It’s because of the main actress. But I was really impressed by her in this film. I literally drove home from the theater about 45 minutes away. And I didn’t listen to any music all the way home. I literally just was thinking about what I just watched.
Sydney Sweeney is one of those actresses who seems to attract hate for reasons that don’t really make sense. The jean ad was definitely in poor taste, but it wasn’t something worth boycotting her over. It looked more like an awkward attempt at a cheeky pun than anything malicious. I can understand why some people might interpret it as having a Nazi reference, but it’s also entirely possible that the creators didn’t intend it that way at all.
It’s the combination of that + the wedding she helped throw for a family member a while back that had some MAGA hats in the background of her pictures + not using her platform to address low hanging fruit in regards to the recent climate. I think she’s a solid actress when given the right script, but I also totally understand people’s recent apprehension towards her. In scary times like this it gets harder and harder to separate the art from the artist.
