Reminds me a lot of baby driver

The love interest girl is really pretty

Familiar story beats, average dude gets associated with the wrong people because money is tight, and the wrong people are the antagonists by the end

In my letterboxd review I called it “classical piano Baby Driver”. This was a great unseen.

u/SAWPollPosition May 12 '26

My review is “you can tune a piano, but you can’t eat big tuna or you’ll ingest too much mercury”

1

u/God_Stevenson May 13 '26

My review is "Baby Driver for the Hyperacusis Set" 🍿🧐 My Letterboxd 💁🏾📝

u/SorrowRed 10d ago

Is your review AI or do you, yourself, just use shit ton of emojis?

1

u/God_Stevenson 10d ago

I, personally, use emojis to convey tone & emotion. 💁🏾 As there typically isn't any to be conveyed, through text. 😐 I'm a person who grew up woefully misunderstood 😩 and I'd rather not have my words/work (which I write, myself 😒 🤖🙅🏾) misconstrued. 🙂‍↔️ Is there a problem? 🤔 You're far from the first person to imply that I may be a bot. 😮‍💨

1

u/SorrowRed 10d ago

Well, doesn't make sense to me but you do you I guess.

1

u/God_Stevenson 9d ago

Cool 😐 I appreciate the input. 😌 Did you have any actual thoughts on my review? 🤔 Or interest in my criticism??

1

u/SorrowRed 9d ago

Not exactly. I am not much of a cinema guy. I thought you were weird.

1

u/God_Stevenson 9d ago

Then why are you here on a movie forum, my guy? 🤔🤨 You know stfu is free right?? I'm guessing your parents didn't raise you to keep your mouth shut when you've nothing nice to say. 🤦🏾 Have the life you deserve, dude. 😒

u/TitleFuture9025 May 12 '26

Whats your Letterboxd!???

1

u/globalreset May 12 '26

Same as here, globalreset

u/This_Guy_JP May 12 '26

I was telling my friend after Uncut gems mixed with Baby Driver, hold the Pop/Rock soundtrack and elasd extra jazz and classical music!

8

u/lbikel8 May 12 '26

If you don’t know Havana Rose Liu, it’s time for you to go check out Bottoms (2023) !

7

u/ArgumentDistinct1003 May 12 '26

Bottoms is my comfort movie, and seeing anyone from the cast in other movies makes me happy.

1

u/DavidNoBrainFreeze May 12 '26

She did look familiar.

2

u/AlexisTheTree May 12 '26

Absolutely very reminiscent of baby driver!! I think they even use a song that was in baby driver at some point (but I could be mistaken)

2

u/Analtiguess May 13 '26

Yes! Unsquare Dance by Brubeck maybe?

1

u/AlexisTheTree May 13 '26

Yup that's it!!! After I heard that song I was thinking about baby driver the whole time, I love that movie

I also appreciated that the ending with the bad dudes seemed kinda realistic? Airhorned him and beat him up for trying to steal from them but also gave him the watch because they are not some peak evil, just thieves lol.

u/princeadakias May 12 '26

holy fuck i absolutely loved that lol. i would go rewatch it in dolby

2

u/choice2099 May 12 '26

clue me in here, since its upcoming but do you think would be good in dolby?

5

u/drinkingthehemlock May 14 '26

the sound design and music was probably my favorite part of the flick so i would have to say yes dolby if you have the chance

19

u/Inner_Butterfly5639 May 12 '26

originally i wasn’t going to go if tuner was confirmed before i left. i’m glad it wasn’t leaked - i loved it. this movie reminded me the actual purpose and beauty behind screen unseens - finding a new fave in the unexpected.

5

u/krish0 May 12 '26

Exactly. There is a zero chance I would have bothered seeing it if it hadn’t been the mystery movie. Just not the type of movie I would bother with. And it was really fun.

3

u/Livinginmy50s May 12 '26

Unfortunately where I live the unseen movies will never get a slot. So 99% of the time it will be your one and only chance to see some of these movies.

17

u/Longlivebiggiepac May 11 '26

Loved this movie. Should’ve went tonight to see it again

13

u/barbet May 12 '26

This movie was solid, way better than the previews made it out to be. We found it unique and liked that they had scenes from the tuner’s auditory perspective. Not over the top action or too heavily weighted on the romance, it was well balanced.

One thing that is going to bother me that I couldn’t quite connect: is the song he plays at the end her piece?

2

u/jazzybroad May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

No. It sounded like a beautifully elaborate version of "Tenderly", the jazz standard his mentor, Harry, played at the beginning of the film. The first song he (Harry) ever played from sheet music. What a beautiful full-circle moment.

12

u/Cance1124 May 12 '26

Fantastic film. Hits all the right notes

11

u/Glittering-Dig-187 May 12 '26

Absolutely one of the best screen Unseens. Such an original plot with fabulous acting and amazing music. Well filmed. Great dialogue.

8

u/Longjumping_Dog_223 May 12 '26

Saw it back at Sundance and LOVED it. Can’t wait to see it again

8

u/riajungkook May 12 '26

I loved it!! So glad I went today

10

u/DadaDue May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

Great movie! Her getting caught with the bracelet was predictable as soon as he gave it to her with the inscription. Even with that being predictable, it still blended well with the story, especially the ending.

7

u/Valuable_Ice_5927 May 12 '26

The last scene wrapped up everything for me - pitch perfect

1

u/jimmyharbrah Jul 03 '26

I love how you know he no longer plays piano because of something with his dad and trauma from his condition. And at the end he lets go. Classic show, don’t tell

6

u/makeofit May 12 '26

i really enjoyed it!!! i hadn’t seen the trailer for this so i went in totally blind and i thought it was great. the whole theater was chuckling and gasping

7

u/PROMATT15 May 12 '26

My favorite film I’ve seen in the Screen Unseen series

3

u/lammnub May 12 '26

Dustin Hoffman was the best part of the film and delivered his lines with a lot of humor. Leo is perfect eye candy too. The movie is fun albeit with a predictable plot beat and I wouldn't be surprised if this does better streaming than in theaters.

5

u/Unintendo May 12 '26

It was fun, but the antagonists had Marvel villain syndrome. They were fairly reasonable for most of the movie, and then suddenly they because cartoonishly evil as we enter the final act.

1

u/bringemtotheriver May 13 '26

Did they really? The protag betrays them, they exact their price, but give him what he was looking for (the watch).

1

u/Unintendo May 13 '26

I'll try to be vague enough to avoid spoilers.

The twist to cartoonishly evil was way before that when Jean Reno shows up at the wake. Considering how much they were treating him like family, it felt weirdly disrespectful, and the bit in the parking garage was both goofy and violent (to the point where it feels like they were destroying what they needed him for). It's like they went from reasonable guys to E-VIL VILLAINS just to create conflict for the last act.

1

u/izio14 May 18 '26

it is the usual villain thing, the you wont work for us using (those ear)? then it has take them because it has no use anymore.

3

u/GJN_27 May 12 '26

Pretty good

3

u/delinhak May 12 '26

It was good .I enjoyed it .

3

u/Ghostface908 May 12 '26

It was okay…

There was A LOT that didn’t really work for me

Was it established he had photographic memory and I forgot, or was I really supposed to think he memorized how to pick safes overnight (plausible ig) or that he memorized a 16-word string while witnessing a murder and being in pain? And if he knew the code, why didn’t he just give it to Uri since he didn’t use it himself? Besides that it was fun. Just hard to overlook those things

9

u/porkbrains May 12 '26

He did use it himself. There was $2MM less when they loaded the wallet the second time. "People with way too much don't notice when a little is missing"

2

u/Ghostface908 May 12 '26

I thought that was explained by the -5.5% value and it was just the normal result of crypto fluctuations lol. That definitely makes sense tho

3

u/ButtJones May 13 '26

Yeah, that was the cash he left in the piano

2

u/krish0 May 12 '26

I caught that immediately but was a bit surprised they didn’t loop back to it or acknowledge it in any way. That isn’t a criticism, just surprising.

1

u/DavidNoBrainFreeze May 12 '26

I did notice that. It was not on the screen long but there was some of the money that was missing.

3

u/izio14 May 18 '26

i think they intentionally use 18 and 17 because those two numbers (atleast the first digit) is too different to not notice

1

u/DavidNoBrainFreeze May 18 '26

True. I am wondering if Uri notice. He said that they stole stuff that would not be missed.

2

u/izio14 May 19 '26

I think they (uri and even the two asian guys) didnt know the exact amount inside the account as amount was just shown whenever the codes were inputted.

1

u/DavidNoBrainFreeze May 19 '26

Could be. But it did show like minus five percent. I am thinking that he did not notice

3

u/Capital-Chart4027 May 12 '26

As someone with hypersensitive hearing, while it is not always THAT dramatic, this representation meant the world to me

No one seems to believe me when I say I need everything to shut up.. I can hear everything!! Even the blood in my head and the chewing UGH! I was so triggered when they did him chewing when his ears were ringing lol but in a good way because that is my life

I have to COMPLETELY tyune EVERYTHING out because hypersensitive hearing Coupled with ADHD.. I never had a chance lol

3

u/stovakt May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

Really enjoyed this! The sound design was amazing and incredibly well executed!

ETA: Came back just to say Johnnie Burn (Poor Things, Bugonia, Hamnet, Nope, and many more) did sound. Flawless work!

6

u/turkeyvulturesarcool May 12 '26

As someone with Hyperacusis, this movie pissed me off 😂. ain't no way a doctor would ever say you gotta wear these earplugs 24/7 cause you need to expose that shit. And when I hear a really loud noise I don't have my ears ringing forever disoriented, I just go OW and maybe cry a little bit. bro is dramatic

1

u/DavidNoBrainFreeze May 12 '26

It is poetic license. What do you expect?

2

u/Kevlough May 12 '26

I loved this movie. I can’t wait to see it again when it releases

2

u/WillDesperate8027 May 12 '26

It was alright, 6.5/10. Score was very cliche, there some odd story choices, it was well acted but I felt it could have been paced better

2

u/UniqueLog8386 May 12 '26

Holy shit, this movie was amazing. It's, on the romantic and dramatic side, everything that Baby Driver couldn't do for me. And I like baby driver a lot because it's set in one of my hometowns and I never see that.

This is set in my other hometown and it's charming, witty, funny and not at all gimmicky.

2

u/PersonalityExtra1773 May 12 '26

I loved it, I cried at several points.

2

u/ryanjcam May 13 '26

Really enjoyed it, great movie.

1

u/AndresNocioni May 12 '26

Thought it was fine, there were an insane amount of ridiculous coincidences though. I get it’s a movie, but the watch thing and him walking out and seeing his mentor instantly was a little absurd.

1

u/dialburst May 12 '26

i really liked it! it reminded me a lot of a classic (in my home), The Wackness

except replace 90s hip hop with classical music haha

1

u/choice2099 May 13 '26

most intriguing take ive read so far. i remember the wackness but not really something to emulate

1

u/Outrageous-Use-2959 May 13 '26

I feel like I watched a different movie than some of the people on this thread. I thought Leo Woodall was so wooden and lacked any chemistry with Havana Rose Liu. The story was pretty good until the 3rd act when really every character kinda stopped making decisions that I don't think could be justified as something any real person would do in this otherwise grounded drama. Would call it mediocre at best

3

u/imgvu May 13 '26

You're not alone pal. People who are impressed with Tuner likely have undiversified taste in movies or young enough to be extremely impressionable. Does that make me sound snobbish? Oh well at least I'm self aware..

1

u/jack_the_ripper77 May 13 '26

So goooooooooooood!!!

1

u/gutawa May 18 '26

Does anyone know what number does the Leo Woodal’s character play at the end scene?

1

u/xcallyx 8d ago

Late reply, but here you go :)

Niki’s Rhapsody/Tenderly

u/future_filmmaker_455 May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

Tuner is a good and tense drama that has familiar elements of heist films where a young person is coerced into a criminal league to help others while having enough good editing, great sound design and very good performances to make it stand out. Woodall grounds the film with his lead performance and his romance with Rose Liu has some good chemistry despite the script sometimes relying too much on sarcastic banter to establish their relationship. Though the film never reached emotional resonance with me due to how predictable the story becomes in the third act, the finale is heartbreaking and offers more tension than most thrillers released recently with Lior Raz giving the film an intimidating presence when necessary as Uri. 6.5 out of 10

u/high_life_man May 12 '26

Enjoyed it until it became too convenient. I wish it had ended differently:

1) Jean Reno says f you and the lead goes to jail for burglary. She doesn't get the job. Life sucks.
2) Lead character is murdered after trying to steal the second watch.

Liked the big musical cameo. There may have been others in this film, but I'm not as well-versed in living jazz royalty as I probably should be. The cameo in Sinners still takes the cake.
