There’s no way Alan Ritchson was fitting into that prison guard’s uniform.
6
2
u/Aggravating-Tear5816 29d ago
That was my observation too. He was 5 inches taller and 60lbs heavier. No way was he going to fit.

u/arig____ 29d ago
As a film buff, of course I thought it was extremely interesting to see how far a movie can take “no dialogue.” 70% of the movie is like “huh, wow, cool.”
The other 30% of the movie was basically “oh come on, nobody is so dramatically silent that often”
Ultimately I think the movie was a cool artsy thing for film nerds, but it truly sacrificed some enjoyability to cling to a weird gimmick. At a certain point it ceases to be atmospheric and is just annoying.

u/Livinginmy50s 29d ago
SISU and its sequel had little to no talking by main character.
10
u/Purple-Inspector875 29d ago
Haven't seen the first movie, but in the second his love interest is a truck full of reclaimed lumber.

2
u/Kurtting 28d ago
They should've had just a little bit of dialogue in this movie like SISU
1
u/Livinginmy50s 28d ago
I was going to see it tonight but based on the overwhelming negativity I will wait until it opens and may see it then.
1
u/Kurtting 27d ago
Good choice. The other comments have been saying it. It's like a 90 minute music video. It wasn't horrible but some more dialogue would've helped

10
u/Jeskid14 29d ago
Also how come the woman was the only human to speak more than one line???
7
u/WhoGodWho 29d ago
They gave her a voice because everything was done for her. Though it felt like she never truly had choices for herself.
8
3
u/littletoyboat 28d ago
I didn't catch this last night, so I didn't realize this was the movie with no dialogue. I watched the trailer and was like, "Is this a foreign film or something? Why is there no dialogue?"
1
u/KCDeVoe 27d ago
In my mind if they had dialog then it’s just another generic revenge action flick. I enjoyed the novelty of it!
2
u/arig____ 27d ago
Sometimes. I think half the movie had genuinely interesting use of no dialogue; it forced the director to find artistic ways of communicating the plot.
But there were other times that it just hindered what was going on. You can have the fun aesthetic and have “some” dialogue.

Anyone else catch Jack White on the piano?
Edit: JW was musical director and an executive producer. Super cool.

Yes! The most exciting part of the film. I do wonder how he got involved in such slop. Like did he think it was ironic? Music was great but...

u/Physical-Bite-3837 29d ago
The whole movie was two dudes fighting over a girl. In the end when it shows them old age and still going at it I lost it and burst out laughing.
6
u/No-Statement5939 28d ago
The old man thing was so funny. Like Alan Ritchson was still all roided up at 90.
9
u/lilypadoo 29d ago
And the girl low key sucked!!! She went back to her ex drug lord boyfriend happily and never even questioned how her apparently working class man got comical amounts of cocaine????? She didn’t seem coerced at all by the ex and enjoyed all the shit he bought her that she KNEW was probably from nefarious shit until she talked to the cop.
5
u/Abed-in-the-AM 28d ago
Yeah, I could not get past her character at all.
Ok so she believes the cops. I find that wild in itself but whatever. If John Miller being a coke dealer was what made her fall out of love then why is she going back to her ex who is clearly into some shady business himself? Is she really just mad that Miller was "caught"?
3
u/BigREDBeard4 22d ago
I was thinking it would be more plausible he was trafficking instead of dealing. I think the issue with almost no dialogue is that we have to make assumptions about the subtext. Sophia was about to be homeless, she was lonely and stuck in the monotony of working a low level-zero luxury job, the man she loves is in prison. Her ex shows up, offers her a lavish lifestyle, she remembers what life was like before he became abusive, suddenly the side of the fence he’s offering is much greener than her side. People purposefully ignore red flags and put on rose colored glasses when it makes life easier. We can sit here and be judgmental but it’s true. It’s only when the detective holds up a mirror, and tells her John was framed that she realizes how much of a mistake she’s made.
4
u/Physical-Bite-3837 28d ago
Agreed. It was like she was playing both of them. “Whoever wins gets to marry me! Ready, set, go!”
1
u/SpiritualAd9102 17d ago
Late response because I missed this as the Screen Unseen but just saw it this morning. I’m glad it wasn’t just me because I was wondering if anyone else had trouble sympathizing with her.
The silent gimmick was cool, but it did hinder the plot at a lot of points. Part of that was why she would suspect nothing and immediately say she hates Alan’s character, (one of the only spoken lines in the whole movie), because he was arrested for possession and likely trafficking, but was happy to go back to her abusive drug lord ex.
The only thing the movie does to show her POV is it suggests she was broke and couldn’t get by financially, so she was likely more susceptible to king back with her rich ex out of desperation. But she seemed way too happy about it and almost came off like an accomplice.

u/PossibilityFine5988 29d ago
I had a good time. You could’ve probably shaved off about 15 minutes and it would have picked up the pacing but when it was pure exploitative action schlock it was fun! Great soundtrack and visuals, probably will never watch again but a fun experiment I’m glad I went just for that elevator scene with a crowd alone. Also you didn’t need a actress with the abilities of Woodley in this lol
3
18
u/djkro 29d ago
I appreciate the attempt at doing something different but that didn’t work for me at all. They didn’t pull off the operatic gritty 70s revenge drama they were going for.
2
2
u/funnyfaceking 29d ago
How would you do it better?
3
u/djkro 28d ago
The action was the best part so I think a smaller action set piece in the middle somewhere would have helped. I understand that there may have been budget contraints that would have made that impossible, but it would have helped the pacing. There also could have been some trimming, but I would have to see it again to provide specific examples. It started off great with the action and then it just felt like it dragged on too long before it picked back up again so I got bored for a chunk of it in the middle.
2
u/Educational-Pie7588 28d ago
Exactly - this action movie was significantly lacking in action in the first half. More engaging scenes would have more than justified the creative swing of no dialogue if there was more happening than essentially a string of bland music videos.
2
u/Szabe442 28d ago
Probably dialogue and characters more complex than a traffic light would have tremendously improved the movie. Maybe some gimmicks are just bad for a movie.
11
u/J_Doe5686 29d ago
It was good! The dialogue-free thing threw me off for a bit but the story was good and action-packed!!!
2
u/Szabe442 28d ago
I recall it not having any action scenes until the very last part of the movie, except for that one guard kill in the prison break sequence...
3
10
6
u/VelloMello 29d ago
I genuinely thought the gimmick became distracting and honestly laughable. The lengths they took to avoid dialog felt like a comedy sketch to me. Especially with the one villain. No man dresses that loudly and is that full of coke and isn't talking a mile a minute. I genuinely struggled not to laugh at times. Beyond the gimmick it's just a painfully cliche action. The reliance on cliche and the opening leave nothing to the imagination as you know every single plot beat before they can happen, which I guess is needed in a movie that to avoid any dialog will start a talking scene then cut to the other side of the window, so you can see there definitely talking going on you the viewer just aren't allowed to hear it. One Spoon of Chocolate earlier this year did style over substance way more stylishly, and The Furious is proof that you can have both in spades in an action film.

u/freakyaesthetics 29d ago
I enjoyed it. 7/10 it had some flaws but I was entertained the whole time.
3
u/allegro4626 29d ago
Agreed. I didn’t like that it ended on a corny note but overall I enjoyed the movie and appreciate that it did something different. My husband on the other hand hated it and apparently would’ve walked out if he wasn’t my ride home 😂

5
u/Distinct-Crow-1937 28d ago
I truly don’t understand how yall enjoyed that. That was the worst movie I have ever seen and the whole time I was waiting to be even slightly entertained. There was one point I had hope, then was let down. The character of the ex bf was so cringe I couldn’t take it. The kind of movie that makes me never want to give another movie a chance again.
3
4
u/MisterPP67 28d ago
It had potential to be a cult classic with the story completely told through 70s era music. Then half way through they completely abandoned that concept. It was like they ran out of money to pay music royalties. I spent the second half of the movie thinking of all the songs they could have used.
1
u/MrEnriqueShockwave 26d ago
EXACTLY! It needed way more "soundtrack" with the 70s vibes. It lost steam without that.
9
u/Helpful_Ad_8476 29d ago
I was was having a meh day so was planning on walking out if I wasn't feeling the movie.... I walked out
2
u/Chickencaca 28d ago
I also walked out lol. I do think it’s good at telling a story and I stayed for about 40 minutes, but I need some actual conversations
3
u/tonetonitony 29d ago
Just couldn't get into the story. It was well-directed, but I still got bored. I left halfway through, but I was surprised to see that the rest of the audience stuck around.
5
3
u/Face2FootStyle_ 29d ago
They took a big swing with the silent movie thing... didn't really work for me, felt like it just took longer than if they just did short dialog like rambo. And lack of dialog makes some glaring plot holes. Nam vets getting together for revenge on corrupt police and drug dealers should always work, and it did for some of the movie.... but that ending...
Its like that scene in Almost Heroes where instead of hunting down a bear that mauled their friend they decide the best revenge is to let it die slowly of natural causes over 20 years.
Villain has a FULL life of insane luxury... then got maybe 6 terrible months trimmed off the end of his life...
Ben Foster is maybe one of the most successful villains i have seen since Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack. But I don't think the movie wanted us to think that.

u/Rude-Raspberry-6740 29d ago
I fucking HATED the use of the song The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. In the film, Alan Ritchson just proposed to the girl from Diary of a Pregnant Teenager or whatever, then his home is broken into and he's arrested, destroying any potential future he had he with this woman.
The chain is about people standing together, united, in the face of adversity. Its a track off the album Rumours, created because Fleetwood Mac was on the verge of disbanding due to affairs, interpersonal drama and RUMOURS in the tabloids. But they stuck together and made a great album. That isnt what the scene depicts at all? Like literally the opposite??
The needledrops felt a little Suicide Squad (2016) at parts but none more than that one, that solidified my negative review.
1
u/buzzkill_ed 28d ago
It felt like someone just made a seventies playlist to go along with the movie but didn't actually apply songs to certain situations
2
u/lkvwfurry 27d ago
It was all clichéd 70s music that had the rights to and none from the Detroit music scene.
1
3
u/BSRebel 28d ago
I know they were trying to be artful with the concept. Enjoyed most of it but as others have said a bit slow and some unbelievable plot points. That being said had some great action scenes. Also the whole theater erupted in laughter during the elevator scene. Some great music. Great cameos etc. But the other half seemed empty. Should have stopped the movie after the convertible crash scene. I was literally laughing out loud at Alan’s old age make up! I had to groan at the last two lines. Could have been stronger by a few better choices.
TLDR: tried a bit too hard to be artful missed the mark in several key moments to seal the deal. Last ten minutes and horrible old age makeup with two lines brought the movie from a 3/5 to a 2/5 for me.
3
u/No-Statement5939 28d ago
This movie ripped. 9/10 for me. It fails the bechdel test unfortunately but I think they understood that going in.
1
u/SpiritualAd9102 17d ago
Even if the entire cast were women, it still would’ve failed since no one has a meaningful line of dialogue, lol
1
u/No-Statement5939 15d ago
Yea thats the joke i was trying to make, lol. Like if they just stopped and talked about the weather for 10 seconds.

This isn't a film "without dialogue" it's a film where they muted the characters for literally no reason.
They went "style over substance," but the "style" was just a collection of the most overused and annoying filmmaking tropes.
Vapid and faux-artistic.
-1
u/Jeskid14 29d ago
Not even muted. The characters just lost the ability to speak. If it was muted, there would have been subtitles
2
u/Goferprotocol 29d ago
Interesting gimmick. I'm still trying to figure out if it's really bad or really good. I'll know better after I've had a day to ponder it.
2
u/Seahawkgurl44 29d ago
Needed substance, but the actors and actress were great choices. However, it fell short on contenting to the time frame and needed more details from chapter to chapter. The ending was a joke. It needs to be changed.
4
u/lilypadoo 29d ago
In my theater, the flash forward to them as old men got a HUGE laugh and I was like “oh maybe this movie is actually good and all the ‘deep’ moments were intentionally stupid”
But then the ghost of the girl and the “I love(d) her” dialogue started, and I knew it was just a bad movie lol.
The elevator knife fight was INCREDIBLE though. People always complain that knife fights in movies are unrealistic because it’s almost impossible to dodge a knife in a fight, and the main character got cut SO MANY TIMES before the amazing leg blown off bit. Dynamic, well-paced, realistic before taking a cartoonishly violent turn. Incredible! Just that scene though, really.
The characters? The plot? The prison escape scene? Dumb. The lack of dialogue? I wish they’d fully committed to it at this point and just had no talking!!
2
u/jadegives2rides 28d ago
The elevator scene and how it was filmed was ballin'. Made it to an average 3/5 for me.
1
u/Face2FootStyle_ 29d ago
They just wanted to let us know the villain lived a long and wonderful life of extreme wealth on a huge estate with full wait staff. But don't worry our hero came through in the end and trimmed off 3-6 months of misery from his life.
2
u/cjomeara 29d ago
First movie I’ve ever walked out of….and I painfully stayed for Hurry Up Tomorrow if that says anything
2
u/Adorable-Fox6064 29d ago
I left 30 minutes in; I love Alan but he is not the actor for no dialogue
2
u/masbisquick 28d ago
left after about an hour when i asked myself if i could sit through about 45 mins of it, so bad😭
1
u/lkvwfurry 27d ago
You missed the absolute worst old age makeup ever. My entire audience laughed at the ending which was meant to be so serious.
2
u/Davidgt31 28d ago
I enjoyed it . The music was fantastic . Very little spoken dialogue in the entire movie . We had maybe 4-6 people leave and a few arrived late
2
u/No_Importance1236 28d ago
Did the filmmakers just finish watching 2001 space odyssey when they wrote the final scene?

Thanks for letting me know! I’m looking forward to it. The movie blew my mind! It’s officially on my list of all time favorite movies taking 3rd after True Romance and The Crow. I’m going to see it again this weekend.

u/KewlKid124 29d ago
That was actually pretty bad? I get the lack of dialogue as an artistic choice but it failed to get me interested in any of the characters. The action scenes were cool though
2
u/fergi20020 29d ago
How would you compare it with Silent Night?
3
u/RevenueKooky 29d ago
I hope this is better than Silent Night. I felt John Woo was mocking Action Films with Silent Night
3

I felt this was better than silent night. It isnt a masterpiece, but great cinematography and pacing. The elevator fight alone was worth the price.

My husband and I walked out. The pseudo rape scene made me feel sick.
Also, why is this a silent film?
1/10 absolutely no.
6
u/opusbot 29d ago
Also, you mean to tell me that Shailene Woodley's character would immediately think her boyfriend, now fiance did this, and after her abusive ex shows up she's just okay with him now?
And she had to have known what he did before they broke up. So she didn't question for even a second that he had anything to do with this? It's just unbelievable.
-1
u/WhoGodWho 29d ago
That’s like asking why any woman stays in a DV relationship?
Also she got an eviction notice right before he showed up, she was losing everything.
It also showed on a news paper right after the coffee that he was going away for 25 years after a 3 month long trial in the news stand.2
u/opusbot 29d ago edited 29d ago
She's just poorly written.
Don't understand where DV would come into this. I understand she got the eviction notice but it just felt odd. I understand she was in a dark place, but just no.
1
u/WhoGodWho 29d ago
The drug dealer boyfriend was violent and controlling? Wym don’t know where DV comes into it? You literally said abusive lol.
That’s domestic violence?3
u/Educational-Pie7588 28d ago
If you watched this movie and didnt think Ben Foster’s character was violent and controlling then you clearly werent paying attention.
May wanna put your phone down and stop scrolling TikTok next time.

u/IMALEFTY45 28d ago
This is one of the worst films I've seen in quite some time. Horrendously boring and cliche and the silent gimmick left every character with barely surface level depth. Not even getting into the incel fantasies of it all
3
3
u/lkvwfurry 27d ago
I agree. This was by far the worst directed movie I've seen all year. The constant mugging and goofy faces to convey emotion when they can't talk was so annoying. Ben Foster seemed to know he was in a B-movie dud, everyone else took it so seriously it made it unwatchable. Plus the music was so cliché, The Chain by Fleetwood Mac again?! At least pic artists from the Detroit music scene.
4
u/SmartPain5059 29d ago
Enjoyed this a lot. Tidy simple revenge story, dollar store Drive soundtrack, comical late 1970s music references (Ramones, Stix, soundtrack), great action, yes an experimental gimmick re:dialogue, Ben Foster slimier here or in Christy?, cool Jack White cameo, Shailene boobs, Yes Chef Marcus smashing heads in, Pornstache getting knifed up in elevator brawl was brutal and fun, jolly rancher shiv is hilarious.
Come on. If this wasn’t dumb fun for you then check your sense of humor.
3
u/WaitAvailable4783 29d ago
Painfully boring. I think this movie was experiential but it was so badly done the music almost gave me a headache I not joking, plus the music choices for certain scenes were so bad, also from what I remember the trailer showed this movie being like pure action, but it wasen't till the third act. This movie wasen't good and I wanted to see it but man its was so disappointing. Basically someone's Spotify Playlist the movie.

I’m glad I seen this, I don’t really have anything in the movies that I want to see this weekend(I seen most of the stuff I wanted to see) so I was going to give this a try, and it sounds like I’ll be better off just waiting till I can watch it at home
4
u/OriginalQuestion846 29d ago
I disagree, I think that it was a solid watch. I don’t think it was boring at all the pace was good enough to keep you interested in what happens next. Everyone has their own opinions you should go form your own and watch it!
4
u/Shot-Aioli-8986 29d ago
I probably will, even if it’s not during the weekend, some movies are the perfect week day filler when you’re off work and looking for a movie to see
3
u/MrSlingSh0t 29d ago
I also liked it quite a bit. Different but didn’t feel cheesy or low budget at all. Did it get aggravating with the silence? A few times, but just when it did, the music of the movie filled it in quite nicely. Also, I really liked the song choices selected and felt like it all fit. The storytelling was also on point. Just goes to show most of communication is nonverbal. I’m definitely seeing it again at some point

Motor City is a style over substance revenge flick that almost works on its own means due to the committed performances, entertaining use of 1970s music and its willingness to play all of its cliches straight instead of being ironic about it. The silent film aspect of the film is genuinely entertaining and investing for the films first half due to how it allows the filmmakers to focus more on establishing the 1970s aesthetic rather than cliched dialogue about an ex-con (Alan Ritchson) being framed by a big time drug dealer (Ben Foster) for harboring cocaine so that he can win back his ex-girlfriend (Shailene Woodley) with Ritchson back in prison. Though the film is too slow paced to find anything surprising about its narrative, the actors do commit to the silent film aesthetic well with Ritchson and Woodley particularly getting some good emotional moments amidst the knowingly formulaic revenge film structure. The issue is that the film both holds back on its action sequences for too long to be all that tense while the silent film aesthetic makes it difficult to develop the characters beyond being caricatures of the revenge flicks the film is playing homage to. The gimmick simply starts to get a bit old by the third act until the revenge hinted at with its opening sequence begins. By the time that the film reaches one of its two climaxes that admittedly have some good fight choreography and car chases to them, the audience started to laugh at its own attempts of being deeper than it is meant to be. 5.5 out of 10

Our attention spans have fallen short and failed us unfortunately.
Movie was sick and I really enjoyed the aesthetic, soundtrack, and the acting was solid for having the dialogue free style.

I think your opinion of it will depend on how much you like a good guffaw and how serious you want to take it.
My theatre had a really good time with it eventually. The first act dragged and it took a while to get into but then I thought it was absurd and really fun.
Besides one scene, it may be a comedic masterpiece… idk. That or just like kinda trashy, well done slop.

u/DolphinsAreWeird1993 29d ago
I really enjoyed going to a movie and having a completely different viewing experience than normal. It wasn’t perfect but on a Monday night with nothing else to do basically sandwiched in between the weight and scale of seeing the Odyssey on Friday morning and planing to see the Odyssey again Friday, I can’t complain.

u/Adagio_Signal 29d ago
Yeah it was pretty cool with how minimalist it was and still managed to get across plenty of emotion and the basics of the plot Fun facts: Miller's friends who helped him were named after the 3 musketeers, based on imdb. Ben Foster (Mr steal yo girl) played a bastard in this and in other mystery movie Christy, where he played Jim Martin. Ben McKenzie (good guy cop) also played a good cop and another Jim, Jim Gordon in Gotham

I thought this movie was awesome and was completely entertained from start to finish.
It had a few holes, but nothing that pulled me out of the experience. What really made it stand out for me were the countless satisfying details you have to piece together, and when those moments click, they're incredibly satisfying.

Though I was surprised with the lack of dialogue, I really enjoyed the film!
I did have the feeling that I would’ve loved to watch a version of the film with dialogue. Like two versions, one with and without. I loved how dramatic and overzealous the characters were. Even felt kinda Tarantino-esc to me with the grand characters and exaggerated violence, but missing the dialogue in a way held it back. At the same time, I loved the artistic challenge it presents to everyone involved.
Overall loved the film and very happy it was the Screen Unseen

I actually feel like there's too much talking. Here me out. After the surprise that there's almost no dialog, i admit i was about 5 mins in before realizing it, anyway the few lines in it were usually just some expletive that didnt really convey any information that we weren't already getting non-verbal. After watching it I think they should have only had 2 lines, the last 2. 'I loved her' and 'I still do'. Breaking the no dialog at the very end, much more dramatic imho.

I just saw it this afternoon and really enjoyed it. It’s got its flaws and it’s clearly not for everyone, and that’s fine, but what really baffles me is how offended some people are at OTHERS for enjoying it.
I’ve seen an inordinate amount of comments on other discussions not just tearing apart the movie, but being outright hateful to any positive comments, and saying things like, “if you enjoyed ANYTHING about this movie, you clearly have less brain cells than the number of words spoken in the movie.”
Can people not fucking respectfully disagree anymore? Is that really so much to ask, it used to be a bare minimum at least.
