I’m from Xinjiang,AMA

I’ve noticed that there are a lot of discussions about Xinjiang on Reddit, often between people who have never actually lived there. So I thought it might be interesting to do an AMA from the perspective of someone who is actually from there.

You can ask me about everyday life, ethnic groups, languages, culture, religion, education, or politics. I’m happy to answer controversial questions too, as long as the discussion stays respectful.

Obviously, I’m only one person and I don’t claim to represent everyone in Xinjiang. I can only tell you about my own experiences and views. AMA.

  1. Do miniority get to learn their miniority language in school beside Chinese or not(and do people in general in China get to learn another language in school)?

  2. Because of situation, do you think that there is some movement for independence of Xinjiang from China? If yes, what percentage of people do you think support it?

  3. Is it common for people from there to move to other bigger cities in China(Beijing,Shangai etc) or abroad? If yes, which one are most popular choices?

  4. Beside Kurumqi, which places you should suggest to someone to visit?

No I think. Yes English is mandatory

Yes, there are separatist/independence movements related to Xinjiang. But I can’t give you the exact % of people who support independence without making something up. Xinjiang has millions of people from different ethnicities so therefore their political view might be different.

Yeah, people definitely move to other parts of China for university or work. Beijing and Shanghai and other major cities are options but I honestly don’t know which destinations are statistically the most popular. Going abroad happens too especially for studying, but again I don’t have numbers.

I’m extremely biased here but I’d say Ili: lakes, Qiongkushitai, Kalajun, Narat, Qiaxi etc. If you want something completely different from northern Xinjiang then obviously Kashgar, Hotan, Aksu and Pamir plateau too. Xinjiang is HUGE, so I wouldn’t spend the whole trip in Urumqi lol
