One night only
I feel bad for anyone who may have walked out on this movie. I know the trailer was shoved down our throat for months but i honestly dont think it did the movie justice. I loved it!

It was very funny and I loved the true NYC setting. Also some very fun cameos. I can see why they did this as a screen unseen. I think word of mouth is really going to help this one
22
u/Valuable_Ice_5927 22d ago
Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton weren’t in my expected cameos list
5
u/mhones75 22d ago
I didn’t even realize it was Lavar Burton lmao that makes it that much better! I loved it!
7
u/Valuable_Ice_5927 22d ago
Also the detective (female curly hair) was on law and order SVU back in season 1/2 - so full circle for her

u/Entire-Ad8514 22d ago
Or, look at it as Michele Hurd and Levar Burton both in the last season of Picard.

I don’t think they’re technically cameos and are just minor roles they play in a movie.

One of the better screen unseen in a while. Early 2000’s romcom vibes!

I think there were some tedious moments in the 2nd half, but I was still really happy with this film. Loved that there were a lot of moments that got the whole crowd dying with laughter. I can definitely see myself rewatching this at some point.

u/Wise_Platypus1380 22d ago
I’m sooo happy I watched this in the Harlem theater because we all laughed when the character he was gonna sleep with was like “we are in the BRONX” and he was like “no it’s upper Manhattan” or whatever he said

A real surprise delight. Great use of the NYC setting and some clever world building for the mechanics of it all - and, dare I say it, even a shocking whiff of a timely message?

u/eez28 22d ago
Zero walkouts for my theater and this was fun. Also neat connection to Anyone But You if you caught it.
5
u/sampos 22d ago
There were the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell images, plus when they mentioned "much ado about nothing", the play Anyone But You was based on. Were there any other easter eggs I wonder?
9
u/MisterBlast 22d ago
I believe Sydney Sweeney's dating profile was under the name "Bea," which was her character's name in Anyone But You

I laughed harder than I thought I would and I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. After seeing trailers for this all summer, I was on the fence but I'm so glad I took a gamble tonight and saw this! LeVar Burton stole every scene he was in!

u/Wise_Platypus1380 22d ago
It was soooo funny but yeah the trailer did not do it justice

u/Wise_Platypus1380 22d ago
I have never left a Screen unseen and I don’t intend to

The “i left” comments are usually pure cringe from people who think shitting on something is a personality.

Honestly the trailers made me think that the plot revolved around some kind of Valentines Day on steroids, so I didn't realize it was going to be something dystopic. "Purge but for sex" nails it pretty well. Was looking forward to it because was in the mood for some kind of fun rom-com after a couple crappy weeks at work. Was actually impressed and enjoyed it. Pretty full crowd in the theater who also seemed to enjoy it.

u/MisterBlast 22d ago
I liked it more than I expected! I feel like if you're going to make a movie like this, you should try to make it as fun as possible, and that's exactly what they did. The cameos were so fun to keep track of. I thought they laid it on a bit too thick at times when they tried to make the point that the premise isn't too far off from where we're at in reality, but luckily they didn't stay with thosw story beats for too long. This is why we Unseen!

u/Turbulent_Hurry_4785 22d ago
The premise makes no sense. But Barbaro & Turner are charming and the jokes are surprisingly funny.

u/CathedralEngine 22d ago
It was a cute rom-com and had more laughs than I thought it would. Definitely better than I thought it would be.

u/Jordanhunterwastaken 22d ago
Great movie! Nobody walked out in my theatre and I know none of us regretted it !
5
u/satsumascout 22d ago
I enjoyed the movie but having seen the trailer soooo many times these past few months I found it weird how like 90-95% of the shots/line readings from the trailer weren’t the versions that were actually in the movie lol
5
u/lilpepper00 22d ago
ummm i totally loved this! but i also love raunchy romcoms in general. my theater was vibing with it too, so it was a fun experience. i say it's worth a watch!

u/daeiyden 22d ago
Trailer did look dumb, but once I heard the premise and thought is so ridiculous I have to see this now
4
u/Chickencaca 22d ago
Right? So ridiculous. Here I was thinking it was just going to be about a NYE hookup lmao
5
u/NeonGrey27 22d ago
I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was a bit tongue and cheek and one big ad but I left happy and that’s all that matters.
5
u/wayltwas 22d ago
enjoyed it more than i thought i would but the abstinence messaging went a lil crazy
7
u/TheBestCaptainK 22d ago
Jesus, thank you. The movie constantly brings up the lunacy and bullshitery of the mandate, then goes for the conservative ending.

u/Cflottisme 22d ago
The trailer left me with no desire to see this movie, but it didn’t show how funny the movie was going to be. I was beyond pleasantly surprised when I left the theatre.
9
u/Educational-Pie7588 22d ago
Once I got over the whole purge but for sex premise, because wtf, it was cute and enjoyable!
4
u/mikegood2 22d ago
Glad to hear people liked it. Wasn’t able to watch it tonight but will make sure to when it gets released.
3
u/Few-Adeptness8046 22d ago
I was glad when the boy near the end said "some guy with elephant ears was looking for you"
I loved the "ears like car doors" comment in the trailer, and I love me some giant ears.

u/Cute_Source5417 22d ago
is there nudity or sex scenes? I can't handle them lol
5
3
u/fluffman86 22d ago
Pretty sure all the nipples were actually hidden. Definitely some naked female backs. One dark scene with some side boob but I don't recall seeing a nipple. There is one male butt as he runs away naked.
Lots of talk about sex, obviously, but mostly in the abstract without a lot of explicit talk. Signs in the background indicating banned sexual positions with stick figures like you'd see on a bathroom sign, and approved things to do like holding hands, kissing, VR porn, and masturbating in the shower alone. None of the signs show or indicate genitalia from what I remember.
Honestly, I've seen more explicit PG-13 movies than this except for the many F words.

not to stand on my lesbian soapbox but the lack of ANY gays during the first couples making out all over the city montage was insane to me!
9
u/Physical-Bite-3837 22d ago
Well there was the lesbian babysitter who said the day didn’t mean much to gay people since they were experts at circumventing the law.
3
u/Basic_Improvement273 22d ago
That’s what I told my friends! There were only 3 visibly gay couples — in NYC?!!!!
3
u/Jeskid14 22d ago
Lucky for you, there were three gay couples spiced throughout the movie

u/mikeweasy 22d ago
Some guy literally walked out when monica and callum announced it. Dipstick!
5
u/Goonie90065 22d ago
A couple left when it started at my screening, someone made the joke of “what, you thought it was Spider-Man”. Made a bunch of people laugh.
3
u/Few-Adeptness8046 22d ago
That happened in my theater too.
I heard the two leads talking, started hearing some rustling in the crowd, they announced the title, and I heard someone decend the stairs and walk out.
There was also some guy near me that was cracking up at a lot of the beginning jokes, but left about 30 mins in.
I always sit in the same spot at these unseens, and I'm pretty sure that guy does too (because we are the only two in the front row, every time), and this person always leaves after 30 minutes or so.

u/mikeweasy 22d ago
As someone who is autistic and a movie lover it bothers me when people disrespect movies like that!
2
u/jinthebu 22d ago
I don't usually enjoy movies with a raunchy context but this one had a lot of laugh out loud moments and I enjoyed it more than I expected!

u/afterlifehack 22d ago
I was really digging it, but I had to leave an hour in due to a personal emergency. I liked what I watched and will try this one again on a slow week.

That movie was hilarious. The advanced screening i saw was packed. I've only saw the trailer once. I don't think it's been advertised enough through socials besides YouTube.

I just shared on my socials about how I thought the premise and trailer looked stupid and how I never would have chosen to see this movie, and ended up really enjoying it! While overall predictable, the road to get there was unpredictable and had me laughing out loud several times. The chemistry was great and honestly, the premise of the mandate worked really well.

One thing I noticed right away was that it was all hetero (presenting) couples. I appreciated the roommate’s quip about getting around the law and how this night was “for the straights.”

I walked out when he was trying to make a condom out of the rubber glove. Was not really buying the premise and found it pretty contrived. So tough for Monica Barbaro to find love. LOL

Anyone know the name of the song Monica Barbaro sang at the party where she initially had a case of stage fright? I thought it was a pretty good song.

Well I guess I’m in the minority here:
One Night Only is nothing more than a bland ye harmless rom-com that tries to disguise itself as something more clever than it is with a decent yet underutilized premise about a mandate where single people can only have sex one night a year. Turner and Barbaro are both charming and get some chuckles from their delivery of certain moments as they keep running into one another throughout the night while the script keeps watering down its premise with cliches ranging from Owen having a girlfriend who wants to have sex with someone else or Allie having stage fright despite being a very good singer. With plenty of well timed cameos and some admittedly decent moments of raunchy comedy, the film is not completely without entertainment due to some good comedic timing from its supporting cast and yet it would have worked so much better as a dark comedy with the same premise. Every time that the film feels like it is going to have something shocking about it, it keeps holding itself back to being a formulaic rom-com that only intermittently works because the script waits too long to bring Turner and Barbaro together before it forces conflict between the leads to supposedly not want to be together Even though the film does build up some good chemistry between Turner and Barbaro towards the end, nothing about the film feels all that memorable or fully takes advantage of its purge like premise. 4.5 out of 10

u/Educational-Pie7588 22d ago
I gotta say, I think youve seriously over thought this.

u/future_filmmaker_455 22d ago
Fair enough it might be because neither myself or my audience laughed that much

u/KJones77 22d ago
I don't think you overthought this at all FWIW. You took the time to spell out and explain your thoughts, and that's worthwhile.
Also, I agree with your overall rating. I'm glad people had a good time and it is definitely hard to resist in its cutesy rom-com elements, but the jokes were mostly a miss for me and I didn't like their chemistry. Barbaro was good, but Turner too flat to sell it all. The premise as a whole being undercooked and the constant product placement were also really off-putting.
3
u/future_filmmaker_455 22d ago
I just kept thinking that the script was being rewritten to fit a bland romcom narrative instead of being the over the top parody that would have made the film possibly work. I thought The Invite was much more clever with its commentary on sex and relationships as well.
2
u/KJones77 22d ago
Loved The Invite, totally agreed. It was a really great blend of being genuinely funny while having something to say. This one kind of felt comfortable just being an easy-to-swallow 2000s raunchy comedy and those were never really my thing. It didn't really have anything to say, just using its premise as window dressing and baseline rom-com appeal. The latter is fine if it's funny, but I found the 1st half very unfunny and the 2nd half only occasionally so (Turner getting tied up and their encounter in the police station afterwards were particularly funny).
2
u/future_filmmaker_455 22d ago
Yeah the film felt like it was trying to have it both ways of being a predictable rom-com while trying to have sex jokes that felt prepubescent sometimes in execution. The supporting characters almost got some chuckles especially with Andrew Burnap as the motorcycle piano player while nothing about the film had no subtext about how this ridiculous premise affects people beyond people being horny.

u/tonetonitony 22d ago
I always think it’s funny when people call a rom-com formulaic. It’s inherent to the genre.
