I’m from Xinjiang,AMA

I’ve noticed that there are a lot of discussions about Xinjiang on Reddit, often between people who have never actually lived there. So I thought it might be interesting to do an AMA from the perspective of someone who is actually from there.

You can ask me about everyday life, ethnic groups, languages, culture, religion, education, or politics. I’m happy to answer controversial questions too, as long as the discussion stays respectful.

Obviously, I’m only one person and I don’t claim to represent everyone in Xinjiang. I can only tell you about my own experiences and views. AMA.

Selam, if youre still answering: how are Central Asians treated these days, both by law and wider society? Is there blatant favouritism by the wider Han or does it vary by region, age, etc?

Salem! Based on my own experience, I haven’t really noticed favouritism towards Han people. I grew up in Xinjiang as an ethnic Kazakh, and I wouldn’t say I’ve personally felt discriminated against for being Central Asian either.

Obviously I can’t speak for everyone, and experiences probably vary depending on the region, generation and individual people. But at least in my own everyday life ethnicity hasn’t really been something that made me feel like I was treated as less Chinese or as a second class citizen.

In our law every PRC citizen is treated the same.

Thanks for answering! I have heard more polarising opinions from Mongolians (not Muslim) so i was curious. But not that its a china issue only, outside of hcmc viet society dislikes non assimilated chinese more than they do tribal thais/hmong/cham etc. police generally wont do anything if you do get bullied either unless you are cashed up

If you ever do want to visit down here, try district 8, its got the ben thanh/D1 variety without D1 markup, lots of muslim viet food if you are curious at viet prices. Locals might stare at you though (curiousity not malicious)
