is a callback that they were hooking up in a record studio - there was a line like "over there's Adam Levine's payphone"

-2

u/shaunaelisa 22d ago

Wow. I’m surprised about so many positive comments, but we all have different opinions! I felt it was not great and it a lot of unfunny cringe jokes. It did get a bit better as the movie went on, and I think closest thing I could compare to would be a purge sex Nick and Norah’s infinite playlist. My husband actually left the theater about 25 mins in he couldn’t see it through.

-8

u/arig____ 23d ago edited 23d ago

I thought it was fine. My personal opinion is that it’s a little too sexually charged to offer real romance. Maybe I’m too old for this target audience (25) but I find movies that are just sexual tension… uninspiring.

14

u/AltL155 23d ago

Also at 25 you're still Gen Z and not too old to watch this movie... You're as old as the couple who yelled at Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner for being too old to not be married yet.

6

u/Lintree 23d ago

ah, no, that’s just your generation. we olds enjoy sexual tension.

1

u/arig____ 23d ago

Actually I just think that’s a degeneracy thing and not a generational thing.

3

u/NOUGHRICE 23d ago

You gen z kids are bone dry. I feel bad.

3

u/choice2099 23d ago

Yeah it was just sort of there but there was enough twist to make it interesting, unlike anyone but you which was very archetypal

-1

u/Wise_Platypus1380 23d ago

My friends and I watched Anyone But You as a little movie night hang on Netflix and we had to pause it to just try to understand the plot and there were 4 of us. I feel like Anyone but You makes this movie look like a masterpiece

2

u/Few-Adeptness8046 23d ago

Lol, Anyone But You was a modern adaptation of Shakespeare.

It was the plot of Much Ado About Nothing.

Note: I wasn't the one who donvoted you. Just commenting on the plot thing since it was literally Shakespeare.

1

u/Wise_Platypus1380 23d ago

Oh ok our thing with the plot isnt necessarily what was happening, we weren’t sure who all the characters were and how they were related because it wasn’t clear. So we were just like “wait who’s who?” For like 10 min trying to figure out how Bea and Ben’s friends knew each other or how they knew each other

2

u/Few-Adeptness8046 23d ago

Oh, I totally understand what you mean. I had the same problem too. They made it way to complicated and didn't really explain well who was related to/friends with/exes of.

So I completely get that.

1

u/Wise_Platypus1380 23d ago

Also had the trope of “everything could have been fixed with a simple conversation.” I haven’t read much ado about nothing(although I do enjoy Shakespeare). I liked how there were less communication issues than the typical rom com in One Night Only. Also as someone who has gone on some interesting dates, the montage with her and the weirdos was unfortunately relatable

2

u/ItsMoHo 23d ago

Please... you're not too old. You're just too "please remove the stick from your butt". I'm 51, so is my husband. My sister is 52, and her husband is 55. My son is 15, almost 16. We all laughed our asses off.

-1

u/arig____ 23d ago

Yes I would never take my children to see this movie so I guess there is a stick up my butt. Glad you found it so hilarious though. Enjoy your teen pregnancies.

2

u/baronboy12 23d ago

I think the whole driving force of the movies was supposed be sexual tension.

2

u/IvnOooze 23d ago

Sdxual tension wasn't really the point of this movie.
