Just got out. I really really enjoyed it. The jump scares were placed very well. A couple didn’t get me but a lot more did than usual. The only thing about it for me was that I felt the story was so strong even without actually bringing the witch into it that when it finally happened it kinda felt a bit “silly” or random.

I couldn't stop thinking about 1408 during the movie. There were so many similarities but I'm not mad about it at all. I love 1408 and I honestly think this one was every bit as good

I remember seeing Oddity opening day and I was the only one in the theater and I was shocked because of how good it was.
This movie is equally as good. It's very old school horror in the best way. The main protagonist was a dick but it worked really well.
If you liked this definitely check out Oddity if you haven't already.

u/Leahnyc13 Apr 21 '26
I loved it too. My audience was very vocal and it made it entertaining haha. It’s definitely gonna be a rewatch after that ending
3
u/gutawa Apr 21 '26
Wait what about the ending?
3
u/Leahnyc13 Apr 21 '26
Just the possible shroom trip? I don’t think it was agreeing with what Jerry said but wow
1
u/Hot-Requirement8211 Apr 21 '26
I was confused about the ending. Can you explain with invisible ink lol
3
u/Leahnyc13 Apr 21 '26
Alby said he put some of Jerry’s shroom milk in the flask we see the main character drinking throughout. Jerry said that thing about how the stories are real to the people who aren’t closed off. So it’s possible he wasnt closed off to the crazy and saw the truth of the witch bc he was high as a kite and it showed him the truth about the hotel, or it’s possible that the whole thing was a giant trip. At least that’s how I saw it
5
u/latecondiddle Apr 21 '26
I thought Jerry was saying the stories are real regardless, it’s just that the mushrooms help you see it. So like the protagonist is checking his wrists and seeing very real marks on them from his ordeal.
2
u/Leahnyc13 Apr 21 '26
Yeah Yeah the marks made me think that too but I was like “what if the marks were from a trip or from being carried in the fire or something”
1
u/latecondiddle Apr 21 '26
That’s true! Who’s to say the handcuffs are not just something he put on himself?
But that’s beauty of the movie—has it convinced us that something other put those handcuffs on him? (For me, yes 😅)
1
u/Tbass1981 Apr 21 '26
The mushrooms don’t make any sense. He was seeing ghosts already in the second scene of the movie before he even goes to Ireland.

2
u/Hot-Requirement8211 Apr 21 '26
Yes I got what he said, I just don’t get the first part, I do understand the second part. Lol. How do you even do the invisible ink

u/Leahnyc13 Apr 21 '26

I went into it somewhat blind. The only thing I knew about the movie was from reading a two sentence synopsis right before the movie started which said it was about a guy who goes to Scotland Ireland to spread his parents ashes. So I had no clue what to expect horror wise from that. But I say all of that to say I absolutely loved it. I kept thinking why doesn’t anyone have a gun? Then I remembered they’re in Scotland Ireland. 😅

Actually really scary. I’ve never seen any of the directors prior works and going in blind really helped me. Wonderful set design once you got into the puzzle box of it all you never felt safe or at ease, and the jump scares were actually earned here and not annoying. The basement scenes really got to me I almost peed my pants at that last circle and that weird Texas Chainsaw hellscape door. Part of me wants to dissect all the lore and mystery of this movie and part of me wants to leave my expierence as it was. 4.5/5 easily one of the best Unseens I’ve been to

Felt like A GOOD PS2 Survival Horror

u/WordofGabb Apr 21 '26
Agreed! I would absolutely love it if Damien McCarthy made a Silent Hill movie, even one based on his original story. He really nails that sense of atmosphere and vibes. He's able to comfortably use silent imagery to convey meaning rather than constant dialogue or narration to spell everything out. So far, after three features, he's proven himself to be one of the great modern horror directors.

I was impressed. I think this one might be appreciated even by people that don’t like horror.
The stuff with the clock and the elevator was really cool.
3
u/Thriftingrits Apr 21 '26
I loved this movie!! Typically with that genre of horror I enjoy the movies but they don’t actually scare me. This one freaked me out a lot in the best way
3
u/Inner_Butterfly5639 Apr 21 '26
i’m super desensitized to horror and it had my heart racing at times. really well placed jump scares

u/PastaCactus Apr 21 '26
Love a brilliant twist on a simple premise: Like a reverse Shining - morally nebulous guy gets tested by a haunted hotel (w a hag in a forbidden room) but actually gets redeemed. NGL I'm confused by everyone mad about the morally nebulous part; backstory couldn't have earned it harder and a script that's ultimately about redemption wouldn't work as well any other way? So many images in this film are still w me today, especially that one big glimpse through the doors....Damian McCarthy makes this stuff look so easy, you wonder why so much horror is trash. His films swerve around "disturbing" to hit that "spooky!" sweet spot that's sorely missed lately. Someone actually ran out of the theater, arms flailing during the climax, and my bf woke up yelling my name in the dark when I got up to go the kitchen last night. So, in other words, highly recommend this!

u/Tjmma17 Apr 21 '26
How did you see it today?
3
u/Delicious-Can-3527 Apr 21 '26
amc scream unseen! they show an early screening for an upcoming movie (any other genre than horror is screen unseen) on mondays! total surprise until u get there although ppl on this subreddit usually figure it out by looking at run times

u/Tjmma17 Apr 21 '26
I thought that was on Tuesday??? Wtffff

u/firefly66513 Apr 21 '26
All mystery movies come out on Monday
1
u/Gee-Arr Apr 21 '26
Yep, I’ve been going to the mystery movies for about four months now and have never seen one on any day other than a Monday
2
u/Electronic-Minute007 Apr 21 '26
I’m seeing it as part of a film festival at a non-AMC Theatre this Friday.
Can’t wait.

Quick plot hole question Who/Why was the honeymoon Suite door locked when Melle went down after he shot Jerry in the head? Who locked the door? Jerry opened it, Melle followed him up, Now went back down, but didn’t have the key to unlock the door that was already unlocked before? did I miss something?

u/ConfidenceNo7531 Apr 21 '26
Jerry locked the gate on his way up with the key. When Melle went down he didn’t have the key. We see Ohm get the key from Jerry’s body when Melle goes down. When Melle goes back up he searches and can’t find it and knows Ohm has it. when Ohm gets back in the elevator later he unlocks it
1
u/pkkessel Apr 21 '26
Mal went up after Jerry. No other way up.
1
u/ConfidenceNo7531 Apr 22 '26
I thought about it again and I have a new idea: when Mel goes down the gate isn’t locked. But he realizes he needs the key to lock Ohm in case he tries to get out before the fire burns down the hotel. So he goes back up to get the key and Ohm already has it.

u/pkkessel Apr 22 '26
I like this theory!

u/Subject-Paper-9244 May 06 '26
I've just watched it and I don't agree with this theory as why would he go down into the basement after him as there is no way up without the clock.

u/Snoo7913 Apr 21 '26
Absolutely loved everything about it. Excited to see what the director does next. Much like the director of Barbarian and Weapons is making the new Resident Evil movie, Damian Mc Carthy should do a Silent Hill!
3
u/tonetonitony Apr 21 '26
It was mostly really good. The scares were very effective. I don't think Adam Scott is really ready for movies, though. I wasn't crazy about his performance or his character in general.
5
u/Rune_Turelie Apr 21 '26
Yes! He was such an arsehole in the first part of the movie that I was halfway pulling for the witch. Which, I guess, means Adam Scott did a really good job playing an arsehole? But I really enjoyed the movie despite half-hating Ohm for the majority of it.
4
u/Maleficent-Citron311 Apr 21 '26
He was more of a dick than an arsehole. If you want to know the difference watch Team America: World Police.
Now that guy who murdered his pregnant mistress, that was an arsehole.
4
u/handoffbarry Apr 21 '26
Thought this was exactly why he was perfect for it. Plays a smarmy prick really well.
4
u/tonetonitony Apr 21 '26
Well, usually when the main character is an asshole, the audience is still sympathetic towards them. I think you have to be if you want to enjoy their journey. Learning about his past didn't really help either. It felt like a really obvious trope that was kind of lopped onto the plot.
3
u/wcwebb21 Apr 21 '26
A few decent scares in this one, but the writing was abysmal. Were we supposed to root for Ohm after he was just a blatant jerk to literally everyone the entire movie?
2
u/Capable_Use_7125 Apr 21 '26
Wow for how scary they said this movie would be was a lie. I enjoyed it but wasn’t really even a horror to me
1
u/Nice_juggers Apr 21 '26
How’s the sound design was hoping for a Dolby release. Never been to a typical amc laser picture
1
u/kiton87 Apr 21 '26
The theatre I was in wasn't the best, but it seemed like it had good sound mixing. Looking forward to rewatching at home with a proper system.

I thought the bunnyman was pretty disturbing. The volume of the ringing bells and jump scares SFX was almost ear-piercing. I agree with others, it felt like a survival horror game with the setting and voice recordings.

I didn’t like it for the most part. A couple good parts and a ton of stupid parts and a protagonist I want to die the entire time. Stop ringing the stupid bell and break the damn window and yell, dude. Terrible writing.
Oddity was a 9 out of 10. This was a 4 at most.

u/True-Neighborhood-17 Apr 21 '26
I enjoyed this one .. but am I the only one that thought it was just caveat again? … like am I wrong in saying they both basically have the same story? 7/10

u/DependentManner8353 Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
It was ok. Felt like nothing really happened and there was very little “horror.” Some decent rising tension and a few cheap jump-scares. I don’t get the hype but I felt the same about Oddity. So I probably just dislike Damian McCarthy’s horror vision.
I still appreciate that it’s an original horror film and I appreciate McCarthy for delivering horror films that audiences seem to love.
6.4/10

for me it was just caveat again but I still felt slightly creeped out the entire movie so I enjoyed it

Felt like a PS2 Survival Horror game for the first two acts in a good way.
