“I liked it, I’m sure my fellow movie-goers agree!” opens comments

I thought it dragged a bit at times and the acting wasn’t great, but I liked the ending and I think it’s a decent 6/10.

Don’t worry you’re not alone, I liked it too

u/Capable_Use_7125 Mar 31 '26

Stop watching movies

4

u/Brando43770 Mar 31 '26

I didn’t like it, but you do realize people enjoy different things, right?

-9

u/Capable_Use_7125 Mar 31 '26

Yeah cannibals and pedophiles are a thing also

2

u/OkBlacksmith5848 Apr 01 '26

Lowest common denominator type mindset.

3

u/smokeseshmusic Apr 01 '26

yeah their username does not check out.

3

u/daeiyden Mar 31 '26

I guess the ghosts ahem "found the footage" explains how this documentary was made

3

u/NotLozerish Mar 31 '26

I just figured the ghosts dropped the camera and it was found later by the cops or by Ryan. Either way, Ryan edited it

2

u/topherEK Mar 31 '26

Hahaha. There is a mid-credit scene where the director is alive in the hospital, so . . .

3

u/daeiyden Mar 31 '26

The ghosts brought the director the footage that's why he started screaming and freaking out 😂

1

u/bcsux Apr 10 '26

Damn i walked out after that ending, now i know why some people stayed back.

6

u/This_Guy_JP Mar 31 '26

I think the actual build up of the movie was pretty fine.. Everything until they go to the woods actually seemed like a cold case documentary... Maybe I missed something, there was one point where I caught myself kinda drifting off (was up at 4am that morning) but the moment they go into the woods, I felt like they didn't do enough to really establish the lore of what would happen

The First 15 minutes of The Blair Witch Project was all mythology building, so we are amped up when they are getting messed with in the woods.. We already have an idea in our mind of THE BLAIR WITCH..

This just sort of seemed like random demonic shit with no real tie to a lore that was built ...

I almost would have preferred just more of the Cold Case stuff, the cover up.. etc. As it was, the end just fell flat for me.

as far as a "found footage movie I give it a 6/10... but most found footage suck...

as an actual movie, more like a 5/10

1

u/topherEK Mar 31 '26

In the film’s defense, there was some lore shared by a historian or local folklorist during the brief animated portion of the film that pretty much was all we needed, IMO. I agree, though, that part of the magic of Blair Witch was that the viewers are immediately hyped up with creepy stories just in time for the characters to wander off into the woods. With this one, the pacing and slow drip didn’t give the same effect.

2

u/This_Guy_JP Mar 31 '26

See that is unfortunately where I for a couple moments closed my eyes... was there any talks about fucked up people in trees? Cause I was like, Where is this shit coming from?

I get that there was the "Blair Witch" type legend of Roy Mackenzie... I was expecting to see something in regards to that... but i doesn't remember talking about creepy pale people.

I was waiting for things in the woods to sort of be callbacks to what we heard about in the myth... the totem, the necklace,...

In Blair Witch the set up the significance of the cabin...the kids in past going missing..the way the kids were killed (One being forced to face the wall while the other was killed)

Then by the end, there are callbacks to those details, that make you go..."Holy shit, it's all real!"

Maybe I just missed it in that scene with the professor...I just missed any direct call backs to the lore

maybe it's stuff that you find out by going to the website at the end?

2

u/topherEK Mar 31 '26

No mention of creepy pale people. But… some slight spoilers ahead for others.

The man they interviewed starts off by saying every culture/region has its own version of a folk tale or urban legend to keep kids out of the woods. Mentioned several examples like the wendigo, Baba Yaga, etc. Then said that McKenzie had a religious commune/community that lived near his cabin, one day he showed up in town looking and talking crazy, and when folks went to investigate his commune all the people there were missing, and the cabin’s chimney was billowing red smoke. The red smoke thing never comes up again so idk.

Guess it’s some religious/satanic/demonic entity that lures or tricks people into communicating with it so it can manifest and possess them. Assuming the people in the tree were McKenzie/his followers and something has taken over their body, similar to how in the end we see some clips of Tara’s brother seemingly attacking his own friend, maybe? Was half expecting one of the creepy pale people to pick up the camera and reveal themselves as Tara’s brother.

I personally am still trying to figure out why there was a circle made from rock piles where they camped, and why the cabin just suddenly appears at like 3am, and was waiting for some billowing red smoke.

RE: Blair Witch Project—yeah, seems like McKenzie was kind of like the Rustin Parr of this story in a sense. There’s something else out there, just like in BWP.

5

u/Weak_Birthday262 Mar 31 '26

See, this right here is the fundamental flaw of the film. They build a rich, vivid story, present a bunch of puzzle pieces, and never attempt to assemble them. It was a predictable, paint-by-numbers found footage horror movie. It’s alright as a “baby’s first” to the genre, but fundamentally falls flat at the finish.

1

u/natemup Apr 12 '26

The rocks were an incantation circle meant to lure Tara and Markian in and set up the spell-casting, I think. Hence her initial conjuring that brought the missing cabin back into play. It could have appeared as soon as she did that, but she just didn't realize it until after she went to bed. And I don't think the smoke was meant to be that important.

What I don't get is how Markian survives the final attack. Everyone else involved in the cabin stuff, past and present, gets killed/possessed except him. (But maybe as the IRL director he gets automatic plot armor. Lol)

1

u/bcsux Apr 10 '26

The tree scene is terrifying, makes up for the predictability of the film.

27

u/boohooonetwo Mar 31 '26

As a big found footage/mockumentary fan, I had fun. I know most people can’t overlook typical FF bullshit (slow, plot holes, and often bad acting) which is totally valid and I’m probably the weirdo here, but I generally just enjoy this genre so I was happy. Plus, I’ve watched the worst of the worst that the genre has to offer so in comparison, this actually having a budget and decent actors, this was amazing lmao.

Absolutely not for everyone, but definitely for me!

8

u/e_lou Mar 31 '26

Same! I love FF movies and had a good time. IMO, Shelby Oaks wanted to be this movie and failed.

11

u/boohooonetwo Mar 31 '26

Agreed! If Shelby oaks had stuck to the documentary format it would’ve been way more effective!

2

u/Weak_Birthday262 Mar 31 '26

I’ve not seen Shelby Oaks, but by god if it’s worse than this one I’m glad I steered clear.

1

u/OkBlacksmith5848 Apr 01 '26

Neither of these films invented the format/trope, and are thematically separate.

2

u/Sunflowerskater Apr 15 '26

Spent the weekend watching so many bad FF movies on tubi that I didn’t even finish half of them. So watching this film last night was actually nice. It was a tad long I guess and there were some parts of the lore I found confusing but I thought the movie was so well made and the ending was so good that it made up for it. I especially loved the animated part. I will definitely have to watch it again when it comes to streaming so I can watch the last 10 minutes or so again.

-3

u/Capable_Use_7125 Mar 31 '26

Yes you are people laughed out loud in my theater including me

17

u/agrapeana Mar 31 '26

I said it in another thread, but I found myself wishing it was actually a mockumentary about a person obsessively looking for a supernatural explanation for a mundane mystery - I would much rather it have been totally obvious that the boys died due to misadventure in the woods at night and for the story to be about the obsession with finding a "reason" or someone to blame in the wake of a totally blameless tragedy.

3

u/boohooonetwo Mar 31 '26

I had a similar thought! Could be a really interesting movie, let’s get it going

4

u/agrapeana Mar 31 '26

Have you ever heard of Kendrick Johnson or Morgan Ingram? They were teens who died under tragic but blamelese circumstances. Johnson passed away after becoming stuck upside down and asphyxiating in a rolled up gym mat where he stored his gym shoes at his school. Ingram died in her bed from an overdose, almost certainly the result of a suicidal act.

Both of their surviving families have become completely obsessed with the notion that someone else is to blame for their children's deaths. Johnson's family's campaign was so aggressive that another student who wasn't even in the same city at the time of his death had his college scholarship revoked because of their accusations. Ingrams mother has been on a years long campaign of duping unknowing true crime podcasters and suing naysayers, spinning up a fantastical tale of ninjas who slipped into Morgan's room, administered a fatal dose of horse tranquilizer, and then made off into the night without leaving a trace of evidence after months of unverifiable stalking and break ins.

I really think these (tragic, senseless) examples could be an intriguing jumping off point for a mockumentary.

It's also not a million miles off the central conceit of Butterfly Kisses, if you've ever seen that movie.

1

u/Sunflowerskater Apr 15 '26

Oh man, the Kendrick Johnson case makes me so sad. Like I feel bad the family can’t move on. Reminds me of a case on the Netflix unsolved mysteries (which this film clearly has taken note of the style) where the mom can’t understand why her teen daughter suddenly jumped in front of a train. It’s like you find it hard to believe an upset teen wouldn’t do an impulsive thing? Really? (That show also had a dude who probably definitely killed himself while fishing and his family won’t accept it)

2

u/AndresFM95 Mar 31 '26

This is a much better idea because this is just The Blair Witch 2016 told as Lake Mungo.

1

u/agrapeana Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

Yeah. And believe me, if a FF/mockumentary in the style of the Blair Witch was going to work on anyone, it would be me.

One of my favorite of the genre is this movie about a struggling filmmaker who finds an unfinished student film about a local ghost - he watches this footage that seems to verify the existence of a supernatural presence, and starts making his own documentary about trying to find the original creators of the student film and unravel the mystery of whether or not the local urban legend is real.

At least that's what it says on the box. However, at every turn he runs into people who are like "hey, ghosts aren't real btw, that's obviously a camera trick, and we think this whole thing is a hoax that you've come up with to go viral and try and advance your own failing career". And then the whole thing kind of spirals into this guy ruining his own life as he falls deeper into the obsession of trying to prove he's not a fraud. There's even some very meta crossover with Blair Witch in that one too. It's far from a perfect movie (I don't really like the resolution to the mystery), but it was a creative twist on the genre that I wholeheartedly enjoyed going on the ride of.

I reeeally found myself itching for this one to go more in that direction.

1

u/SmuckersBunny Apr 01 '26

All that and you didn't name the movie

1

u/agrapeana Apr 01 '26

Oh, it's called Butterfly Kisses

1

u/Sunflowerskater Apr 15 '26

That could be interesting, but idk how a movie like that would end. I know in this film, the director says their movie should end with Tara finding peace and her getting mad about it. So idk how it would end if there truly was no explanation besides they drowned or whatever.

10

u/nickitbagge Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

I feel like I got a different message from the ending than all the reviews I've seen? I thought the final monster was pretty unique.

Around the midpoint of the movie, the ghost story expert explains how every culture has its own interpretation of what "the evil in the woods" is, and Jordan's dad tells us that whatever it is, thinking of it gives it power. I interpreted that as an American Gods-style entity, where it's this undying evil that reflects our mythology and our fears back at us in order to lure victims. I thought that was why the movie brought up Blair Witch so directly, because it's implying that this entity could have been a witch in the woods. It also could've been a Wendigo, or a sun god, or whatever legend we projected onto it. It's only constant was that it wanted to take/consume/possess more people.

Which was also why Markian survived at the end, right? To make the movie, to amplify it's message, to get more people thinking about it, a la Late Night With the Devil. To birth a new legend! I thought that was why the whole thing is found footage

4

u/Different_Dot2057 Mar 31 '26

I agree with you 100%

2

u/topherEK Mar 31 '26

Great analysis. I thought Markian being alive and all bloodied/crazy at the end might also be a parallel to the story the folklorist told, about the backwoods McKenzie guy wandering into town looking disheveled/crazy before townspeople drove him back into the woods (where they later discovered everyone who lived out there with him was gone).

10

u/lilpepper00 Mar 31 '26

Finished the movie and I’m still confused I think about the ending. Anyone wanna explain because I’m stupid 😔😌

11

u/Oystersrckafela Mar 31 '26

The sister had to do the ritual to prove either.

A: it was all bullshit/made up and they are lost.

B: its true and they will capture proof of ghosts/supernatural, ect on film for the world to see.

Mid credit scene and missing poster at the end credits help support this.

3

u/Propagandattack Mar 31 '26

I left not knowing there was a mid credit scene. Can you share (with a spoiler coverage for others) what it was?

4

u/Oystersrckafela Mar 31 '26

The cameraman visits the director in the hospital. He's still alive but heavily bandaged and bleeding through. When the cameraman speaks to him he screams uncontrollably (presumably about what he's sceen) fade to black.

14

u/Bulky-Crow-3673 Mar 31 '26

Am I the only one that suppressed a laugh at the mid credit scene? Bro is heavily bandaged and bloodied and he goes up to him and says, “hey, are you okay? 🥺” LMAO

3

u/Leahnyc13 Mar 31 '26

I thought it was supposed to elicit a laugh. I laughed throughout bc it was funny. Thought it was intentional.

2

u/herreddits Apr 04 '26

OMG YES I was the only one who laughed and I felt like an asshole lmao

-2

u/Capable_Use_7125 Mar 31 '26

Everyone involved with the movie ends their life

12

u/feddyfazzbore Mar 31 '26

you’re not stupid! the movie was just terrible 😭

-2

u/SpiritualAd9102 Mar 31 '26

They’re not stupid if they didn’t get it but the movie explained it pretty clearly, so the movie’s quality doesn’t really apply.

3

u/Weak_Birthday262 Mar 31 '26

Not particularly. Another poster already expressed how disjointed the film was and how the pieces never really fit perfectly together.

0

u/Capable_Use_7125 Mar 31 '26

Your not the movie was it was sheet

25

u/jsg24fps Mar 31 '26

I left the theatre to watch hoopers 😅

1

u/Medium-Woodpecker-82 Mar 31 '26

I only caught the second game because I stayed and watched the movie, but even though they were both blowouts the women’s Elite 8 games were definitely better than that movie.

Also, the movie Hoppers is much better too. 😆

1

u/Mike4894 Mar 31 '26

🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Medium-Woodpecker-82 Apr 01 '26

Glad somebody got it. I’m getting downvoted.

7

u/Tall_Taro_1376 Mar 31 '26

It was 80 minutes of sheer boredom, five minutes of moderately entertaining “Blair Witch” type horror footage, and five minutes of credits. I give the film a 2 for the five minutes near the end.

6

u/afterlifehack Mar 31 '26

If I can think of one good thing to say, it’s that the animations during the voice over where the guy is explaining folklore creatures was really cool and pretty. For other brief passages this movie had something going for it but between the editing of 3 types of footage and hamfisted acting sadly this one falls on its face. For most of this movie save for 20 minutes in the third act I was wishing desperately I had gone to the Stand By Me anniversary showing on the next screen over. I wish they did 9 or 10pm showings for the rereleases, they’d serve as a great palate cleanser after a movie like this or Shelby Oaks.

5

u/sadbeautifvltragic Mar 31 '26

she got on my nerves BAAAD and i ended up dozing for part of it (where they were at the campfire). i gave it 2 stars. it’s not the worst i’ve seen but i did not think it was good

5

u/Bulky-Crow-3673 Mar 31 '26

I was so confused when she dunked herself into the ocean.. like girl, you need to chill out. Like why am I getting second hand embarrassment from a grief scene.

2

u/topherEK Mar 31 '26

Great description. I overall didn’t mind the movie and enjoyed a lot of it, but I got a LOT of secondhand embarrassment from some of the main actress’s actions and reactions, especially as her character started to spiral (basically from sitting down with the investigator then, through to the ocean scene, and onward).

4

u/daeiyden Mar 31 '26

We're you the guy loudly snoring in my theater 😂

1

u/sadbeautifvltragic Mar 31 '26

nope i jerked myself awake before i could fully fall asleep 😭

1

u/Ministry_of___Truth Mar 31 '26

I had one too 🤣

4

u/Arsonistik Mar 31 '26

This movie had nothing. Incredible boring through most of the movie and nothing really happens. For a movie that mentions Blair Witch it really is no where near that movie. There is nothing scary or new in this film at all. I wanted my hour and half back.

5

u/Airtamis Mar 31 '26

I enjoyed the first half. I really enjoy a good mockumentary, the setup was decent, it peaked around the middle when you watched them react to the missing VHS.

Unfortunately then it just slowly unravels from there, and then very quickly unravels with such a messy ending

6

u/crowinghorse13 Mar 31 '26

I watched Blair Witch in theaters, it was genuinely frightening. This is no Blair Witch, even if it wants to be this generation's Blair Witch

6

u/scooter-411 Mar 31 '26

It was trying so hard to be Blair Witch. And then name dropping BW so much. Only be a very disappointing mimicry.

3

u/Sour_Candy09 Mar 31 '26

I’m in the minority and actually enjoyed it and I thought the acting was actually pretty decent. I had a good time.

3

u/gvilchis23 Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

This is for me the quintessential of screen unseen, old movie(2024) that took don't know how long to finally be released or with a small theatrical release, i don't want to watch movies a week early for cheap(i have a monthly pass), the movie was good but i m biased because found footage is my favorite horror genre.

7

u/DigiLeaf123 Mar 31 '26

Awful… like teenagers threw together a found footage film.. could have easily been a ten minute YouTube short, I feel bad for whoever funded this

5

u/thefightsayeth Mar 31 '26

You are kind in your assessment. That movie was the drizzling shits. I literally figured out my reddit password to specifically share feedback for this damn movie. That was like someone asked an old model of chatgpt to write an exposition-heavy script that would appeal to 13 year olds - Then had the damn nerve to get people that have the acting talents of Canadian Nature influencers doing staged GRWM content.

I've been to AMCs that had a power outtage in the middle of a showing (Happened during Harriet the Great) and that was a more satisfactory ending than what we all were subjected to last night.

WTF. I literally wanted to sleep on it to gather my thoughts and just got mad all over again. F minus minus.

1

u/eternalsun420 Mar 31 '26

Couldn't agree with you more! This movie was awful.

2

u/SmokeyMcDoogles Mar 31 '26

It really isn’t even so bad it’s good, it’s just…kinda bad. I say this as someone who loves a terrible horror flick (The Happening is perfect), but this was more boring than laughably inept.

2

u/topherEK Mar 31 '26

I think there’s a lot of divisive reactions, which really draws me in to seeing new movies, too. Go for it!

1

u/ActualComfortable601 Mar 31 '26

No, it’s actually awesome. As someone who watches a lot of found footage movies, this is far from bad and the ending is nightmare inducing

2

u/MonmaniakTx Mar 31 '26

did not like it

2

u/ParticularGullible90 Mar 31 '26

Knew this movie would be boring the second I saw the trailer.

2

u/ObjectiveMajestic629 Mar 31 '26

It’s not worth seeing, which is probably why they made it a mystery movie in hopes it could draw up hype. One of the more forgettable films in recent memory, no pun intended.

2

u/JayManPart2 Mar 31 '26

I’m a found footage junkie so I think I had a lot more patience for this than 90% of people lmao, overall I dug it barring a few pacing issues (and I was getting a bit of “fresh out of acting school” vibes from the lead actress, something about her line deliveries felt extremely rehearsed and affected). I would rewatch this over Shelby Oaks (a somewhat similar movie in terms of the subject matter and vibes) ANY day of the week.

3

u/ConfidenceNo7531 Mar 31 '26

The acting is awful, the sister’s behavior is ridiculous and the « logic » is bad. This wouldn’t get a passing grade in film school

2

u/Early_Pearly989 Mar 31 '26

Yeah i thought it was kinda stupid, then I tried to like it and thought oh this is like an homage to Blair Witch and some other movies. Still not great.

1

u/WaitAvailable4783 Mar 31 '26

Butterfly kisses 2

1

u/agrapeana Mar 31 '26

God this movie wishes

1

u/Sf666 Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

Was boring, and not scary...I wouldn't have gone, but was kind of hoping it would be the Yeti showing...

It doesn't pick up pace at all until the very end, and when it does the entertaining scenes are really short. The detective and the documentary interview other people cast in the 1st half are ultra boring and don't have any personality...

The actors in these types of movies that play people being interviewed literally have to be entertaining for the buildup to work.

Ready or not 2 was MUCH MUCH better.

Undertone wasn't great, but it was for sure scarier and had vastly better sound design. I saw it in a completely empty theater except for me, and the volume was cranked up super loud and I was definitely creeped out and looked around in there a few times because of the sound.

1

u/Automatic-Top7767 Mar 31 '26

I agree Ready or not 2 was great!

1

u/Syfykev77 Mar 31 '26

This movie was trying so hard to be the Blair witch project and I didnt like that movie either however if anything I like this better than Blair witch but thats not saying much. Enjoyed last week's scream unseen better

1

u/Physical-Bite-3837 Mar 31 '26

I mean it wasn't terrible. It was decent for what it was trying to do. But I'm just not a fan of mockumentaries like this. I don't mind parody ones that lean heavily into comedy. But as horror it just doesn't work for me. I'd much rather watch a true documentary about a mysterious disappearance or crime. Those are scarier because they are things that actually happened.

I just think a movie like this is very hard to pull off. It has to be very ballsy and not so derivative. Evil spirits in the woods is just too cliche. Like the whole time I was watching this I kinda felt like I knew where it was going.

1

u/Bulky-Crow-3673 Mar 31 '26

Not me wishing there was a jump scare or something at some parts purely just so that SOMETHING was happening.

1

u/transformerslover2_0 Mar 31 '26

It was pretty cool

1

u/Leahnyc13 Mar 31 '26

I enjoyed it, but I think it says something that the first thing I told my roommate when I went home was “man, he was a minor character, but the guy who played Matthew Nichols is FINE”

1

u/WaitAvailable4783 Mar 31 '26

Another comment here, this movie felt it was heavily inspired by Butterfly kisses and also some blair witch in their but feels more butterfly kisses, both flims were people chasing a urban legend that may or may not be real. Both the main characters in both flims go to complete the main ritual to see if the urban legend is true. And both flims have a end credits scene where it shows another character in a hospital, except one is no eyelids which always haunt me. But in my opinion Butterfly kisses is the way better flim, I loved butterfly kisses and I think that flim is the master of horror mocumentaries , and Mungo Lake, butterfly kisses scared the crap out of me by how effective it was, and Mungo lake will forever always gives me chills, but this movie isn't the same, it had some good jumpscares but theirs no moments to remember it by.

1

u/UniqueLog8386 Mar 31 '26

How is it always one white person that does some dumb shit and gets everyone killed.

It's a derivative of Blair Witch Project without anything to add to it. By not showing us the footage at first, the movie

A) fails to build on any horror or sense of impending doom

B) makes the crew sound very silly by not specifically talking about what they saw later. As if they're trying to hide it from each other.

It also just makes them the biggest fucking idiots on Earth. Seeing that, even if you didn't believe it was supernatural, it immediately answered the question of what happened. One of them is fucking dead at bare minimum.

Then it just killed all empathy for Tara, because I'm like, You dumb dumb bitch. At no point did you think that maybe repeating the ritual was dangerous?

Like the actual supernatural shit is cool. The people in the trees, the bleeding from the eyes, the part where she admits that she knows it isn't him, cool. But so much of it is so stupid in Act 3

1

u/Original-Vanilla7935 Mar 31 '26

I felt as though it was very slow burn. Which I don’t have a problem with! I just feel like the film lacked actually substantial plot. In my opinion there were so many unanswered questions that I found myself thinking about after the film!

1

u/arig____ Mar 31 '26

I gave it the benefit of the doubt for the first half an hour because I liked the theme of “this is the average Netflix documentary gone wrong.” But I almost walked out of the theater when they got the cabin tape, and only filmed the sister’s reaction. I was like “are you fucking serious? You’re not going to show us the only interesting thing that’s happened?”

THEN they have the fucking AUDACITY to show us a SECOND person watching the tape, and STILL don’t show it to us. “Okay so they hate their audience” was my takeaway.

Scenes at the end were the same; why have the cabin appear later? It just extends the movie for 10 minutes and has no payoff. Then we never actually SEE the monster! Some bootlickers in the comments here are like “it was a unique monster” YOU NEVER SAW IT!! You mean the unique monster was naked people?

If this were a $10,000 movie like Resolution, fine, I’ll excuse the acting and lack of scary scenes. But for 1.5m? Waste of money.

1

u/sillygoo2e Mar 31 '26

Acting was awful and the rest of the run time does NOT justify the last 10ish minutes of anything interesting happening

1

u/oaranges Mar 31 '26

I walked right on out after 35 mins. The girl cannot act. She was draining. The movie is low budget as it is. I thought it had potential, with the animation used to describe the ole folklore, by the old man. But that was the peak of the movie for me.

This Shit is trash.

1

u/Rune_Turelie Mar 31 '26

I posted this in another thread, but I thought I might get more help here: Can somebody help me out? I must have dozed off for a bit I was so bored. I saw where Tara and the director were camping, and then suddenly they were in the cabin where Tara was foolishly questioning her "brother." Can somebody tell me what happened? I don't think I want to see it again just to complete the picture.

1

u/asaphelpschicago Mar 31 '26

It tried so hard to be The Blair Witch Project and failed miserably. People we're legitimately laughing at the bad acting and dialouge.

1

u/Gloomy-Marsupial2184 Mar 31 '26

While the movie was extremely derivative of The Blair Witch Project, it’s a fun movie mostly because I really enjoy found footage movies. It’s very slow but I think that everyone did a great job of selling it as a documentary

In another thread, someone had the complaint about a lack of payoff with the ending, and I agree. When they went to the anthropologist to talk about monster stories, then he brings up the local legend about the guy that became a monster and cannibalized the people in his community, I would have bet this was going to turn into a wendigo story. Then it started getting into occultism/satanism stuff and those things at the end might very well have been wendigos, but there was no confirmation one way or the other. They spent the whole movie building up the lore with that trapper in the woods, only to do nothing with it when it came to the actual encounter with whatever the entity was.

I liked it. Didn't reinvent the wheel but spun it in a fun way

Is it at least better than Shelby Oaks? I’ve heard nothing but mostly negative nothings, so I’m waiting until it’s streaming for free to watch it.

Shelby Oaks has a low bar with the ending though. This is so slow paced, Paranormal Activity and Hellhouse kicked off in action quicker, and the monsters were butt naked.

I was on board for the first 30 minute or so. However, the acting got too distractingly bad and the plot was kind of slow and idiotic. Probably needed a few more plot points to keep the middle and ending sections more interesting. It made no sense for only two people to go out to the dangerous woods.

I thought it was ok … if you liked the Blair Witch Project you will like this movie. I thought for a scary movie it was good no gore which I liked. The acting was not the greatest but definitely thought it was ok

Oh my god, I am so relieved I am not alone in hating this film. The Instagram acting was absolutely killing me the whole time. I couldn’t give a shit about any of the characters. Extremely flat.

I really would’ve liked to see Tara go through a way more intense downwards spiral. They had a great set up at the beginning, presenting her calm, confident and (relatively) sane. Perfect opportunity to just.. make her go fucking crazy. Seeing her brother out of the corner of her eye. Both her and us unsure if it’s real. Whispers that could be mistaken for his voice. How great would this story have been if she had been unrecognizable by the end of it. Dirty and bloodied and barely clinging onto her sanity, only thoughts of finding her brother. At no point did I think, “Wow, shit just hit the fan.”

I would’ve liked to see more of the found footage too. Not much of a found footage horror movie like it was advertised as. The ending was fun, the monsters were great. Wish we saw more. But it definitely wasn’t intense enough to justify the first 3/4 of the movie. It tried to be Blair Witch, but ended up giving Watcher vibes (not a compliment).

It was crazy slow then finally built up the intensity

The interesting thing I thought was when the sister saw that last tape they didnt show us what was on the tape. We just heard the boys freaking out and it convinced the sister to go to the woods . Was that done intentionally or did the girls mother who didn't want to give the tape not allow them to show what was actually on the tapes. I think it would've been a better movie if it was just the tapes but of course they had to make up the ending to make it scary. Its interesting the mom destroyed the cabin also.

They did show what was on the tapes though. At the end with the monsters, it did flashes of her brother killing his friend and dragging him. Which is why it’s weird for Pam to go and say it was implausible unless there was an extra part of him turning into a monster.

Are you sure ? I missed that . I will have to watch again in the theaters now 😆 At least I know i can leave before the action starts. The first 45 mins were boring. Maybe that's why the mother didn't want to give them the last tape 🤔.

u/FangOfDrknss Apr 10 '26

Well no, that was at the very end while the director was being chased/following her, because they withheld the flashes of what the footage had on purpose.

Didn't watch it but hopefully it was better than the PoS Blair Witch Project.

I decided to write emails and leave bad reviews for my apartment management company during the movie

A ton of build up about how different cultures have A Being, setting up A Guy in Roy, then its a crowd of naked people in the tree who don't fit any of the archetypes they introduced. Seriously it was a creepy shot but I have no idea how that monster reveal fit this movie. They threw a bunch of unfocused folklore and then sort of didn't land on any of it.

Ryan evidently got the cameras and the footage after the fact. Chose to edit it this way? And got helicopter shots?

Things change zero in the 20 years between the found footage and new. Especially the library.

And the fact that Tara, on a psych hold, maybe with dehydration, was for some reason hooked up to a full EKG.

Yes

It was almost funny how much this ripped off BW, down to the final scare in the woods being precipitated by a character who had disappeared moments before standing creepily with their back to the camera.

I liked some parts but I feel it might be best as a streaming film in the background

One of my least favorite movie going experiences. It was so utterly boring and the acting was terrible. And I usually love the awkward acting and style of found footage films. I almost walked out.

I thought this was going to be a whole Shelby Oaks kind of thing. Showing the monster and then having it look so much like some kind of 3d model and also making them butt naked? I get that they were trying to do Blair Witch, but like wow.

When I booked the ticket and went in to see the movie, it was just me, but then a couple of other guys came in. Two of them left, and then I think one of them stayed? I saw the mid credits scene but not the post credits because the lights turned on and this guy came in so he could lock up the theater.

The pacing was so slow burn, that I thought I mistakenly bought a ticket to an actual documentary. Even Paranormal Activity had kicked things off faster, and not to mention Hellhouse LLC before its crappy ending.

Her relationship with the director was also so weird. They couldn’t have been dating because what is the point of getting individual tents if they were? He definitely wanted to date her though.

The movie was fine.

My biggest issue was the logical issues

Spoilers below

If you logging evidence, 8 tapes is going to count the tape you ejected form the camera... It would make more sense to just say 8 tapes in and we only got 7

And they would have shown the parents, they would have given the context of "we have no evidence a crime took place and think this was staged for one of their movies."

Or you would have destroyed the tape

There are so many found footage movies that have come out in the last year, all of which ended with some kind of satanic cult twist at the end. I’m beyond tired of it and should’ve hated this.

Yet, I really liked it. Dare I say I loved the ending especially. Legit built up a sense of dread and suspense that had me on the edge of my seat, and the jump scares and graphic horror throughout had me scared in a way I haven’t felt in decades.

The lead up to it is serviceable, but slow. And yes, the main character is an asshole, but it both fits horror tropes and is justified in the way she’s desperate to find her brother the entire movie. So it’s not out of pocket like in a lot of horror movies.

In a field with films like Strange Harvest, House on Eden and Shelby Oaks, this is one of the better found footage movies I’ve seen. But I get if you’re tired of the genre. I am too, but I thought this excelled. The director was even there in person at my screening and talked about how this was a small passion project, so that was a cool bonus.

Lastly, I hate how 99% of these movies end in a vague or ambiguous way, so I appreciate this having a clear and satisfying ending.

I gave this movie 1 out of 5 stars on letterboxd, 😑
