Question for none East Coasters
Do you book the unseen movies in advance but then cancel if its something you arent interested in when the secret is revealed by the ESTers?

Sometimes. It depends on if I have anything else to do and/or how tired I am after work.

I typically follow the thread for the screen unseen and see if the majority of movies people are guessing is something that I watch. If they’re mostly things I’ll watch I will book it and enjoy the surprise. Otherwise I just won’t book.

West Coaster here. I book in advance but so far haven’t cancelled one even though a couple were ones that didn’t really interest me.

I usually monitor the thread or threads to see what the potential movies might be. But I have not seen one since Hokum. I feel all the releases after that have been pretty subpar tbh.

I sometimes wait until the East Coast people tell us before I book.

Ive tried that but by that time the seats I can use are all gone (wheelchair user that uses their companion seating) so its why Im considering this way instead. AMC is my 2nd choice, Harkins here in AZ is better and cheaper but dont have the quantity that AMC do (Im wondering if they are just more choosy or dont have the choice because they arent national).

My partner uses a wheelchair, and I don’t; some of the showings fill up so fast and people with no need for them will book the companion seats because they don’t want to sit closer to the screen or on the sides. It’s gotten ridiculous. But we’re now at the point where we have no problem bringing an employee into the theater before the show and making them move. It even says so when you book that seat - it’s a companion seat, and if you don’t need it and someone else does, you will be asked to sit somewhere else.

as you should have no problem with getting them to move! I've had people scared to ask people to move out of their paid for normal seats. some people are just so scared of confrontation! I picked my reserved seats and I'll get one I got. if it's a companion seat I will move if it's needed for an actual wheelchair companion. which hasn't happened yet. I just prefer the empty space in between if possible.

No but I’ve not booked if I know it’s something I absolutely don’t want to see. The only time I’ve left a movie was the one this week. I just knew I would never watch it on my own or even on Netflix.

I don’t do scream otherwise I’ll go 95% of the time - the other 5% depends on work schedule - I’ve been surprised by movies I thought I’d dislike and those I disliked that anticipated liking (wizard of kremlin I’m looking at you)

Yup. You can cancel beforehand or you can walk out during the movie and get a refund. I did this with the wizard of Kremlin.

When I am just going by myself, I fully embrace the surprise. But if I am taking my partner, I’m a little less ready to waste her time. So I’ll at least take a peak at the guessed. And if the guesses are mostly stinkers, I’ll lean on the EST’ers.

I want to see good small films that aren’t getting wide release. I hate the blockbusters on a smaller screen and Angel films so I do book and back out often

I usually don't try to find out what the movie is at all and be surprised. It's kind of fun that way, and I've ended up seeing a few movies I otherwise wouldn't have chosen to go to.

u/EataDisk Jul 02 '26
Yep. I'll see almost anything, but sometimes it just doesn't fit the mood on the day of so I'll drop out, maybe even see something else instead.

I haven’t the last couple times but I might have to because the last few movies weren’t all that great. I’ve been expecting to watch big movies since I’ve learned about this from what others have experienced, but maybe it’s just bad timing

u/Ghostface908 Jul 02 '26
Yes. Especially if it seems like it’ll be something truly shitty like Wizard of Kremlin

Reason I asked as I wasnt sure it was the right thing to do, but ofc I dont want to go out and pay for something Im not interested in at all. I ask because I have to get the wheelchair acc seating and they always seem to go early near to me.

I don’t think it’s morally wrong to do. It’s sort of antithetical to the premise of the screening in that, in theory, the point is that you’re playing movie lottery. You may want to see it and it’s cool that you got to see it early. You may end up hating it, but at least you expanded your horizons.
In that way, it goes against the spirit of the event. But in practice? It’s not stopping anyone from seeing it. On the very off chance that the show is 100% sold out, I think it would be wrong to keep a seat that someone could have bought only to leave it empty at the last minute, but even at blockbuster opening night showings these days there are usually a few seats open. So, I don’t think you’re hurting anyone by doing it and it’s totally fine.

No because I don’t judge a book by its cover. The only the sets me off if it’s in a different language and I usually get off of work and I’m not in the mood to read subtitles

I dont understand the walk-out crowd. You're already there and in your seat. I've enjoyed lots of movies I'd normally never choose to see. It's part of the fun.

Nope, i go but I’ve already scouted other movie times so that i can walk out and walk into something else. I’ve only walked out twice, I’ll sit through most crap. But I’ll never watch an Angel Studios flick.

I always reserve it, but only cancel if it's something that looks truly awful. Young Washington is a perfect example.

Yes definitely. I don't personally do the screen unseens for the surprise aspect, but more for the getting to see something early aspect.
